Most of the people complaining about "cultural appropriation" aren't actually part of said culture and are trying really fucking hard to pretend otherwise. They're people with 1% non-white blood who are ashamed of their 99% whiteness and use their hollow claims to the heritage as a surrogate for personality.

I personally would make sure to link to information on authentic wendigo legend (in particular, that some variations had antlers and fur) to reduce any contribution I'd be making to cultural erasure.
