Just in the interest of being precise, I believe there are as many as two dozen arsonists involved. The rest of the people arrested were for negligence (throwing a cigarette on the ground, refusing to comply with burn bans, etc). Still boggles the mind how more than 20 people could intentionally start fires. Extremely foolish.

The forests will recover and grow back... in 60 to 70 years. Some of the animal populations devastated will also recover. But many will be gone forever.

Better forest management would have saved a lot of both by keeping fires from spreading or reducing their fuel and thus their intensity, and increased firefighter staff and resources would have done a better job putting these out. I hope Australia does both once this crisis is over.

I'm old enough to remember the fires in Yellowstone and how the environmentalists told us to just let them burn, it was more natural. Yellowstone still hasn't recovered from that idiotic mistake, but it is getting there. Good forest management that clears brush, creates fire barriers, and the like helps ensure the fires that do occur (we cannot stop all of them, but we should be doing better on that score too) will be limited and it provides animals safe havens. From what I've read the Australian bureaucracy in charge of this stuff was actually fining people for creating fire barriers on their property! Idiocy!

That and apparently there's been 20 people arrested for actually starting fires down there. It blows my mind. If we could repopulate the species devastated by these fires with TF, we should start with them.
