And with it, my wait continues for a DLC fighter I can get truly excited about. So far we're 0/8. Can the streak last all the way through the second fighter's pass? Only time will tell.

Sorry got nostalgic there...
His building/crafting seem like it would be more convoluted than fun or interesting (although that impression is just from the trailer, so we do need to wait for the actual details of how it works), and visually, I hate his stiff limbs. They work fine in Minecraft, but as an action game character... he seems stiff and awkward to say the least.
I personally am rather easygoing. I find a lot of enjoyment from things like the music and stages, the variety in the gameplay and of course since I know a lot of video game franchises each new character on their own is at least nice to check out. I might not have a huge connection with every character that might be chosen but in regards of the whole theme of characters throughout video game history, lots of the characters make sense. =3
If you'd go by who really would stand for Mario RPG games, Geno is just a partner character. Paper Mario would be the clear choice to represent it if they'd specifically go there. Rocket Knight Adventures would be a Konami thing plus from a franchise that is not cared about by its own creators.
Klonoa is a nice Namco character but I somewhat doubt they'd choose his over the widely more popular Tekken franchise.
Another Pichu? I doubt they'd put an echo of a Pikachu-esque character over, well, a Pikachu or different Pokémon if even.
While there could be a slim, slim chance for another Final Fantasy character somebay, I feel like they'd go with either another FFVII or a character from their newest installment instead from IV, simmply because to them, such characters would be more iconic and representative of the franchise. And there are also more Square-Enix franchises that are huge and could take said spot (Lara Croft from Tomb Raider or Sora from Kingdom Hearts for example)
Amaterasu is a neat pick but in terms of Capcom, there yet again would be some franchises quite bigger in regards of popularity. I'm personally a bit surprised that the only had a Resident Evil Spirits event. Said franchise definitely belongs in every article about vide game genres, specifically Survival Horror.
As for that list, those are only my personal highlights. I'd love to see absolutely anybody from any game I'm familiar with, and even characters I know nothing about I still can get excited for other people, and also understand why they were chosen. Just the other day even a friend and I were talking about how Steve is an excellent and appropriate choice for a Smash fighter because of Minecraft's significance and popularity, but that doesn't mean he holds any significance to me personally. Besides, in case you didn't watch the video, many of those choices aren't just because I want those characters, but because I believe they're good fits for the franchise as explained in the video. If it's just about the characters themselves then I could no doubt come up with better ones, but most of those were chosen with my personal interests in combination with their applicability to the series in terms of either gameplay, or what Smash Bros represents.
In regards of YouTubers trying to make a point, I personally found the "Smash Math" series by https://www.youtube.com/c/BackseatYT quite interesting.
When it comes to characters that come off as unique it's mostly the nature of the character as what Species they are, what body type they got and perhaps what type of attacks they perform. In terms o melee attackers, we got different sorts of martial artists or sword fighters, people who punch and kick ram into people or jump on them, clobber and slash.
Ranged attackers use projectiles fired from pistols, rocket launchers, magic books, fire breaths, thrown items and the sort.
We got sets of characters, characters that get supported by additional characters, characters in vehicles, characters that are machines, beasts, humans, toons, pets, plants, blocks and whatnot.
Examples:
-Olimar getting a Louie and Anne skin
-Yoshi a getting a Boshi and woolly Yoshi skin
-Pokémon Trainer getting different Trainers and starters from otehr reagions
Might be that such likely would need extra sounds to record but elseway it could be like a quick way to expand on existing franchises yet.
Like something akin to Chibi Robo could make a nice Nintendogs-sque stage with toys mixing up things with their appearances. Tetris would make lots of sense as a bunch of Pokéfloats-like platforms, and Rhythm Heaven is all about fun music and beats in a colorful presentation. Could make for a fun Wario Ware-esque stage.
