r/WallStreetBets noticed that Gamestop was over-shorted (debts for stocks due to short-selling being a bit higher than the actual number of stocks available), and they all decided to start buying up what was left. This drove the price through the roof as now the short-sellers need to buy back stock at any price in order to satisfy their debt from the short-sell, or risk Bad Things ™.
The fact that it is a massive hedge fund that stands to suffer the most from this is the cherry on top.

Difference this time is a bunch of mooks on Reddit noticed it, bought up all the remaining stock, and caused a 'short-squeeze'. Hence the price going through the ceiling, all for the specific purpose of making a hedge-fund suffer.

Selling short by lots of people and institutions was a major cause of the crash of 1929. Not the only cause, but it was the explosive charge that blew the stock market apart.

Some people are saying this will destabilize the economy. I doubt it. The fed can print money all day long. As long as people accept the money,it has value. However,this might be used as an excuse to shut down the economy more,blaming the randos on Reddit,and used to shut down even more free speech while strangling the economy more.

common tales from former GameStop employees are often about how they were extremely pressured or forced to try and talk customers into buying additional useless shit they didn't need for outrageous prices. failure to do so would often lead to write ups or getting outright fired.

furthermore, they've come under heavy fire at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic because GameStop ordered all of its employees to show up and remain open for business during lockdowns in clear defiance to public health and safety. anyone who decided to follow the government issued rules of lockdowns was at risk of being fired.
furthermore, as if ordering their employees to defy health and safety regulations by threatening their jobs wasn't bad enough, GameStop also absolutely and spectacularly failed to provide anything and everything for their employees.
GameStop didn't provide their employees with enough masks, let alone the correct masks,
GameStop didn't provide their employees with gloves of any kind,
and last but not least
GameStop didn't even provide their employees with any kind of hand sanitizer.
any sanitizer that was available and used on location usually was brought in by one of the employees. GameStop itself didn't do shit.
