I always keep the old account followed. It hurts nothing, and on the occasions artists have gone back to the old name I've been able to avoid having to do any extra work. The only way I stop following is a) the account is deleted, b) the artist dies, c) the artist turns out to be a screaming douchenozzle. Odds are most of the ones still here are either like me or themselves inactive for one reason or another.
