Hurricane failed to squish me, just stole my power. again
Posted 13 years agoI have power and internet at work, none at home. again. Less stuff seems to be down than we had down with Irena and Albert last year. Everything fell down then so we were running out of trees that could fall over. We do have two LARGE trees down in the yard. Both are not blocking anything, so can be cut up at leisure. The larger one (2' diameter) missed the neighbor's swing set by about 6".
We STILL have some uncut wood from Albert at Halloween last year because we don't own a saw big enough to cut through two 4' diameter trees. I HAVE LOTS OF FIREWOOD.
Now since less stuff has fallen over this time, hopefully this means it takes them less time to restore power to the house. Irene was 7 days, Albert was 8.

PICK UP AT FUFRIGHT: Free child size dinosuit!
Posted 13 years agoCleaning out attic, found itty bitty dinosaur suit a neighbor made me ages ago. if you’re going to FurFright, it is FREE TO A GOOD HOME. I very much enjoyed stomping around being a dinosaur for Halloween (and months afterward...) so would like some kid to have same fun. drop me a note if you would like it.
CHILD SIZE. was built as pajama style bodysuit for active kid, so doesn’t have a true waist. so far as I can tell its 30” waist. (it was designed baggy). Inseam on legs, 16”. Sleeves 12”. Baggy in legs and arms so it could be worn over regular clothes.
PICTURE HERE: http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m.....2yiro1_500.jpg
The tail is 42” and is sewed direct to body suit. There’s a worn spot on bottom of tail that’s been sewn shut.
Instead of a full head it has an attached hood with dino spikes on back. Face is not covered. (was intended as Halloween costume, so had no face covering to make sure I could see clearly while crossing street!) so would be worn with facepaint.
Comes with hand and footpaws. Footpaws go over regular shoes. Handpaws are mitten style, unfitted.
Done with plain fabric, I’m pretty sure cotton or cotton blend.
Front closure with a hidden zipper and has a throat closure with hooks, so kid can get in and out by themself.
Paws and hood portion are lined, the body suit is not.
Has been freshly laundered. MACHINE WASHABLE! Since it was kids outfit, has some wear and stains where the tail drags on ground and some stains along bottom edge of footpaws also from being worn outdoors. Doesn't look brand new, but will probably withstand more wear and play than the disposable costumes available from Target and Walmart.
If you’re going to FurFright and you kid would like their own fursuit, drop me a note and it is all yours!
DROP ME A NOTE BY 9PM EST THURSDAY IF YOU WANT THIS.

How to get the best price on textbooks
Posted 13 years agoI’m a book dealer by trade and end up buying a LOT of textbooks for people at this time of year. They can take a huge bite our of your budget, so you want to shop around. Here’s how to get the best deals.
Where to look:
http://www.gettextbooks.com/ (best for textbooks, includes rentals!)
http://used.addall.com/ (best for non-textbook required reading)
http://www.vialibri.net/ (for foreign language and non-US sources)
Google Alerts (see below)
All these return results from multiple sites in a single search.
How to search
START with the ISBN of the book to get all the vital data about edition, exact spelling of the author’s names, data of publication, and whether it has any auxillary materials, and both the ISBN-10 and ISBN-13.
Hey wait, my search for the ISBN turned up no results! —This probably means it’s a custom edition or custom bundle produced JUST for your school. If its a custom edition, you’ll have to buy it from the campus bookstore (if its from Penguin and labelled custom or your own university’s press, this is most likely a custom edition) If its a bundle with a textbook with study guide/cd/software bundle, you may be able to buy the components individually. use the data you have from the booklist to find.
Now you can just copy paste the data, run a second search in another tab with the OTHER ISBN. This may bring up some different results. In a third tab, a search with the book title, the author’s last name, and narrow it with publication date. This will bring up international editions that use the same text, have a different ISBN.
What is an international edition? SAME book as you have in the US… its just a paperback version on lower quality paper stock. It may have some slight differences in pagination. (so chapter 20 starts on page 346 not 345 ) and it has an angry warning on the front saying “Only for sale in Malaysia!” They’re perfectly legal to buy, they just aren’t OK to import for resale. A new international edition shipped from Malaysia or the Philippines (the most frequent sources) is often cheaper than a USED US copy. I order them all the time for people and they sometimes arrive faster than ones shipped from the far cost of the US!
What about renting?
Renting is awesome. Just pay attention to when you have to return it! Renting is a particularly good option if you have to move out at the end of the school year. You have an immediate “home” for a big chunk of stuff.
Caveat: god knows what condition the book will be in when you get it and be wary if you NEED auxilary material.
What if I need supplementary material?
Do you actually NEED that material? many books COME with this material, but you won’t actually need it, check with your professor. Books that are supposed to have the supplementary material and don’t are often available very cheap.
Crap I DO need the supplementary material. do I have to buy new?
Sadly, you often do if its software that comes with a key. Most are only good for one use. HOWEVER… the software manufacturer is often different than the publisher. You may be able to buy the software (and key) direct from the software manufacturer’s website and then buy a used book. Used books with a used key are often really cheap, so doing it this way may be WAY cheaper than buying the bundle.
This is still so expensive! what else can I do?
For many courses you can get away with using one (or even two!) editions back! You are most likely to able to do this with humanities courses. Introductory sciences are also probably okay. The citric acid cycle did not change between editions! The higher the course level, the less likely you are going to be able to do that. You may be completely SOL in some fields like computer science, political science, or law because of the constant and VERY IMPORTANT changes to the field. Ask your professor. Most are sympathetic and will be honest with you about it. This can often be a $100 difference between the current edition and the previous one!
The OTHER thing you can do is play vulture. Prices can fluctuate wildly. Many book dealers use automatic pricing software… which can sometimes go completely awry, like where this textbook on flies spiralled up to $23 MILLION . Those same autopricing programs can drive DOWN prices. Use Google Alerts with the ISBN of the book you need. Have it send a report once a day. Be prepared to pounce on mislisted items!
What about just regular books? I’ve got 10 different non-textbooks I need for a literature class!
Those can nickel and dime you to death. First off, determine if you need THAT edition. You probably don’t. If you’re reading classic literature, most editions are pretty much the same. If you are REQUIRED to read a specific essay included with the book, you may need to get that edition. If it’s a specific translation, again, you may need that edition. It that’s NOT true, buy whatever edition you want! Or check out Google Books, Project Gutenberg, and even Amazon have have free ebooks, largely classics. (you don’t need a fancy e-reader to read them.)
Also check your local used bookstore. Check the one at HOME before you leave for school because the one in your home town will have different stock than the one in college town. If you’ve got 100 students that all need that book… well, the used bookstore in college town runs out fast. But if you’re the only one that needs it at home… supply and demand! You’ll get it for a much better price, often lower than you would online!

Curse of Set now available for the Rage CCG!
Posted 13 years agoLong ago, in the time of the pharaohs, Garou and Fera made war upon the vampires that infested Egypt. The war raged on and on until the dark god Set laid a curse upon the Silent Striders, driving them out of Egypt. No Silent Strider could sleep within the bounds of Egypt without suffering terrible nightmares. They were driven from their homeland, forced to become wanderers, always longing for home but never able to return.
The vampires turned then to the Fera. The Bubasti could not leave their homeland due to a mystic connection with the land, so suffered an even worse fate than the Silent Striders. The vampires captured the kinfolk of the Bubasti and made them their slaves. Those they could not capture, they killed. The Bubasti were left to slowly waste away, cut off from their feline kin… or to mate with the now Wyrm tainted kin and slowly be corrupted from within.
Now the Apocalypse approaches. Set’s childer wake from their slumber and raise cults to praise the Dark God. The Striders see nightmares even when awake, so return to retake their homeland. The Bubasti see the rise of Hellcats and make a last ditch effort to keep from joining them in the belly of the Wyrm.
Will the first battle of the Apocalypse take place in Egypt? Or will the Garou and fera be able to work together to stave off their ancient foes just a little longer?

artists wanted for next Rage set
Posted 13 years agoI'm currently working on getting the art for the twelfth Rage set, Curse of Set, together. Generally about 2/3 of any given set is stock art that's used with the artist's written permission to use art in the set. (a very limited creative commons license basically) About 1/3 will be new stuff done by fans. You can see a full listing of all the artists I've worked with on these, here.
http://www.rainydaypaperback.com/ho...../artlinks.html
Since this is fan based, we can not offer you cash compensation. We can however offer you advertising space for commissions, selling originals or prints of the work, your CafePress, Zazzle, Artfire, Wepay or Etsy shop, or to promote your personal webpage, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook fan page, etc.
This is the twelfth set we have worked on. The first set was featured in a short article in Inquest Gamer #106. You can listen to a podcast about the last set (Hellcats) at Darker Days: http://darkerdays2.podbean.com/2011.....io-episode-27/ or the read a recent interview for Bring Your A Game: http://bringyouragamemagazine.blogs.....age-forum.html We also cross-promote new releases on about a dozen web sites, Twitter, and Facebook.
You keep title to your artwork. All cards carry the artist’s name and copyright info. We release the cards in two versions. One is as a printable PDF, so images can't be altered or easily swapped around. The PDF would be free for people to download and print out. They may not sell it.
The last page of the PDF download would have contact info for the various artists (yourself included). You can put info for ordering a print of the artwork, commissioning you, or the address for your website.
The second version is as a download for an online player (Lackey) that allows you to play Rage across the internet. All images display full copyright info. The player is free to use.
You would also get the same information placed on the webpage the PDF would be downloaded from. We can easily leave off your e-mail contact so you won’t be spammed, and simply say “see the PDF for full contact information.” We usually include the whole artist listing or a link to the artist listing on all press releases depending on the format of the site we’re sending the information to.
You'll get a final proof of the card to look at before it goes into the PDF so you can give a final yes or no to whether you want to be associated with the project. If at some later point after its released you decide you don't want to be involved anymore, you can contact me and request your artwork be removed. It will be removed from the PDF and from both online players. I can't guarantee all existing printed copies would be destroyed, but there'd be no new ones made.
Here’s some examples of what some of the cards look like in the PDF

OKAY, WALL OF EXPLANATORY TEXT OVER, WTF DO I WANT?
I want permission to use YOUR art! (or for you to draw stuff, but stock art is awesome too)
Check the spreadsheet here of missing pieces. got something that matches the description of what we're looking for? copy-pasta a link into the unclaimed sport and send me an e-mail. Because of the odd shapes and sizes involved, sometimes what looks great on screen looks like a hot mess once plated, so I want contact info so I can send you a proof to look at.
the ones marked "unclaimed" are the ones were looking for:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/.....VTkhrjNyc/edit
If you don't want to look through the listing but would be open to having your art used that way, you can also point me at your gallery and I'll see if anything matches.
WHAT IF I WANT TO DRAW STUFF CUSTOM!?!
I love you.
Please only take ONE card. Wipe out the spot that says "unclaimed" and put your name there. If you finish your first card before the due date, you can take a second one. You must have talked to me via e-mail before you can be confirmed for a piece. (this is so I can confirm I have correct email to send you card proofs, make sure your copyright is correctly displayed, etc) Please note that most pieces marked character are actually TWO pieces. (they're a different color on the spreadsheet) You can take these as your assignment, However, you choose a doublesided character, you are agreeing to do both pieces. (example of what the character look like with their normal side and their wereside: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/188470/rage )
If you need more details on a piece, want a sample card plate to look at, need reference material, or are done and need to send it in, get ahold of me at fenris_lorsrai***@***yahoo.com (take out the *s. Please put Rage in the title of your email so I can spot it quickly. I usually don't answer mail on Sunday afternoon or on Monday. That's my weekend)
Due Date: FRIDAY MAY 11th.
There's some wiggle room with the date, so long as you tell me beforehand you need more time and how much time you need.
If you claim something and then think you won't finish on time, tell me sooner rather than later! Then we can reassign the piece!
ART SIZES!
Character 6CM tall X 5.2CM wide
Creature 5X5 CM
Standard 4CM tall X 5CM wide
Tall 7.2CM Tall X 2.4 wide
Landscape 2.4CM tall X 7.2CM wide
I expect you to work larger than this. Just keep the ratios. 2-3 times size is good for most mediums. Watercolor should be 2X or less. If you work really blocky or are speedpainting, you can work at more than 3X with some mediums.
KEEP IN MIND.... almost all the character require TWO pieces of art to be completed. So if you pick a character you must do both halves!

Rage CCG stuff- or why haven't you been posting art?
Posted 14 years agoI'vebeen tied up doing the art direction for the next Rage set so have not been posting much here. I have a bunch of art that will appear in the set, but haven't had a chance to actually scan it and upload it as of yet. I'm doing all the layouts for Hellcats, so turning around redlines and artist proofs back to people working on the set has been higher priority right now. Once the last of those are done, all the art I did for the set will appear.
I've also done some collaboration pieces with another artist for Hellcats. He does the linework and inking (which I SUCK at, I can't ink my way out of a paper bag) and I do the coloring of the image (a task he finds tedious) So far seems to be going well, those pieces will also get posted shortly. You can check out first of the collabs here:

You can get more info on the upcoming Hellcats set for Rage here:

If you answer, you'll have to do the same in your journal, putting me on the first place, completing the list with 9 other people. The idea of this is not to get a free feature, it is to spread art around for everyone.
