Hand problem! Halp?
Hello there! I have a small problem that started to become bigger and I thought maybe other artists know how to fix it...
I have a thing on my finger, the one I hold my pen on. It is like a bump, I have it for a pretty long time and I dont think I will be able to get rid of it due amount of time I draw. It stopped to grow several years ago and it just start to hurt if I draw too much, some rest helps so no probs I guess.
But recently another one appeared! >,< From another side of same finger in the place where it touches my tablet surface. And It hurts alot. And Im afraid it will get bigger.
I tried to google what might help but found nothing. I just use patches to be able to draw but it feels horrible.
Maybe someone here knows how to get rid of this? Maybe what doctor to visit? I think it might be called writers callus?
Thank you for your attention and sorry that I've asked this ^^'
PS. also I have an issue if I draw too much for a long time(6-8h a day or more for 3+ days in a row) my hand start to numb, espesually my thumb, so I cant hold a pen or move it. Have no idea what to do with this either D:

And I will try to make tablet pressure to be less, ty!
My advices:
- If when you touch it it's hotter when supposed to be, go yo the doctor, it's an inflammation.
- if it doesn't hurt when you don't move your hand, it will probably be a skin problem. If you're having any problems like eczema or similar, try your usual treatment. It's what helps me.
To avoid traumas when drawing:
- Avoid pressing on your hand, try using only brushes that you don't have to press too much (or change the pressure in parameters)
- Don't draw more than 6 hours a day. Do small pauses every 2 hours.
- Use the tool "rotation" instead of putting your hands in difficult positions.
- Try hot baths with salt for your hands, it will help you to get it relaxed.
It is not safe to get ibuprofen in the current situation. Because it can make things worse if you get Covid-19. Just google it.
I suppose I still should be more careful with ibuprofen then...Thank you!
But i will defenetly make less load for next week or two! Ty!!
It's normal.
I'm a physical therapist and osteopath from germany... so please bear with my bad english.
I have to agree with some of my previuos commentors ... it sounds mostly like a callus, due to too much pressure put on our finger...
Frankly there is not so much you can do about it... you should try gripping your pens lees hard, or perhaps use another grip.
Cooling should help with the pain. Diclophenac can help too, if it is sore... but don't overdo it...
Longterm solution would most likely be a softer grip or a changed grip...
Try supplement your diet with antiinflammatory nutritions... like thyme, sage, honey, curcuma etc. that can help keep the inflammation in check...
Also, like belovedbeast suggested try one of those squishy things to put on our pens...
Perhaps exercising finger extention ( opening your hand ) can help too, there are nice tools for that, which aren't too expensive...
In generell take frequent breaks, massage your palm and fingers during breaks, drink enough (high priority), don't stress yourself to much...
On the matter of your thumb numbing... does it numb on the side of your palm, or on the back of your hand? If on the side of your palm, this could perhaps be a minor case of CTS or CarpalTunnelSyndrom, which would be caused by your wrist being pressed on the drawingboard for too long, or you cramping (gripping your pencils too hard). That will compress N. medianus, which is in charge of the inside of your thumb, index- and middle finger...
That can be helped by stretching your wrist, doing exercises of nerv mobilisation after Buttler (the guy is named like that)... best let a Physical therapist show you how it's done (videos and pics don't work that good...)
If it's on the backside of your hand, that would be N. Radialis, and that would be a whole other can of worms... that would mean alot more trouble...
Got some honey and prepared thyme tea! Looking for a glove to soften the pressure.
My thumb numbs at the side where it joints the palm. Sometimes it feels horrible, for example when im trying to open a bottle sometimes i cant move it after a try. So it numbs when im trying to hold things thight. The only thing that has helped me in the past - to instantly stop drawing for a day or two - then all become better. But I hope to find a solution without abandning drawing cause I cant go without it xD
Ty again!
you're very welcome.
As I said, it sound like a minor case of CTS. Consult your Doctor, and consult as physical therapist or osteopath, they may help you with that. I'm pretty sure in your case, as it is minor, there is hope of curing it without surgery. Stretching, nerv mobilisation after David S. Butler <-- the guy intented that technique ... usually it works quiet good with those problems... you need to exercise Nervus medianus <-- that's the one which causes your problems.
Perhaps in the long run try to exercise the hand extensor muscles... there are nice tools for that on amazon for example... until then, try to be gentle to your hand... make frequent pauses, as the others suggested, it'll help shortterm...
Thankyou!
I mean might be a good idea for quick suggestions, but definitely see a doctor as soon as possible :D
It's important to your job after all! If you need your car to go to work everyday, it needs to be in good shape, but your body is even more important. Get better soon! :3
I cant go to a doctor atm cause of COVID ^^ So I just wish to find something that will help me before isolation ends.
Thank you!
Such nice comments, and useful advices you got here already. Well, I hope you got better.
I happen to be a doctor too, but I think
One more thought I had during reading this entire thread is that you might have developed arthritis in your finger joint. It's a sterile inflammation most commonly caused by overstressing a joint. Diclophenac penetrates into joints and cartilages best, among the non steroid anti inflamatory drugs (or NSAIDs for short), but as it was said before, try not to overdose it.
Should my theory be correct, a low dose steroid intake would also be able to help your situation. Even injected locally, depending on the state of your finger. To help you decide, if a dermatologist doesn't find anything, you should seek out a rheumatologist! They can sort these things out without you having to damage your system with unnecessary drugs.
Anyway, that's just another idea, should all the above fail. Hope you've gotten better, and wish you the best of luck! =^.^=
Hope this helps you, keep up the amazing animations.
