The head of the European Union's executive Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has spoken of her outrage at Russia's deadliest onslaught on Kyiv since July - which also damaged the EU's delegation office in the Ukrainian capital.
At least 21 people, including four children, were killed and dozens more wounded in the bombardment, Ukrainian officials said.
A five-storey residential building was destroyed, and the EU mission and nearby British Council were damaged.
...
Many of those killed were in the five-storey residential building in the south-eastern Darnytskyi district on Kyiv's left bank.
A missile tore through the block of flats at about 03:00, causing it to collapse.
Diggers removed rubble, and rescue workers clambered on top of smouldering parts of the building looking for survivors.
Officials said three of the children killed were aged two, 14 and 17. Several other youngsters were wounded.
For comparison, here are links to the summary news coverage from Al Jazera for 28-Aug and 29-Aug as well as their specific article about the event, and here is the ISW report for August-28-2025 because with events in the war it is always good to check at least two different sources.

1250 days of full-scale war...

For reference, the Great War (aka World War 1) lasted 1565 days while World War II lasted ~2193 days for the UK (from the 1-Sept-1939 invasion of Poland to the 2-Sept-1945 surrender of Japan), although for Germany it was 2076 days, and for the USSR their Great Patriotic War was 'only' 1533 days (starting from Operation Barbarossa) and for the USA it was 1365 days (starting from the Dec 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor).

Meanwhile... news from Donetsk
Posted a year agoMost people who follow the news from Ukraine have likely been focused on the Ukrainian army's "thunder run" on Vladivostok, which has taken a small town whose name looks like something like "Sudsy" or "Sudzy" (Sudzha) but hasn't made it to Putingrad or St. Putinsburg yet... (the recent Ukrainian invasion of Russia, or maybe it should be called a "special military operation" or a “counter-terrorism operation”, which I've read are the local euphemisms for invasion and war)
...but among all of the news from the Kursk and Belgorad regions of the territory internationally recognized as Russia (where there have not been widespread reports in the international news of indiscriminate killing of civilians or mass looting) there was a reminder about a large city in the territory internationally recognized as Ukraine but not under the control of the Ukrainian government in Kyiv that has been suffering the effects of military action for the last ten years or so.

At least seven people have been injured in central Donetsk following a Ukrainian strike that caused a fire in a shopping centre, news agencies are reporting.
The city - currently under Russian military control - has been shelled by Ukraine since late this morning, according to Denis Pushilin, the Russia-backed governor of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic.†

🇺🇦 children's hospital hit during 🇷🇺 missile ...
Posted a year agoUkrainian🇺🇦 children's hospital hit during Russian🇷🇺 missile salvo
More than 30 civilians have been killed and 150 wounded across Ukraine today (July 8) by a massive Russian military missile salvo that included some hypersonic missiles. Ukraine’s largest children’s hospital in Kyiv was hit and one wing/building was heavily damaged during this Russian missile barrage (photos are easy to find online). Russia denies (of course, as always†) intentionally targeting civilians and accuses Ukraine but Ukraine has announced it will be cooperating with an ICC investigation so I'm sure we will eventually see some evidence of whose missile hit the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital hospital in Kyiv on July 8, 2024. It happened during a massive Russian missile barrage on heavily populated cities that resulted in a lot of civilian deaths and injuries, so I think it is reasonable to say that the children's hospital would not be damaged today if the Russian military had not launched a full-scale surprise invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and had not launched a swarm of missiles at Ukrainian cities today.

† from the AP article :
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the strikes targeted Ukrainian defense plants and military air bases and were successful. It denied aiming at any civilian facilities and claimed without evidence that pictures from Kyiv indicated the damage was caused by a Ukrainian air defense missile.
Since early in the war that is well into its third year, Russian officials have regularly claimed that Moscow’s forces never attack civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, despite abundant evidence to the contrary, including Associated Press reporting.
More than 1,600 medical facilities have been damaged since the start of the war and 214 have been ruined completely, according to Ukrainian Health Ministry statistics published last month.

Dear Senator (name):
I am aware of this week's efforts to bring a vote for the national security supplemental assistance package that includes funding for Ukraine. After an overwhelming successful bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives, as your constituent, I urge you to vote in support of Ukraine. This crucial assistance not only benefits Ukraine against the ruthless onslaught of russian attacks, but a vast majority of the funds will remain in the United States and will promote jobs here.
This bill is in the national security interests of the United States and the entire Free World. Your support at this critical juncture is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Substantial Financial Assistance: With a staggering $61 billion earmarked for Ukraine, including humanitarian aid and economic support, this bill reflects the unwavering commitment of the international community to stand with Ukraine in its time of need.
Strategic Defense Provision: Addressing Ukraine's longstanding request for long-range ATACMS, this bill acknowledges the urgent need to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities and safeguard its territorial integrity.
Bipartisan Unity: In a political landscape often marred by division, the bipartisan endorsement of this bill underscores the gravity of the situation in Ukraine and the collective determination to provide meaningful support.

🇸🇪Sweden joins NATO
Posted a year agoToday, almost 2 years after applying, 🇸🇪Sweden finally officially joins NATO as the 32nd member of the alliance.
With the NATO takeover of 🇫🇮Finland and 🇸🇪Sweden now complete, that frees up all the tanks and troops that NATO used in their conquest of the Nordic countries to go take over 🇲🇩Moldova and force it to join NATO too... <sigh>
(ok, maybe I'm either being silly or making fun of the Kremlin narrative of NATO taking over countries)

Two (10) full years of 🇷🇺war🇺🇦
Posted a year agoYep two = 10, 'cause that's two in binary, uh, and also coincidently how many years it has been since Russia invaded/annexed Crimea in decimal.
It has now been two years since I woke up on the morning of February 24, 2022 and checked FA before I even looked at the news and saw several Journals by artists in Ukraine saying something like, "OMG we are being bombed!" I've been busy ever since trying to do what I can.
Here are some recent news articles about the war (uh, that's "special military operation" for all of the Russians who are watching me or somehow find this Journal):
[CNN did live updates on the Ukraine War daily up to 10/6/23, since then they've been erratic and infrequent, CNN didn't have live updates on 2/17/24 or 2/18/24, I think, but there have been a few lately]

It has now been two years since I woke up on the morning of February 24, 2022 and checked FA before I even looked at the news and saw several Journals by artists in Ukraine saying something like, "OMG we are being bombed!" I've been busy ever since trying to do what I can.
Many Ukrainian FA members and artists made FA Journals about their experiences during and after the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24-February-2022
I made a list of links here: https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/10810409/ , please consider reading a few of them.

Attack on Lysychansk kills ~28 people at bakery
Posted a year agoI apologize for all of the Journals about civilian casualty events in the Russia-Ukraine war special military operations (aka war), but since I've already mentioned several I wanted to at least mention the latest report: (at the time I originally created this Journal the reporting on the event was mostly or entirely based on information/statements from Russian sources, since the mostly depopulated city of Lysychansk is currently under Russian control; however more information and details have emerged in the following days)
<I am trying to update this Journal as new information is reported, it is interesting to watch the story evolve over time. Latest update: 06 Feb 2024>
"Russian sources claimed on February 3 that Ukrainian forces conducted a HIMARS strike against a bakery in occupied Lysychansk, Luhansk Oblast." -- from ISW (a one sentence mention in their 3 Feb 2024 report)
"Russia says at least 28 people have been killed after Ukrainian forces shelled a bakery in the city of Lysychansk in the occupied eastern region of Luhansk," -- from Al Jazera (4 Feb 2024)
"Reuters was unable to independently verify the date of the footage or any other details of the report coming out of an area Russia annexed in July 2022 after months of heavy fighting." -- from Reuters (2024-02-03)
"Kyiv has not commented, but Ukrainian military bloggers have since claimed that "collaborators" and Russian officials were in the building at the time... Neither the death toll nor any other claims by either Russia or Ukraine have been verified by the BBC. Lysychansk, which is in the eastern Luhansk region, was captured by Russia in July 2022." -- from BBC (5 Feb 2024)
"A top Russian official was killed in a strike by Ukraine at a bakery in the Russian-occupied city of Lysychansk in Ukraine's Luhansk region, officials announced on Monday. Alexey Poteleshchenko was the Kremlin-installed minister of emergency situations in the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic [LPR] in Ukraine's Donbas region. He died in the attack on Saturday, Russian state-run news agencies RIA Novosti and Tass reported, citing sources. Poteleshchenko's death was later confirmed by the Kremlin-installed head of the self-proclaimed region, Leonid Pasechnik. "He was a courageous man with an iron character and huge fortitude. He defended the Luhansk People's Republic in the ranks of the People's Militia, then worked in the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the LPR," Pasechnik wrote on his Telegram channel on Monday. "We will definitely take revenge on the enemy for his death and for the deaths of all those who became victims of the inhumane shelling of Lysychansk," he said. Pasechnik said he personally knew Poteleshchenko "as a high-class professional." He extended his condolences to his family and friends. Citing representatives of Russia's Investigative Committee, Russian publication RTVI reported that the strike was likely carried out by Ukraine using a U.S.-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). Newsweek couldn't independently verify if the weapons were used in the attack." -- from Newsweek (Feb 05, 2024)
"A Ukrainian strike on a bakery in the occupied eastern Ukrainian city of Lysychansk over the weekend killed three officials, Russian-installed representatives said Monday. The Kremlin has blasted the attack that killed at least 28 people as a “monstrous terrorist act.” On Monday, authorities in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region said a local government minister and two deputies were among those killed. “During the brutal shelling of the bakery in Lysychansk, the emergency situations minister of the Luhansk People's Republic, Colonel Alexey Poteleshchenko, was killed,” the Moscow-appointed head of the region Leonid Pasechnik said in a post on the Telegram messaging app. Luhansk is one of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow claims to have annexed since invading the country nearly two years ago. Poteleshchenko fought in militia units for pro-Russian separatists against Ukraine before being appointed to the government post, Pasechnik said. Two municipal deputies were also killed in the attack, Mayor Eduard Sakhnenko said in a post on social media... Kremlin-backed officials in occupied Ukraine said 18 men, nine women and one child died when Ukrainian forces struck the building on Saturday." -- The Moscow Times (05 Feb 2024)
"A recent Ukrainian HIMARS strike on occupied Lysychansk, Luhansk Oblast, killed at least one significant Russian occupation official. Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR) Head Leonid Pasechnik stated on February 5 that a February 3 Ukrainian HIMARS strike killed LNR Emergency Situations Minister Colonel Alexei Poteleshchenko, and other occupation officials claimed that the strike killed 28 people.[38] Some Russian sources claimed that many of the 28 killed were occupation officials, public prosecutors, and law enforcement officers who had gathered for a celebration.[39] ISW is unable to verify this claim, however." -- from ISW (5 Feb 2024 report)
"Russia has admitted that one of its senior occupation officials, Alexey Poteleshchenko, was among those killed when a supposed bakery in Russian-held Lysychansk was bombed. The Kremlin had previously characterised the casualties as civilians. Russian state-run news agencies RIA Novosti and Tass have now reported that Poteleshchenko was a former pro-Russian militiaman who, at the time of his death, was minister of emergency situations in the self-proclaimed, Russian-controlled Luhansk People’s Republic." -- The Guardian (6 Feb 2024)

I think it says something important about international/western media that it was willing to write/publish stories about the attack on the bakery in Lysychansk shortly after it happened based mostly on just the public statements from Russian officials -- the international news does not just ignore things that happen in the "occupied regions of Ukraine" that are still internationally recognized as Ukraine but have been annexed by Russia. For anyone who thinks that Voice Of America (VOA) is just USA propaganda, I suggest comparing their level-headed and non-speculative reporting of the event on 3 Feb 2024 and 5 Feb 2024 with some of the articles in the 'less objective' section below.
I'm going to avoid assigning blame or using words like 'war crime' until there is more information from reliable sources, since Russia conducts a lot of "information operations" and that unfortunately tends to make people suspicious about any reports that come only from Russian sources without independent verification (and Russia isn't especially friendly to independent journalists/reporters). When events like this first appear in the news there are always people who will say things like it was "obviously the other side" or a false flag operation or an errant air defense missile or pictures/video from a different time/place, but it may be a long time before we know what really happened at that bakery (a restaurant named Adriatic) in Lysychansk, if we ever do. However, unless the entire event was faked it does seem likely that over two dozen people in Lysychansk, some of whom were likely bakery/restaurant employees, died as a result of a war (or "special military operation", if you prefer) that has brought suffering and death to tens of thousands of civilians in Ukraine and even some in Russia.

Attack on Donetsk kills 27 people
Posted a year agoI mentioned some of the recent large scale missile/drone attacks on Ukraine and Russia in Journals a few weeks ago so I thought it would be fair to mention today's news of a lot of civilian casualties in the city of Donetsk (internationally recognized as Ukraine, claimed and currently controlled by Russia) where according to the local officials at least 27 people were killed and 25 wounded. Large-scale drone attack on Ukraine

Today's news said that Ukraine got to 'celebrate' the New Year with the largest Russian drone attack on Ukraine so far, a record 90 Shahed-type drones (I'm not sure if the 90 was in one day or just since the large-scale Russian missile attack on Ukraine on 30-December-2023). I will try to write a better summary (in a while). Also, according to the Associated Press, "four people were killed and 13 more wounded following Ukrainian shelling on Russian-occupied areas of Donetsk, according to the region’s Kremlin-installed leader, Denis Pushilin. Russian state media reported that a journalist was among the victims, but provided no further details." I hope all the FA members in the territory internationally recognized as Ukraine are all ok and did not lose any family or friends to this latest bombardment.

Here are the relevant paragraphs from the top of the Tuesday ISW report (for anyone who has difficulty accessing it directly):
Russian forces conducted another massive series of drone and missile strikes against deep rear areas in Ukraine between December 31 and January 2, one of which used a strike package similar to that used on December 29, and to which Ukrainian forces appear to be adapting. Ukrainian military officials stated that overnight on December 31 to January 1 Russian forces launched 90 Shahed-136/131 drones from Cape Chauda and Balaklava (occupied Crimea); Kursk Oblast; and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Krasnodar Krai and that Ukrainian forces shot down 87 of the drones.[8] Ukrainian officials stated that Russian forces also launched four S-300 missiles, three Kh-31P missiles, and one Kh-59 missile from occupied Kherson and Zaporizhia oblasts on January 1. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that later in the afternoon on January 1, Russian forces later launched an additional 10 Shahed drones and one Kh-59 missile, and that Ukrainian forces shot down nine of the drones and the missile.[9] Ukrainian officials stated that the Russian strikes damaged a museum and part of the Lviv National Agrarian University in Lviv City and residential buildings in Odesa City and Esma, Sumy Oblast.[10] The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) claimed that the Russian strikes on December 31 targeted unspecified Ukrainian airfields, although ISW has not yet been able to confirm strikes against Ukrainian airfield infrastructure.[11] Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed on January 1 that Russian strikes on January 2 would target military infrastructure in Ukraine like the strikes on January 1.[12]
Russian forces then conducted another massive series of missile and drone strikes overnight on January 1-2 and during the day on January 2. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched 35 Shahed drones; 10 Kh-47 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles; 70 Kh-101/555/55 missiles; 12 Iskander-M, S-300, and S-400 ballistic missiles; four Kh-31P anti-radar missiles; and three Kalibr missiles at Ukraine on the night of January 1-2 and the morning of January 2 and that Ukrainian forces shot down 59 of the Kh-101/555/55 missiles and all of the drones, Kinzhal missiles, and Kalibr missiles.[13] Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief General Valerii Zaluzhnyi stated on January 2 that Ukrainian forces shot down a record number of 10 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles with Western-provided Patriot systems.[14] Ukrainian officials stated that the Russian strikes caused damage in Kyiv and Kharkiv cities.[15] The Russian MoD claimed that the Russian strikes targeted Ukrainian weapons storage sites and defense industrial base (DIB) enterprises, including those that produce missiles and drones and repair military equipment in Kyiv City and its suburbs, and Zaluzhnyi confirmed that there were hits to civilian, critical, and military infrastructure.[16]

<quick update, 2-January-2024>
It just keeps going... Kyiv and Kharkiv in Ukraine got hit by Russian missile again, reportedly about 100 missiles of various types including 10 of the expensive high-tech hypersonic ones. I read that 5 Ukrainian civilians died and around 100 were wounded:

Large-scale missile attack on Russia
Posted a year agoAfter yesterday's massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine that killed at least 39 civilians and wounded more than 150, the news this morning carried reports of more drone & missile attacks on Ukraine as well as stories about multiple explosions across the Belgorod and Bryansk regions of Russia that border Ukraine which have reportedly killed about a dozen civilians, wounded more than 100, and done damage to things like apartments and automobiles. While there have been civilian deaths inside the territory that is internationally recognized as Russia previously during this "special military operation" (aka war) and I even wrote a Journal about the first civilian death inside of Russia that I read about back on 11 May 2022, the death and destruction inside of (internationally recognized) Russia has tended to be few and far between compared to the scale of civilian deaths and destruction inside of Ukraine, including far far behind the 'front lines'. I hope all the FA members in both Ukraine -and- Russia are all ok today and did not lose any family or friends to this latest bombardment.
Since I made a FA Journal about the explosions and civilian deaths in Ukraine yesterday, I would be remiss to not mention the explosions and deaths in Russia today (Saturday, 30 December 2023), which appears to be the largest amount of civilian casualties inside of Russia in a single day so far (even though they are less than what Ukraine suffered yesterday and a tiny fraction of the total that has been inflicted on Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure in the nearly two years since February 2022).

Ukrainian forces reportedly conducted a large series of strikes against targets in Russia on the night of December 29 to 30 and on December 30. Ukrainian security sources told Western and Ukrainian media that Ukrainian forces launched more than 70 drones on the night of December 29 to 30 at Russian military infrastructure and defense industrial facilities near Moscow, Belgorod, Tula, Tver, and Bryansk cities.[1] The Ukrainian security sources reportedly characterized these strikes as a response to the Russian strikes on December 29, which was the largest series of drone and missile strikes against Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion.[2] The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) claimed that Russian forces intercepted 32 Ukrainian drones in Bryansk, Orel, Kursk, and Moscow oblasts on the night of December 29 to 30.[3] The discrepancy between these Russian and Ukrainian figures may suggest that Ukrainian forces struck many of their intended targets, as Ukrainian security sources suggested to Western and Ukrainian media.[4] Ukrainian forces reportedly struck the Kreminy El Plant in Bryansk City, which is Russia’s second largest producer of microelectronics, 90 percent of whose manufactured products are reportedly components of Russian military equipment and systems.[5] Geolocated footage published on December 30 shows explosions over Bryansk City.[6] The Russian MoD stated that Russian air defenses shot down 12 Ukrainian MLRS rockets in Belgorod Oblast on December 29 and several more Ukrainian MLRS rockets near Belgorod City during the day on December 30.[7] Ukrainian security sources reportedly told Western and Ukrainian media that the Ukrainian strikes on December 30 targeted Russian military targets near Belgorod City.[8]

I am going to enable Comments, but I won't tolerate any hatred that is based solely on someone's ethnicity or what country they happened to be born in or currently reside in. Nor will I tolerate any comments about "deserving it" (in either direction); in my opinion the injury or death of random civilians is bad no matter where they are located or the specific details of how the injuries and deaths were caused. Other people are entitled to their own opinions about random civilian casualties, but I request that people with different opinions please keep those opinions to their own FA Journals.

Large-scale missile attack on Ukraine
Posted a year agoThere was a very large scale Russian military missile attack on Ukraine today (yesterday for some people). Apparently this is the biggest missile bombardment of the war so far; at ~122 missiles (plus more drones) this is bigger than the previous biggest assault in November 2022 when the Russian military launched 96 missiles at Ukraine. I saw the attacks and injury/death toll in the news this morning and it is now up to over 150 civilians injured and at least 31 killed. I hope the FA members in Ukraine are all ok and did not lose any family or friends to this latest bombardment.
