A Note of Caution + General Update

May you find what it is you are looking for.
First things first, when was the last time you backed up your data? Including all your tasteful images and smutt you might have on that one special drive that you don't want anyone else to see? Cause if it's been longer than a month, or like, in my case, ever. Go do that, now, go. Ignore this, go do that, gooooooooooooo!
You'd think someone that works with computer's for a living would have learned this lesson by now, and I mostly did. But when it came to all my various saved images of the glorious things I have on this site, and that I've taken off of it, it all was put into one place. One singular flashdrive, with the intent of 'well I'll put it on more places when I'm living alone and can do so.'
Well, guess who didn't do that?
Thisss guyyyyy.
Now, before I get to mellow dramatic, no the device didn't get smashed, lost, or otherwise destroyed. But what DID happen to it, is a bit of a 'fun' story.
So a few that might be reading might remember how I said I was going to try and get a bunch of my backlog out before beyond light dropped for D2 (which happened on Nov. 10th), as I knew that DLC would likely suck every ounce of my free time out of me for the next while (and so far, it very very much has and will likely continue to do so for a good bit >3<;), and so, that was the plan. I got a good few stories done, and planned on getting a good batch finished, and then would post it all before jumping in to the DLC...
Well, before working on the second half of the batch that I wanted to get to, some guys came into my apartment to finally finish up the inner wall that they had torn out to fix some mold damage. No worries, I'll just pull the drive out, take a separate laptop I had from college into the other room, plug it in, and continue working right? Well, see, I would, if I didn't accidentally force the drive into the wrong port...and completely remove all the prongs in one fell swoop.
What followed was a bit of confusion, attempts at plugging it into different ports, feeling how incredibly loose it was once plugged in, looking inside the drive, and becoming absolutely mortified as I realized what I had done and what I had just lost. 6+ years of saved images, gifs, video's, and commissions, along with various other payed for works, all locked away, on a device now completely stripped of it's ability to communicate with the outside world.
Needless to say, writing became the last thing on my mind very rapidly, as I frantically tried to search for a way to fix the issue. That day I went over to Best Buy's Geek Squad, and was told they where unable to assist, before looking up online various Data recovery options, and learning that the procedure was rather 'simple', but the process would either require soldering or me being extremely lucky.
And so...I sent it off to a place online, just hopping and praying I wouldn't get screwed over....and got lucky, so so so f-ing lucky. They could repair the drive and grab all the files off of it, and they did so, before sending back a harddrive with all of it on it. Just got it back, and it's all there, every bit of it. Many tears of joy where shed this day, as I quickly grabbed all the files off of the drive, then compressed it, and shoved it onto google drive, and many many other places. The cost of such recovery hit me like a tone of bricks, but, thankfully I am in a position where affording it just means I'll be sitting on my backlog for a month or so with only the stuff I jumped on prior to this whole event coming in >//> but with my massive backlog still in effect, I don't think that much of a problem, considering the amount of things I got recovered ; 3 ;.
My plan now is to try and work through enough D2 content to likely spend thanksgiving break eating food and writing, to get out the backlog that has done nothing but grow since all this started xD So hopefully yet another flood from me will be coming in the coming week, so stay tuned for that!
And if it hasn't been hammered home yet, back up your data, ALL, of your data. Learn frommmm my stupidityyyyyyyyyyy ; 3 ;

FA+

Been through a thing like this once before, was around 2017 when my PC decided to just die on me and swipe my entire disc, same week that I've had planned to copy it all over to my onedrive.
It was one hell of an expensive recovery, but not only was it important to recover all my art files, but it held hundreds of important pictures of a beloved person. One expensive lesson learned, but it was worth to pay to get it all back.
Happy it solved in the end!
A saying I heard once was 'the most memorable lessons are also the most costly ones,' and it VERY much holds true in this case. But, yes, I am happy it all was able to work out to a general positive in this case ; 3 ; appreciate you sharing your sympathiesssss!
I'm glad you managed to save it in the end but wow I would've been horrified if I had ended up in that situation too.
I will have to do some backup tomorrow, thanks for the headsup and cautionary tale ; u ;
Do the thing! yes! I fully recommend! ; 3 ; don't want any of your precious works to vanish! aaaaaa save them everywhereeeeeee!
But hey! I'm glad to hear that your own story have a good ending at least. It's much more better, than lost all of your "6-year-stored" data without any ability to restore it!
But thank you ; 3 ; I very glad too, and I'm glad the way your doing it is working for you as welll!
how to say! Me, to be honest, doesn't like google targeting algorithms, which offer you information based on your previous requests. This makes it harder to find something really new for yourself. Because of this, the YouTube's (what is also part of the Google) home page has become for me to the most boring place on the Internet for a very loooooong time. To find something new, I have to dig deeply and purposefully for a long time. And there is not always free time for this. =(
By the way... when you say in your journal not this part:
Well, before working on the second half of the batch that I wanted to get to, some guys came into my apartment
my imagination just brought me the next thing: https://youtu.be/4wX2xBOuzRg
But I do agree with your sentiments on Youtube, the home page is very much just 'here is what you already like' cause they want you to click on it xD which is nice for familiarities sake but makes it near impossible to find new interests unless you actively look for it. I've been rather fine with it though as it throw's in enough curve balls for me to keep me entertained, but I can totally understand getting really bored fast xD.
I just use google docs like hard core for my writings and sharing of said writings, so like, its just where I keep all of that anyway, so not to much further just to throw all the pictures up there too x3
as for that second bit, fpff yeah honestly thought the same when I was typing it XD
Happy to know it's all back though! You and your destiny 2 addiction cx
and yessssss it is my liffffe I can't help itttttttafheoahf >3<
At least it all got recovered, six years of content would just be painful to lose. A pertinent lesson if any as to why you need backups, and possibly even backups of the backups!
