I guess the big question of this, is whether or not Facebook/Youtube/Twitter, et. all, are really outlets that people can use for Free Speech and shouldn't be censored (within reason and application of laws/policies), or are they private corporations that can do what they want. (Despite everything they claim - they're still private corporations)
Now, when you start bringing up "news channels" - Fox, CNN, NBC, et al, they're really NOT news channels - they're opinion channels. 90% of the programming is opinion, and the rest is news. The headache is listening to the questions these talking bobble-heads ask, the answers received, and add things up. Too often I listen to one line of questioning, only to ask, "What about this (insert detail here) that you didn't even bring up?"

If these companies have contracts with the Government! If they are contracted then they have obligation to stand by Freedom of Speech and expression!
Otherwise, why wouldn't I believe the government is using them as tools of suppression?

I feel, although they may be corporations, they've made themselves a public outlet just like newspapers & the news media, especially since they get paid by advertisers, to advertise their wares to those same users, because it's an open forum. Therefore, their user's/constituent's posts fall under the 1st Amendment protection, unless the post is unlawful, like yelling "Fire!!" in a crowded theater when there's no fire just to incite a panic, or the post promotes violence & hate towards others.

To find out who rules over you,simply find out who you're not allowed to criticize. Lots of people are criticizing China and WHO. But who has laws protecting them from simply pointing out 44% of them are in the top 1%?

This is why, if I were to upload videos on YouTube, I'd rather have them NOT monetized.

I think freedom of speech is important, but folks seem to have different ideas of what it even means these days. The fact that both foreign and domestic organizations are using social media to spread propaganda complicates things. Maybe trying to stopper up the flow of misinformation is noble, but go too far and you risk advancing the tyranny you're trying to reign in. And with false information coming from all major news media, The White House, and foreign nations...well, it's easy to overreach.

Regarding China, I don't actually think they've been malicious here...just incompetent. We've known for years that information there is tightly controlled...why wouldn't their authoritarian leadership want to deflect bad press from their country? It's standard operating procedure for authoritarian dictatorships by now. Something bad happens, you obfuscate, deny, and blame someone else. They had this virus breakout, the tightly controlled government cracked down on their own people to try to keep it quiet and then when the WHO came along they obfuscated while it spread.

I suppose if anything, this whole disaster is an argument for why freedom of speech is important. If China didn't have such a stranglehold over their own internal information doctors there might have been able to work more closely with the WHO and....idk; if not avert disaster then at least inform the world it was coming? It's a mess.
