Ways to feature gods in fiction a make it work
5 years ago
Inspired by the trainwreck that was Blood of Zeus, I've made this list about ways to feature gods in fiction and don't make the story a waste of time. (Because otherwise, gods should have resolved the problem right at the beginning with their divine powers.)
• They're uncaring for humanity. They let people be abused or abuse them directly. But you have to roll with it and don't try to make them sympathetic. It doesn't convince anyone.
• The majority of them are uncaring for humanity, and we can concentrate on the few caring ones.
• Some of them are actually evil. It has been done to death, it's boring, it has no reference IRL: the only religions with a good VS evil scenario are the Abrahamic ones and Zoroastrism.
• They haven't a human personality and they're the embodiment of concepts and natural forces, prone to bend to the fiercest worshipper. Like the numen in Roman religion before they started mocking Greek pantheon.
• They're dumb and easily gullible. It makes sense because intelligence is first of all a survival skill, but they don't need to survive. But the story and the characters have to acknowledge that.
• They're just smoky spirits that can intervene in very slow and hard to notice ways. Maybe they can summon a blizzard. But in three months.
• Their powers have limitations. No one of them can revive people, Zeus can't directly throw bolts out of his hands but summon thunderstorms, only Hermes can fast-travel and Apollo has no elemental powers at all.
• There's some code of conduct about not intervening directly in human affairs. Maybe because it ended up in a near-apocalypse during the early times. Or because the super gods say so. Or because humanity must learn how to behave by itself.
• They feed upon human faith and without that, they lose power and fade away. A la Neil Gaiman. But it requires them to be dumb or limited in their actions, otherwise, they would just cast prodigies back and forth to keep the faith alive.

Zeus is a rapist and they try to depict him sympathetically; Hera is so dumb in her pettiness that wants to revive the giants just to overthrow her husband; gods are immortal until they aren't anymore for the sake of drama, they can see everywhere except where they should keep an eye on.
But your question, there are a lot of papercuts in this show, and I'd say that the biggest problem is the pacing. There's stuff for at least ten more episodes here. Just let us pass more time with the protagonist and his human friends, before the climactic battle begins.
•I do like your ideas for using gods in any media like the one that the gods having some kind of code of conduct or rules that they can't not break because due to something that happen in early times that nearly destroy all of existence and/or a higher force that created the gods place unbreakable rules on them (but the gods can bend or use loopholes within some of the rules like gods can't intervene within mortal affairs but if a god possess a mortal resulting in the mortal's existence being erase and replace by the god's reshaping the vessel into a less powerful mortal form of the god).
•And I like the idea of the gods being the physical embodiment of concepts and forces like of time and gravity that pops into existence and their existence allows that concept or force to exist but with human-like forms (some with animal-like appearances like Anubis) with "perfect godly" physique and some human traits like the god of evil and the goddess of good can fell in love with each other (like the god of storms being something like this).
•I really like the idea of gods being very dumb and gullible, naive because it would make sense since they don't need to be smart or adaptable like mortals. And because of that I'm picturing that the gods having no concept of modesty or personal space too so they're always goes around completely nude having their privates always on full display due the gods not having the need of covering their nude form or the sense of personal space and I imagine the gods also discovering/learning about sex or copulation from the mortals due to the gods never need to reproduce the gods would find doing it fun.
•I have some interesting concepts that be use with gods I like the idea of gods unawarly bringing birth to monsters and races of the world. Like a god would be bathing at a waterfall but the water that was dripping off his nude body as he walk off started to take form and become mindless horny fish-men that seek out mortal males or a pubic hair of a rugged god took form and become savage brutist Minotaur that seek out attractive mortal women to impregnate them giving birth the Minotaur race, or one god that wanted a special steed so he decided to create his own by taking a man and a horse then fuse them together to create a centaur that becomes his steed thus the centuars have become a breed that are use as mounts for the gods.
•What do you think about the idea of ancient gods that becomes dormant and over many eons their dormant form becomes a part of the landscape or become the foundation of the realm? Like I remember reading a book that take place on a planet that is a nude body of a giant dormant goddess I think something happen in the times when there were only giant gods but there was a war between the gods and their war have destroy all the planets of the universe and even almost destroy the entire universe till some higher power stop the war by putting the gods in a eternal slumber and the fix the universe by replacing all of the destroy planets with the slumbering bodies of the gods as the new orbiting planets of the universe and after some eons later other races and creatures started to take form that live on these gods. There was one part where the main character's group have to adventured into the musky forest that was the slumbering goddess's pubes and they tumble upon a tribe of people that live within the goddess's pubes and survive by using her sweat as drinking water even to bathe it was a weird book. And there was this another story that I have read use a similar concept to that like it take place in a ancient wasteland-like ruin setting where the world is littered by the dormant bodies of giant ancient gods as landmarks and civilizations have build around and on them I think there was a village that was form around the huge balls of a god while his huge junk hangs over top of the village overshadowing it.
•I like the idea of powerful gods very presence can warp reality and mortals within their presence. Like their presence can warp and twist mortals into mindless beast or monsters like a demonic deity presence will warp any mortals within his presence into horny mindless demons or imps.
•How about the idea of gods are not really evil or good toward mortals? Like they just don't acknowledge the existence of mortals they view humanity as something that is insignificant kinda like mindless animals at best or objects that are just there at worst due to their alien god mindset. So insignificant in fact that the gods don't really even acknowledge the existence of the mortals because they too busy in their eternal battles with each other while are mortals caught in the middle of it being use as unwilling pawns or chess pieces that they uses in their games against other gods or becoming casualties by the destruction of their battles of godlike proportions. It reminds me of this strange adult graphic novel that read a long time ago about nude ancient gods and god-like beings fighting it out in modern day in a free-for-all causing destruction with the mortals of the modern day being caught in the middle of it. It basically a epic slugfest between hyper endowed nude gods with a lot of destruction and mortals being caught in it getting toss around or wind up get transform by the gods into mindless monsters and beast to be use as cannon fodder (There was one god in the comic where he actually use his power to make a Pegasus by forming it out of some guy making a Pegasus that have some physical human traits like having a huge floppy human junk instead of horse one it kinda like the Pegasus version of a dorse you can search up images of them to see what I mean. And then use the human-like Pegasus as his steed). Its about gods that are in a never-ending battle with each other (I remember the comic explained that the gods will always seek each other out and battle it was like they are eternally fated to always fight in endless battle) and their battles were causing destruction toward the realm and it's mortals inhabitants and then something happen that cause all of the gods to suddenly disappear and with the gods gone the inhabitants of the realm can rebuild and over time humanity starts becoming more advance. Skip to the modern day when the gods suddenly starts reappearing in the present day like there was this one god (I think he was a Greek or Roman god) that appears in a alley terminator movie style and is mildly bewildered by the appearance of the modern world but despite that he still nonchalantly start wandering around even exposing his nude body to people in public like there was a drunk bum that was sleeping in the alley and then gaining the attention of a crowd when he wander out in a city district. But despite gaining their attention the god continue on while completely paying them no mind and as people were taking pictures and videos of the nude god a another god appears on the scene and they quickly start brawling calling down lightning and throwing around cars as their brawl is causing destruction to the city. The news that was covering it describe it as two nude individuals with strange abilities that are lock in a battle that is destroying the city and at some point the military forces got involve trying to stop them but they were pretty much useless in stopping them (they use a tank on them but they pretty much just get up and shrug it off and one of them pick up the tank then use it to send the other god flying) their battle was even unintentionally destroying the military force. And there was this other interesting battle that took place within a underground subway station between Anubis (I think it was Anubis he was a anthro jackal-man) and a demon looking being. Their battle pretty much started like the previous battle Anubis suddenly appears somewhere in the subway then wander around till he encounter some people that was waiting for a train some try interact with him but again like the previous gods he would continues on like they are not even there like they are so insignificant that they don't exist to him like Anubis just stood there while one dude was messing with his huge junk and the god didn't show any awareness of it. The as the god stood there pondering about something while his junk is getting grope by a mortal he sense the presence of a demon-like god that is nearby and upon seeing them each other they quickly rush toward each other clashing starting their battle. Anubis and the demon god was throwing out punches and energy blast sending each other flying as their fight spread destruction to the subway station the demon god punch Anubis flying into a incoming train wrecking it at some point Anubis send the demon god into a crowd of people and he suddenly use his demonic powers to turn the mortals around him into mindless super hung monstrous demons and imps that he sent to attack Anubis. The endowed demons and imps was overwhelming Anubis with their numbers but is barely able to fight them off they force him through a wall that landed to crowd of people upon seeing them Anubis uses his powers to turn them into super hung anthro living shadow-like beings that looks like him then sent them to fight the demons and imps. There were many other battles happening all around the world too like one that was a kaiju-like battle between a giant male medusa-like monster with living snakes for pubes and crack hair (I think that all of the snake-like beings in the comic have the trait of having snakes as some of body hair) and a rugged giant, one between a hyper endowed huge shark beastman (have powers similar to Aquaman and can turn mortals into mindless shark beastmen) and a endowed harpy-man, a fight between huge endowed stone Gargoyle against a lion beastman, a hyper endowed Dragon-man against a hyper endowed Minotaur (I think was a Minotaur), etc. The military force did get involve in some of the battles but they would wind up getting destroy or get turn into mindless endowed monsters or beast by the gods to be use as cannon fodder against the opposing god. The have gotten so bad that the military pretty much just "let them fight" and just focus on dealing with the dangerous monsters and creatures that are created by the gods. I don't know how the book ended never got to finish it. And sorry for making this post big but the point that I'm trying to say is that I like your ideas on how to use/write gods. And let me know if you wanna to hear of my ideas for gods.
