“Things don't go wrong and break your heart so you can become bitter and give up. They happen to break you down and build you up so you can be all that you were intended to be.”

"No...no...no!" she breathed.
Frantically, she looked around, desperately trying to find a way to stop the fabric from coming undone. Amidst a tumultuous tsunami, awash in the rushing waters of the salty sea, the only thing within reach were the walls of the hospital. Yet, even if there was something usable within range, Sweetheart had only one usable arm with which to grasp it. But, that one functioning arm was already sheltering one of her infant sisters. Her other sister was on her back, slowly losing the security of the position.
She looked down at the unwinding piece of tied fabric and knew that she had no viable options. She could either release the sister she held with her operative arm and save the one at her back, or she could do nothing and continue to hold her sister in her arm. As it was, any decision that she made would be at the expense of the life of the discarded sibling. Of course, that was no option. But, what could she do? What could she use to prevent her sister from being swept away? Was there no hope? Was there nothing she could do?

I'm reminded of the tragic story of a woman who lost her two children trying to take shelter in Hurricane Sandy back in 2012. I think that was on Staten Island? But yeah this is a chilling story!
And whew - 9/11 I remember watching that unfold from upstate, some service did get shut down since a few important lines passed by the WTC (and a couple stations were lost entirely, with Cortlandt Street on the then 1,9 services and the PATH WTC station). I think the PATH tunnels got flooded a bit too and so that 24-hour service was paused too. Always chilling to see that sort of disruption in New York City.
During 9/11, after the planes hit, they shut everything down for a while. I remember having to walk from Grand Street all the way to the ferry. It was the only ferry they were going to allow to go to Staten Island, so I had to run to catch it, toward the end. I will never forget how eerily quiet the streets were. No birds, cars and the handful of people you did see just exchanged terrified glances, but also said nothing.
I remember the furry internet lists at the time going nuts with everyone asking, "Are you okay? Is so-and-so okay? My God, this is the end!"
