Controller Woes. I'm cursed.

General
I'm kinda reaching my wits end with controllers. I've been trying a ton of different controllers and somehow SOMETHING breaks on every one of them.
I used to stick to the basic logitek ones, they are cheap, and last about as long as I'd generally expect with them, the buttons or depad eventually take a shit because the rubber bit on the inside starts to rip. So, I figured instead of going through a bunch of those, I'd try gettin something better to last longer, but I apparently just can't win.
One of my desires for a controller is to have the dpad ABOVE the left stick. I wan't that left stick down in the middle next to the right stick. I use the middle part of my thumb to use the dpads and can't do that when it's down low.
I've searched and tried various controllers that seemed to have good reviews, BUT, something breaks on them within months. Everything from cheap to pricier controllers. I've had directions break, buttons start sticking, analog sticks break and not read correct inputs. It makes me think I've gotta somehow be doing it after going through this many controllers, but I honestly don't think I'm all that hard on them, I think I'm pretty gentle.
I though I've finally found a great controller with the 8BitDo "pro" controller. Felt great, had an some mechanical issues with it being too easy for down inputs on the dpad when pressing left or right, but whatever, I was adapting to that.
Y button starts to stick. Can't open it to investigate. TINY screws that require an allan key smaller than any of our sets have here.
Fuck me.
Granted, this is the most used button on the controller. It's used for my attack button in smash, attack button for SoR4 more recently. and attack 1 for my mugen stuff, but STILL this shouldn't be happening when I got the damn thing over the winter. I've had logiteks last longer. This is particularly shitty because I really liked this controller. The feel of it was one of the better ones I've had.
It's still useable, but the sticking makes me think the rubber inside it is already shitting out. So, rip.
The only controllers I've owned that lasted YEARS were Gamecube controllers. The last one I owned finally started having an issue with the stick and I haven't replaced it. I so prefer the square shaped button layout, and the Dpad's in the wrong spot and very small.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm tempted to get another 8BitDo pro and hope I just had bad luck, because I can use it with the Switch and the PC.
I feel cursed and also tempted to just say fuck it and just buy like 3 logiteks and just expect it to break in a few months and then gut each broken one for parts like I did in the past to keep them functional longer. I don't even play games all that often, just like an hour or two a day if I even play that day.
Do fight sticks last longer? I'm tempted to just say fuck it and train myself start playing PC games with a stick. I donno what to do, this is butt.

FA+

It has a selector on the backside of the controller which says 'PC'. Also, it does have a USB-C connector cable for the Controller. I got one myself and it is a LOT better than the standard P4 controller!!
Funnily enough, I actually like the feel of the dpad with my rigging more than the default. Hahah. but yeah, even that would eventually fail. Usually the down direction, because fighting games.
I am old; you described preferring the sticks being beneath the D-pad and I immediately thought of the N64 controller instead of the PS4 controller gripped in my non-typing hand.
N64 controllers were fucky.
Also, PS4 controller is solid and comfortable as hell and probably the best first party option for PC. I believe there are official drivers for it now compared to when I used to use mine, or I believe Steam has options. And all the silly clip-on accessories you can get like a keypad or cooling fans.
I'm not that aggressive with my controllers, the games I play just require a lot of rapid inputs. The only input-light game I play right now is The Binding of Isaac. Be tweek SoR4, Smash and Mugen, the 8BitDo I got saw a lot of action, but even still, way too soon. I had someone else tell me they don't last through fighting games, and recomended me on that should. So I'm gonna give that a whirl as well as get a 1st party PS controller as a backup. First party stuff I've had always lasts. It's the 3rd party stuff that I try that never seems to cut it, and it sucks, because I like the feel and layout of a lot of them.
