Back from the dead but...*rolls for initiative*

General
It's been quite a long time since I got up off my ass and did anything worthwhile. Work, family issues, Covid, depression, the usual suspects.
Well I wasted alot of my time, and money, on Genshin Impact and I am slowly trying to break free from it's grasp. One of my coworkers who also is a big gamer heard my many woes and suggested something I have heard of but never gave it much thought.
He introduced me to Dungeons and Dragons. My previous encounters with DnD were the two arcade games, a dvd movie that was like a choose your own adventure, and apparently a Dragonlance novel I read that I didn't know was part of the DnDverse. The only tabletop rpg I ever played was an old copy of Battletech I stumbled upon back in high school and some 40K figurines I tried to paint years back. I mostly liked the stories and books and video games than the tabletop games.
Well he pointed me in the direction of such things like Critical Role, Harmonquest and The Stuff Of Legends and watching the games play out looked fun. I really enjoyed watching a muppet with giant tits swing around a battleaxe. ^_^ I'm now reading a graphic novel called Adventure Zone, played a digital board game called Fighting Fantasy: Deathtrap Dungeon and just finished the first adventure and playing Knights of Pen and Paper. Apparently I have other DnD inspired stuff that I didn't realize. Dragons Crown, Goblin Slayer, Delicious in Dungeon and various other games and books are similar to the style.
I was going to buy something from the book store today after getting confused about which edition to play and trying to figure out the difference from Baldurs Gate and Pathfinder. I chickened out. There was a starters kit for $20, an essentials kit for $25, 3 books like the players guide, dungeon master manual, monster manual at $160. Boxes of spell cards, maps, tiny ass figurines, expensive dice. And so many other books and guides it overwhelmed me.
I passed up on getting anything and went home feeling defeated. Next week though I will attempt to go to the nearby game store and ask for assistance or ask to watch a game play out, I dunno. Maybe I'll chicken out again, maybe not.
If there is anyone around who has dabbled in DnD style roleplaying and has suggestions for a new player, I'd be very grateful for some advice.
One of the things that got my interest.

Tulok The Barbrarian is another good YouTube channel, if you wanna build D&D versions of your favorite pop-culture characters.
I was very surprised to have learned that DnD is now a Wizards of the Coast product. I was very out of the loop.
According to others I have been roleplaying forever but haven't realized it. I don't think my fursona and those 'adventures' count but they say it is similar.
But I actually want to try the whole tabletop roll dice thing, not the other role playing.

But this beastiary had details about main characters like Shining Armor and Philomena along with all the other things living in the universe. Don't know if they had stats or not, didn't get that much of a look at it since I was having trouble trying to carry a DnD starter set, essentials kit, the 3 books which totaled over $200 before I remembered I left my books a million coupon at home like the idiot I am.
I am a rookie at the game, a terrible role player/actor, well, kinda, I've been playing a game/campaign for 2 years, I don't buy much of it, mostly get digital manuals, the player handbook (free) is the basic, and I should say enough.
Websites you will love are
https://5e.tools/ (the wiki of D&D 5 edition (my favorite, good for rookies too))
and probably
https://roll20.net/ (I play with friends in this site)
and well, keep us in touch with your findings. *hugs
Luckily he says there are small short sessions too and I don't need to break the bank to enjoy it. Those cards do look badassed though and browsing through the monster manual sure was interesting.
The only rpg I played before was Battletech but I was more um...playing it like a wargame than an rpg. Still upsets me that my friend who I played with used his trio of 20ton light mechs to headshot my 80ton heavy with a critical hit, and it was his first game.
My best suggestion is to be a player first, you don't really have to be a DM so soon. Just saying.
Seems there is a ton of video games as well based off tabletops that I was unaware of. I was very surprised to find out that the old game of Fallout 2 I used to play as a kid was one.
I've yet to watch an episode of Critical Role yet but I have seen animated parts of various scenes and want to know more about Jester. ^_^
I have finished watching Stuff of Legends on Youtube and am greatly enjoying Harmonquest. Didn't realize Goblin Slayer is kinda sorta like it too.
My friend wants me to try and do a Zoom thing with a few others because of the Covid but I have bad wifi near me and I really don't want others to see me online. Don't think I'll be able to do a live game since everyone at work that plays lives so far away and we don't have time during our breaks to do it at work.
He has helped me kill time at work during dead times by being a GM, came up with scenarios, and we flip coins instead of use dice. Apparently my luck is so bad during one game that when trying to shoot a zombie behind me I miss and shoot my own ass before getting bit and getting turned. Roll a one my ass...
Still I am very eager to try the actual game, though learning some of the games would be nice. Or learning the lore through novels. I think he told me to find some Forgotten Realms books that feature...Drizzle?
Never did get too good at the game to use tanks and jets though, just got into 4 v 4 fights, small scale wargaming. Mechs were pretty much just tanks with arms and legs. Man I miss reading those novels.
But, since you're starting rather fresh I have to recommend 5th edition D&D as a better start for you. As others here have said, 5th edition is by far more intro/newbie friendly than 3.5/Pathfinder.
Not that there is anything wrong with 3.5/Pathfinder, many many people still play it as proven by the extreme rarity of 3.5 edition books on the market. Anyone who has one of the now out of print 3.5 books is a dedicated player of the game who is NOT about to turn loose of their copies of the books! The basic 3.5 edition Players Handbook that every player needs is going for anywhere from $90 to $400 used right now (compared to the original $40 cover price). I'll admit it's level of detail and mechanics are a little more for players with some RPG experience under their belt.
For 5th edition you'll need at the very least the Player's Handbook ($40) and a basic polyhedral dice set (from $7 to $20 depending on how fancy you want to get), some extra 6-sided dice won't hurt (available wherever toys/dice are sold). And a group/DM willing to explain and be patient.
Robotech/Paladium system is kind of it's own weird hybrid cross of 2nd and 3rd edition D&D, luckily Paladium uses it as a basic standard across all their games, so if you like it, it's not a far jump to learn the Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles RPG, (an old favorite of mine), or any of their other game worlds, Heroes Unlimited (supers), Beyond the Supernatural (horror/monster hunting), After the Bomb (post apocalyptic TMNT) etc.
welcome back to the land of the living, sorry to hear microtransactions had you for a while.
Did max out my other catgirl stats though, but then I had to grind for materials, weapons, exp boosters...
The daily quests, the daily log in bonus, too many incentives, and the worst part is that it's fun and I do enjoy my time playing it. But I really want to play other stuff. I don't want to work hard in a game that will die whem they shut off the servers. I had that happen to me with Ace Combat Infinite.
Also I want to try something new. Well kinda new. Didn't realize DnD is from the 70s. Watching history videos on YT really surprises me.
One of these days I'll finish Sword Art. I got interested in it at first but got sidetracked once they got to the gun fighting game. I like the spin off anime with the tall woman playing the little girl and the Fatal Bullet game, mostly because I don't have to freaking play Kirito.
Also, there's plenty of free resources to help you get started if you look around online. Definitely look into that before buying a bunch of sourcebooks.
Having a session zero gives you a chance to not only let the DM know you as a player, it also gives you an idea what sort of game they run. Might be all about the fantasy and tripping the light fantastical or a gritty war game where every stat best be properly minned to their absolute max. Or maybe they're more into interactions at the table, taking a step back and seeing where everyone sets off, while ignoring the carefully placed, all-too obviously important NPC sitting and stewing in the darkest corner of the tavern.
Knowing what you're in for and what you're hoping to encounter along the way can help make the game memorable, even if you can't remember what spells does what, what exactly constitutes an attack of opportunity these days, and why the elder players gets a horrified, glazed expression whenever someone utters the word "THACO."
Have fun with it and if at all possible, have at least a couple of already-made friends at the table. They can help you along until you've got the basics down. Oh, and that's another thing, remember that you don't have to master the game in order to play it. Even the dungeon master doesn't have to know everything (despite what it says in their title.) That's what the books, .pdfs, and digital sources are for.
If you have any specific questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them. I've been playing and running the game since about forever and while I definitely have a preferred style, I think there's more than enough room in the game (and the other RPGs, there's way more than just D&D,) for everyone to have their particular brand of fun.
While I'm not as familiar with 5th Ed (had a character made but the game never got run), I'm pretty passingly familiar with Pathfinder 1st Edition (played for a long time). Should you wish to discuss anything about it, feel free to hit me up on my Discord. It's listed on my FA page. Just let me know you're Dusty from FA. ^_^

I've got my metal dice; my guide books; 18 level 1 characters (that I have yet to play, because I can never find a group). Oh! I did find one person who might DM for us, but we need one or two more players, but hopefully it works out this time around, because the last three groups fizzled out. I tried to DM my own campaign, and I've got a Discord server all set up and everything, and and and and and—*DEEP BREATH*
:D
Made my own... Word character sheets... PDF versions kept deleting info...
I really wanted to buy the Dungeon board game too. Looked fun. *sign* I miss the days when I would play Risk with my family. I remember playing email chess and battleship with some folks back when I was in the service. Don't think there's a way to play a game tlike that?
There are some games that are play-by-post on Discord, as well as some on audio or video, like with Zoom or something.
I haven't played since high school! I've been so stupidly excited to get into it again, but it's been so hard to find a group that sticks around long enough for the campaign to even start.
I'm nearly at the end of Campaign One of Critical Role (on episode 112, with just a few episodes left until the end; then on to Campaign Two!) They also did another version of the animated theme song, featuring Vox Machina from the first campaign, but I think the animation style was better in the Mighty Nein version.
*Takes a breath* Also, good choice for the Crap Guide to D&D video. He's done several, and I absolutely love them. <3

My best friend in high school had once completely ignored the quest I had spent all this time working on. He was on a ship sailing to the next destination, when suddenly he goes full-on murder-hobo, and shouts "BITE YO NOSE—STAB U IN DE EYES!" and proceeds to jam a spoon into the captains eyeball, and then jumped overboard, and started swimming out into the ocean... for some reason. To this day, his character is still out there somewhere...cackling like a dolphin. I think he was probably high out of his mind that day.
My friend and cousin used to be my main players. I still remember the day my friend talked his way past my cousin's guard, and infiltrated his treasury. He released hundreds of monsters called "Gold Bugs" (they look like gold coins, but they actually eat gold), and by the time my cousin came back to his castle, he found his treasury mostly empty, with an infestation of Gold Bugs. Lol.
Good times.
I've been listening to YT vids reading tales from Reddit about some of the hilarious nat 20 and rolled 1 stories. Apparently throwing smaller party members at your enemies is a thing, and most end badly. Come across a giant cthulu monster, bard wants to fuck it, bard makes eldritch horror his plaything. ^_^
Goliaths chucking gnomes at enemies... is certainly a thing that happens at times. Lol.
And yeah, character sheets are a must to keep track of all the details.
*Sings* "Phn'glui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wagh'nagl fhtagn. Boy, that's really quite a mouthful, can't quite cram it in my noggin; not today. I try to say it anyway~"
So you're into DnD now! Well if you're into those videos, you need to enjoy some Puffin Forest, and Dingo Doodles as well! Rough start with Dingo's adventure initially but at the same time, fun. Gets good. ^_~

I have my first party member.
I also did not know there was a Star Wars miniatures game! I so want to buy a fleet of ships right now.
