While that doesn't justify any attempts at stealing your characters, it does explain why people would feel emboldened to do so.

There’s no excuse to steal or use someone’s character. Even if they leave, that character is still their property.

Well my train of thought is that if you essentially abandon a character then, eventually it could be argued that others should be able to claim it or use them. I base this on the fact that copyright law doesn't allow you to copyright an idea, do nothing with it, and just keep the idea to profit off of others people's work. While some companies do that, they actually don't have a legal leg to stand on and would likely lose the rights they'd paid for (without getting a refund) and the person they were suing would more than likely walk away without issue. (Just to note, I'm not a lawyer, but I've watched a few documentary type things about it)

But as I said in my reply to Cobalt, the fact they were financially profiting from the characters to me is a step too far regardless of Cobalt abandoning the character or not, as I'm a firm believer that when you want to get money involved, you should always check with the original owner and if possible offer to buy the rights of the thing out right from them first.
