Last freebie for the month and CHALLENGE for YOU writers
5 years ago
This one is really special, I want to focus character, no background, just a try at focus.
Try something I'm not comfortable with, like the others freebies as a goal to improve.
But this time it will not be randomly picked.
Will be picked the little story who touch me the most about one outfit which your character wear.
Cause it can be a story behind.
Personal example, a shirt you preserve more than the others, cause it was a really important gift, but you don't want to let it on a drawer, at the mercy of the voracious insects who could infiltrate on the worse case ! Never wear it is neither an option cause it's something you force yourself to take sometimes to show that glance of light it brings to you.
The marks of the time on it but it is giving him important traits, and surely not going to trash as much as you can preserve it and you are not sure if it will ever go that way before you pass away.
You have 20 hours, if you want or are inspired by this. (May be extended, cause, well I feel it as quite important in some ways.)
Even If I'm not a good reader, or writer, and don't often open an unfriendly book with no images, I still care a lot about stories.
If you have a refsheet that's OK, if you don't, be sure to have a description of your character, but that's OK too.
You also can tell me what do you think of this kind of challenge ^^

Many years ago, Oroszlan visited some young cats who were in an unfortunate situation. It was a place where their basic needs were met ... but not much beyond that. They were kept under control. They were somewhat ignored by the adults who held them in their charge. These cubs were in a place not unlike an orphanage. They were taken from their parents at such an early age that they had no memory of them. It was a sad situation. Not merely sad but sinister. Today would create a bit of a stir in their otherwise normal routine.
As Oroszlan drew nearer to the holding area, he was instructed on how to approach the cubs. "Do not offer them any food or toys. Outside reading materials are not allowed ...", the agent continued " and weapons are strictly forbidden, so you must turn yours over at the security checkpoint. It will be returned to you upon your departure." He turned his head momentarily as he gave a nod to one of the security cameras. In that moment, Oroszlan seized the opportunity to surreptitiously roll his eyes. "Yeah, I got it." He unholstered his Kimber .45 and handed it to the head of security before making his way down breezeway and through the double doors of the entrance. Once inside, he followed his guide to another door equipped with an iris scanner. Oroszlan watched, mindfully taking in his surroundings as the agent lowered his head and lined his eyes up with the biometric device.
With a soft electronic whirr, the door smoothly slid open. Oroszlan was ushered through the threshold. Once through, security swiftly took his leave before the door closed and locked. There before him stood the ones he had come to meet. Four young lion cubs lounged quietly in the corner of an open air courtyard. Two young tigers froze in their tracks and eyed him with curiousity. The sight of a shaggy maned lion with a medium athletic build may have been intimidating to someone so young. "No wonder that they're nervous, you idiot." Oroszlan thought to himself. "You're a stanger with a holster on your hip." The pair wandered a little closer to him but then stopped just several feet away. He knelt down so as to look less intimidating.
"Who are you?" One of them asked.
"Just a friend who's concerned for your well being." Came the response.
"Oh yeah?" said the other. "I don't remember seeing you here ever before!"
"Are you their dad?" Quizzed the first cub as he pointed toward the little lions in the far corner under the shade.
"No! No I ... I'm not." Oroszlan squinted his blue eyes as he averted his gaze downward and shook his head slightly, a bit taken aback at the defensiveness of his answer to a perfectly reasonable question. "Look, I'm just here to make sure you're all safe. Would you mind introducing me to your friends over there?"
"Sure!"
"Let's go!"
He was slightly surprised at the swiftness of their response. They warmed up to him very quickly. It brought a whimsical half smile to his face as he stood and trailed behind one of them. The other skipped alongside of Oroszlan, at the same time reaching a paw out to try to direct him. In his boisterousness, he accidentally caught a claw in Oroszlan's trousers and ripped a small hole above his right rear pocket. He quickly ran ahead, apparently oblivious. It was of no consequence anyway. The two tigers playfully tumbled into the sheltered spot where the four lion cubs silently amused themselves with a couple of pop-up books and some construction blocks. They tried their best to keep to themselves ... to little avail. "Hey guys check it out! I think we found your dad!" In their excitement one of them instantly smashed through the block model. It blew into a few hundred colorful pieces of confetti. The sort that you'd loathe to stumble bare-pawed over in a darkened hallway.
"NO! I was almost finished making that!" The poor little white lion wore a look of utter discouragement. "I'm sorry kiddo. I asked them to introduce us. It's my fault." Oroszlan sat down and crossed his legs. The other three lion cubs went back to what they were doing as the tigers shot apologetic glances to everyone in the group.
"So what's your name?" A tawny cub asked.
"Oroszlan. You may call me Oro."
"Did you come to play with us?" came a sudden query from the other tawny cub as she put her book on the ground. A mischievous smirk flashed across her face as she suddenly pounced on his lower leg. "Whoa! Easy there!" The others took this as their cue to attack.
Everyone dog-piled onto him at a seemingly invisible go signal. "Yeow-ch! Can you little shits take it easy with the teeth?!" One of them had a mouthful of his shoulder while yet another tugged at his mane, giggling maniacally all the while.
"Grrrrrr!" Exclaimed a tiger as he tried to eat one of the paws of their mock prey.
"Yeah, you guys are vicious all right! Real tough. But we need to talk about something serious for a moment."
"Awwww! Can't we play tag?" Begged a lion.
"I wanna play hide and seek, Oro!" One of the tigers proclaimed.
Oroszlan gathered his thoughts as he peeled the cubs from his now tattered white V neck t-shirt. "Listen up everyone. I'd love to stay and play, but right now I have something I need you to do."
"Okay ... what?" One of them asked with an exasperated sigh.
"I'm coming back for all of you very soon, so I need you to please do exactly as I say ..." He laid out simple instructions. One task for each of them to carry out at a specific time when he returned in one week. He was confident they would be able to do it, and even more confident in his team's ability to fool security. After all ... this wasn't his first rescue mission.

Full disclosure, this short story was loosely based on my real life exploits in South Africa over a decade ago. During my time as a game ranger, I paid a visit to a friend's adult lions before having my clothing decimated by several play starved lion and tiger cubs. The shirt is long gone but I still have the ripped pants :D That indelible mark (now patched) is a reminder of days gone by. It was an experience I won't soon forget! Bittersweet though. I still sometimes wonder what became of the cubs.
I enjoyed your short story as well :)
Saying you have no story and go with something like this. That's interesting !

Ooh, I'm so stoked for this! I know you are busy, so it is very cool of you to take the time to do this. Love seeing how it progresses <3
I wrote up a little thing for one of my characters! It was a little on-the-spot, but I hope you enjoy!

This is Katheos of the Atheorian people. While the picture shows off her armor, what's really more important is her uniform.
The uniform isn't special...it's standard wear for most commanders in her army's military. But how she got it...and what it means to her, is very important.
In one of the settings I have for her, Katheos was never anything great; she grew up on the streets, in the middle of her people's capital city, right as it was going through a massive upheaval. Just before she was born, the island her people were stationed on had a agricultural collapse, leading to MASSIVE food shortages. With things falling apart, the military leaders overthrew the original government to take a more direct control during this suffering time.
With food running low, more drastic measures were enacted to help control the population, such as forced sterilization camps and major rationing cutbacks, which no doubt soon sparked tensions between the 'Emergency Government' and the Atheorian people it ruled over. Katheos was born into this on the streets...without anything to her name...and no family; abandoned. That was, until she was found by a local military leader and brought under his wing as his protégée (though he only did this to make her into a propaganda machine to help inspire morale and trust in the government.)
Soon, under their guidance, she joined the ranks of the military as a leader. She was put in co-command of an exhibition out in to the rest of the world to set up a colony, and to aid the dying homeland. From that, she gained her uniform; a symbol of her people's power and hope. With it...she is something, a champion, a leader, a symbol of hope; a light in the darkness. It gives her strength in the face of her rough past and purpose to her new life: to find a way to aid her dying people; a goal which brings her meaning beyond anything else
Can't wait to see what you do with them!
Finally had some time to start sketching !
