Happy Independence Day and other Stuff
So, I hope every American had a happy Independence Day and everyone else had a great fourth of July. My daughter and I watched some fireworks in our neighborhood from our front yard. We don't usually see it together because I'm usually at Anthrocon. I really hope they would stop scheduling it on 4th of July weekend, but nobody listens to me.
While the United States hasn't always lived up to its founding principles, those founding principles, that all are created equal and should be free to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness... those are worth celebrating and honoring the sacrifices of all the men and women who came before us to make that possible. Flawed and imperfect men and women though they be, they still sought and worked to make the world better and extend the promise of equality more broadly than those before them. I'm grateful for what I've received and hope I can, in some small way, leave it better for my daughter.
The last couple of months have been okay for us. We've been getting out and riding our bikes a lot these last few weeks. Yesterday we began the day with a four hour and fifteen mile bike ride, stopping for breaks regularly, including a half-hour break for brunch. It was a good family outing. We were able to get out to eat at a restaurant a few weeks back, and we hit Living Treasures Animal Park as well. But that's it for outings; while many places are sorta open, we're being judicious there. Angie did have fun at one of her classmates birthday parties / pool parties the other week. It was her first time seeing her classmates face to face since March so she had a great time there. Her Karate and Gymnastics are open as well, which gives us hope maybe her school will be too in the Fall, but we'll see.
Our first vacation plans, something we had in the works since last Summer, might get kiboshed though. Our August plans still seem to be on track though as long as M. Corona doesn't resurge here in Western PA. So far so good. When we do go to the grocery store and other indoor places people are wearing masks and usually managing to social distance, so I'm hoping we'll be okay.
Speaking of masks, I now have an anthro Zebra mask from Redbubble. Woohoo!
And speaking of Woo-oo, been loving Disney+ and watching Duck Tales with my daughter. She watched the entire original Duck Tales and now we're watching the new one. I'm actually surprised how much I'm enjoying it; only a few episodes have made me cringe so far. Not keen on some of the changes, but for the most part it's good.
We also watched "The Legend of the Three Caballeros" which only has 13 episodes but it's freakishly hilarious and worth checking out. If you like Donald Duck you'll love it.
Anyway, I need to get back to cleaning out my message and picture backlog here. Everyone stay safe!

I'm also going to be moving to a bigger apartment at the end of the month, which I'm very excited about. Working from home has meant improvising a work space, and the new place will have room to actually set up a proper desk.
Watched The Fandom yesterday; it was an excellent documentary, and it really made me miss Anthrocon something fierce. But better safe than sorry; 2021 will be here before we know it.
Yeah, furry cons will come back at some point, but likely not until we have a vaccine.

Happy Independence Day! We'll take you back any time you like. ;-p

Anyway I'm thinking if I do get Disney+, Ducktales would be a reason why. I loved the original, but it was certainly dated. The new one just so impressed me with how they updated the concept with new touches to the story and references to the other shows, and how they built up Della and so on... I just love the new Ducktales. I hadn't had any plans to sign up for Disney +, but Ducktales might be the reason I do.
There's lots more on Disney+ that's worthwhile. I'm looking forward to watching many of the older Disney movies too; already did 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Black Hole. Plenty more good ones to go. But yeah, the new Duck Tales, at least the first 2 seasons, has been pretty solid with only a few episodes/moments that make me cringe. The references to the other shows is one of the things I really like about it, plus the great way they treat Donald Duck.

Clearly this version has more freedom to use his character and it's worked well.
But right now, if I were to get Disney+, DuckTales and the new Marvel shows would be the reasons why.
Also be sure to check out "Legend of the Three Caballeros" which is just hilarious and good fun. We started watching the Mandallorian too and that's quite good. Plus all of the older movies, definitely worth it.

I felt like Rogue One was an interesting idea but I didn't really feel the ending worked, not only did everyone die but it felt forced. Solo, A Star Wars Story wasn't really necessary, and the plot twists in the last movie were just WTF. I still don't know why they had to bring Palpatine into it out of nowhere with this secret fleet he was just keeping in his back pocket. Makes no sense and that's before you even consider the logistics.
I'm not surprised we got a Party Wipe in Rogue One, I thought it upped the drama of what they did, getting the Death Star plans. What they did was worth giving their lives for. I haven't seen Solo, but really, Greedo Never Shot. Han's a scoundrel rogue who got a redemption because he fell in with the right crowd. Never saw Episode IX and I suppose eventually I will see it just to see what they did, I'm not rushing to do so.

The new trilogy had too much Luke, Leia, Han, etc, for it's own good rather than establishing a brand new mythology within the universe with its own merits. Half of the new Star Wars movies we haven't even seen in the theatres, and there isn't one that I haven't had an issue with.
My issue with the new trilogy (have not seen IX as I said) is two fold. It is not that they had too much of Luke, Han, and Leia. (I got the impression there was a focus on each movie being a closer for one of the three in turn, so Han would be the focus on VII, Luke VIII, and Leia IX). My first issue is that these beloved characters seem to have regressed and become shadows of their former selves. Everything about them went off the rails and the greatness we saw them achieve was all thrown away. Han and Leia breaking up, Luke running away, Han going back to smuggling, etc... It felt like a huge letdown.
The second issue I had is with the new characters. Finn was fine and I liked his growth as a character; he's my favorite of the good guys. Kylo Ren was a really fun bad guy showing just how dangerous the emo teenager could be with all that power and bitter rage. Po Dameron could have been interesting but he never seemed to go anywhere. Rose started out okay, but just wasn't interesting and then when she knocked Finn out of the way I just wanted to smack her. And Rey... she was only ever okay but just didn't feel like a deep character to me, too much of a Mary Sue (although I do think she had weakness shown in her in VII at least so she wasn't a complete Mary Sue).
A third issue is that the plots felt derivative to me as you've noted. Nothing new, no expanding of the mythology, just rehashing old ideas and the risks they do take felt like betrayals to the original story and characters.

I feel that Poe just didn't really develop an identity. He was originally meant to die when he and Finn crashed which may be why his role in the latter 2.5 films feels inserted. He just never really took on an identity to me. Rose was useless in movie 3, if and when you see ROS, you'll note she is in a few scenes and has no plot relevance, able to be completely removed without impact. So her buildup in The Last Jedi is thrown away.
I think what they should have focused on was the struggles of a new government to establish their credibility and hunting down the rogue sith and empire forces still out there.
Poe dying there would have worked just fine, as there's no explanation for how he got out of there and got back to the Resistance in time to come in and save them elsewhere. Huh, how'd you do that? And to be honest, Rose took all of her buildup and threw it away for me when she knocked Finn out of the way of the blast. I'm glad to hear she has basically no role in ROS because I honestly cannot forgive such rank stupidity as that.
I'm not sure what they should have done for VII - IX, but it isn't what they did, that's for sure.

I agree, it made no sense for him to just pop up later and then for no reason I can understand have a role in the rest of the films. If he'd made it out with Finn that'd be different, but the sudden reappearance of his character later leaves a plot hole. I could take or leave Rose, honestly, she seemed like she didn't make a lot of sense in the second film, but it's even worse to take a character you build up and then drop them back to the background when if you make a character a major role you need to stand by it or not do it in the first place.
I think they should have dropped both Rose and Laura Dern's character; have Akbar survive and take command of the fleet, so instead of having Po lead a pointless and ill-conceived insurrection against his own command, he could have accompanied Finn on their mission. I think Po and Finn working together would have been a great dynamic.

I haven't seen IX still, so cannot comment there, but I've heard it was a mess.

I just can't buy the plot for 9, it's too far fetched to make any kind of sense.

Shame about your holiday plans going down the pan. I think a lot of us can relate. Only the other day, I booked two tickets for my boyfriend and I to see Pentatonix when they're in the UK in June next year (I hope that there'll be a vaccine of some sorts by then!). So far, that's the only real "event" on the docket for me.
Keep yourself and your family safe and well! And, enjoy all the madness that I'm sure DIsney+ offers
I did get to spend the week with family at least and it was really good to do so. I already miss the relaxation I had then.
My daughter's currently binge watching the Lilo & Stitch TV cartoon; I had only seen the original movie for the first time this year, so this was a pleasant surprise.
