Gonna play with myself for a bit.

My co worker who has been hyping me up with DnD has told me that due to many circumstances that are out of my control it will be very difficult to even join his adventures since he and his group, some from work as well, are half way into their 3rd campaign that they have spent at least 2 years in. O_o Hell I just started to watch Critical Role and was not expecting the first episode to be 3 1/2 hours long. I don't think I'll last a campaign.
I did not realize how time consuming this hobby is, and I have my hands full just looking up the manuals online and scratching the surface about the lore. I don't even know all the races and classes yet, they may have another edition out by the time I'm ready.
He is going to help ease me in with these short quests though. Little Noob Redshirt, probably gonna die horribly, but future characters will learn from the mistakes made. Or just keep resurrecting him, her, it. I wanted to make a Warforged but he says to start off as a normal human warrior to get the feel of it.
Once I figure out how to set up Discord and Roll20 I'll practice with my family if they are willing or just play against myself. I did that before when learning how to play Battletech before getting wiped out by my friend who I just introduced the game to. Maybe buy the Starter and Essential kit and play with the premades and see how long I can keep them alive before I make my own.
Did just get a cute miniature of a fox lady with a spear I was hoping to use. Till then I'll just edgumacate myself with how to play and hopefully try something small scale for now.

Now he wants me to write a backstory and make up my own world since we'll be 'borrowing' details from DnD but not making an official world. Making a chinese knock off pretty much. He's even going to make a 3d printed figurine of Ron for me. I wasn't expecting him to survive this long! I didn't realize I have to make a story. Ah, it may help kill time at work at least.
And yeah, CritRole is pretty lengthy. Good thing I don't have a day job, so I've been able to binge watch a couple episodes a day for a while. I'm close to the end of the first campaign though. They do some one-shots too, which are shorter adventures, but the session can still last hours.
Some groups play-by-post, if schedules are conflicting. So on Discord they each take their turn when they're on. Probably not the best way to play, but supposedly it works. I haven't tried it yet.
I have a Roll20, and I have yet to figure out how the hell to use the thing. I've got a D&D Beyond account, but I can't seem to access it except through the Edge browser, and even then it's limited because everything is stuck behind a paywall, and the PDF character sheets keep deleting all my changes I make.
Starting off as a human fighter is probably the best way to start. That was my plan, but then I think I made her a little more complicated, so I started another new character.
At the moment my friend wants me to make a backstory of the character that he's been trying to kill the last few weeks. Stay tuned for the story of Ron Redshirt, the son of farmers who I expectded to die on his first job quest but somehow survived a small goblin horde burning down his farmhouse, slew the giant rat under the tavern cellar, and successfully took down a drunk orc by throwing a drunk dwarf headfirst into his crotch. But nearly killed himself helping a cat down a tree for a kid. Yeah, the cat was more of a challenge than the giant rat and drunk orc.
He wants me to write a short backstory so it'll be easier to keep track of everything when he 3d prints my figure for me. That and he thinks his other friends will enjoy Ron's misadventures.
Also since we won't be making him part of any actual DnD lore the world I put Ron in will be my own, Gods and Evils, races etc. We'll just 'borrow' some races and classes, call them something else, no one will know the difference. Pretty much I'm making a chinese knock off of my own. MY OC, DO NOT STEAL! ^_^
Kinda funny that some random red shirt I expected to die a Dragon's Lair death has lasted so far.
Best of luck, and keep being a happy cute little snugglebunny.
The finer nuances you ultimately pick up with experience. For example: a background isn't strictly required, but it's good to have because sometimes the fun of the game comes from 'what you make of yourself' more than what rolls you make. That, or the shenanigans those rolls apply to your background.
'I am the son of a family of farmers who have been farmers for 3 generations now!'
'Great; You can help get this cow out of our way! Surely you've dealt with cows?'
'Err, yes! yes I can!' *walks over to the cow, thinking back to the fact the most experience he had was not getting kicked and being allergic.* 'Don't sneeze, don't sneeze, don't snee...'
<DM: *rolls a die* 'Roll your Constitution.'>
<player rolls a 5 and gets 7>
DM: You're sneezing and sneezing and the cow is now startled and.... it gets out of the path!
Party: Hurray!
player: *sniffles, then keeps sneezing*
The silliness is sometimes the best part.
My friend who was the DM when I first made Ron knew things were going crazy when I made Ron kill a goblin with a potato during our first game
Right now I'll just focus on keeping Ron alive long enough. And then I'll work on these two Tabaxi girls.
Still playing merry little campaign games with friends
I just wanna stab a goblin and maybe sleep with a kobold.
Pathfinder is a clone of D*&D version 3.5. The snowballing feats make it a hard game for umpires to balance.
6th is likely to be 5th, but without the concept that race automatically governs whether a person is good or evil. A pretty minot tweak,and one that most of us ran in older edtions anyway.
I just got a pair of female Tabaxi Rouges to use, I did not realize just how tiny they are. I do not think I will be able to paint them.
It's why 5th took a laundry list of modifiers and boiled the majority of them down to Advantage and Disadvantage. The rest, whether "crunch" or "fluff" is only important if you want it to be.
In other news I got several custom figurines on Etsy that are mostly catgirls and a few wolf and lizard women. I just recently bought 3 skeleton sword and shieldmen, 3 skeleton spearmen, and 3 skeleton axemen made by Reaper at the gamestore along with some spare bases to use. I wonder if I have to look up specific rules or cards for skeletals with different weapons or not.
Neat. My first campaign started on a ship, so we sort of began in medias res. We got ambushed by pirates, and then stumbled on their base of operations while resupplying after the attack. Now we're trying to get away without getting caught, but we ended the last session backed into a corner.
