Shouting Into The Void - On Social Media
Posted 2 years agoA journal that isn't a show post? Well, this is kinda related.
I used to be on Twitter, but left in 2017 because a) it was already becoming a dumpster fire and b) I felt that my style of posting was getting swamped in the noise of algorithms and advertisements. I don't post hundreds of times of day, I don't give hot takes and can't stand "live reactions", so the bots decided I'm not interesting. The events that have happened since have not changed my mind.
I looked into Reddit and that wasn't a much better hive of scum and villainy. Besides, trying to find a community for me, is hard. I'm a furry, but I really don't understand or make connections to this thing called "community". So I tend to stand on the sidelines around here on FA. But this seems to be true wherever I go; I do some photography and music on an art site, but I'm not really an artist. My tastes in music is a strange amalgam that doesn't translate into an audience, or even a place of find like minded people.
A couple of acquaintances started promoting their Mastodon accounts after the latest attempts by Elmo to run Twitter into the ground, so I spent some time looking through the various instances, with the idea of perhaps using that to promote my Mixcloud shows there to a more open crowd. There are some nice features; going back to chronological timelines, smaller groups that have rules against hate speech. And there is no shortage of furry, LGBTQ+ and music instances.
But, again I look at all them, and none of them seem to fit. The furry servers have the same problem as FA for me; visual art focused. I am LG-whatever, but that's never been my main focus, so that feels like a non-starter. Same goes for the neurodiverse instances. General art servers are again slanted towards visual art, or more broadly, creative creation. There are music servers, but they are either focused on musicians, typical club DJs or a single musical genre. One that seemed close from the description had rules about being on or off-topic which felt restrictive. Which leaves the generic servers, which feels like the same problems I had with Twitter in the first place; lost in the crowd as other people shout louder and more frequently.
Honestly, I'm not sure what I'd do with Mastodon if I had it, beyond announcing shows to the void. I would like to think I could post photographs and art commissions, not unlike I do here, perhaps random thoughts. But I don't know if anything I do has an audience. Or if that is a habit that is best left in the past.

They Won't Miss Me When I'm Gone
Posted 6 years agoWhenever I create, I am always disappointed by the general reaction I get. "Meh." Regardless of what I do, I might get a comment of two, but largely, it's a big old silence. It might be the depression talking, but I think I figured out the source. I have a difficult time connecting emotionally with people. This, in turn, is reflected in my work, which is often only surfaces or things that only I found amusing, which in reality is either not that good or profound.
Growing up, "being on the spectrum" was not a thing. Autism was reserved for only those severely affected; non-verbal or barely verbal, but able to do amazing recall in the right situation. However, I've long wondered if perhaps I am touched to some degree. Or maybe I'm just socially awkward. Regardless, I've never had lot of friends, and the few that I had, I often felt like the relationship was lopsided; I never really felt like I had a "best friend" growing up, the sort of mutual bond where two people hang out all the time. I still feel easily intimidated and about four seconds from being mocked because I'm not on the same page as everyone else unless I hide behind a mask.
As an adult, I still feel like I don't experience the same world as everyone else. I don't understand the concept of spirituality. I have difficulty reading social cues. And I'm aggressively neutral to most people. I know when I've tried to perform, I have no idea how to read the crowd, because I'm so focused on doing the thing; the audience hardly exists. And this is what makes my writing, musical collages, my videos for the most part– meh. I cannot connect because I don't know how.
I've been told that I come off as aloof, but the truth of the matter, when I'm with a group of people, I'm simultaneously trying to be not noticed and hoping that I can find one person I can connect with. I usually fail at the latter. Often I feel like an interloper or just tolerated, and if I were to withdraw quietly from the group, no one would notice... or care. Most of the time, I'm right, or it just feels that way; no comments, no inquires.
So, I put stuff out there occasionally because I have the compulsion to create. It's not really for the praise– something I get extremely rarely, if at all– but for the act of creativity. But it's hard to sustain because I am all about surfaces. I don't really believe in a soul, so I'm not sure if it's right to call it "soulless", but it is plagued by mediocrity. That's the best that I got.

You Pups Get Off My Lawn!
Posted 6 years agoI've come to the realization as I get older, I'm going be a curmudgeon. I do tend to get set in my ways, and I'm often honestly confused when something gets changed. Take for example the Shortcuts app included with iOS 13. I have no idea what it is useful for, and sure as hell will never use a voice assistant (they creep me out). I'm sort of the inverse of Scotty from Star Trek IV. So my first inclination is to complain and fume– why did they include this useless thing? I'll post pointless rants to the internet!

The Most Boring Furry In The World
Posted 6 years agoI look around at the typical furry in the fandom, and come to the conclusion I'm the one of the most vanilla furries out there. Sure, I'm bi and in a poly relationship, but that's about it. Never colored my hair; no piercings anywhere or tattoos. Won't wear a fursuit, or even ears/tail. Have never worn bondage gear or any fancy clothes. Don't smoke or take drugs; a single serving of alcohol is enough.
I'm also getting bored of conventions. I stopped going to pony cons because I had seen everyone I wanted, and you can only here the same stories from them so many times. Furry cons took a little longer, but the novelty has run out; now it's just a chore. Maybe because I'm getting old– I think I passed the threshold to be a greymuzzle in this fandom a decade ago. But I look at what the typical convention has to offer, either in the dealer's room or as part of the programming, and it's all been done.
Don't get me wrong; there's some darn fine artists, musicians and writers out there that i will continue to enjoy and support. This is not an overly dramatic "I'm leaving the fandom!" post. But I feel out of step and frustrated by those that go to cons, and that has come to outweigh the small bit of enjoyment that I get. Better to focus on what I enjoy, and leave the rest behind.

Thoughts on furry fandom, art, writers and professionalism
Posted 8 years agoDepending on which bus I take, I go by a cluster of art galleries. It was suggested by someone a few months ago– and I think it's an interesting idea– that a group of furry artists could put on an art show in one of these gallery spaces. There are plenty of very talented artists who consistently do fantastic work, and it's not necessary porn.
Yet, because they work in furry, their work isn't seen much outside of the fandom. Sure, there's been a few artists that have gone on to jobs in animation, comic or other professional art jobs. But often their furry work is marginalized.
One of the things mentioned by professional writers in regards to furry writers is that while writers can get published in fandom press, writers can only improve if they can get published in more mainstream places. This, in turn, will raise the level of furry writers. The same principle applies to the already very talented artists.
But I do see a curious resistance to this idea to leave the high walls of the fandom. Sometimes, it's from the creators themselves, but often it's from the rank and file. There is this notion that artists should make money from their skills, but just for the sake of the art. Or that somehow becoming a professional makes one no longer part of the fandom.
The way I see it, furry fandom has a wide range of very creative people, and it's worth promoting that creativity to the wider world. That is a positive in itself, but it also raises the level of the work being created to even higher levels. I have never understood this attitude that just because something is popular it is no longer good or the creator somehow "sold out." Selling out only occurs when the work is deliberately cheapened to appeal to the mass appeal. That'll happen some of the time, but not all of the time. Just because it might happen shouldn't prevent people to striving to get better.

That "writer" tag is all legit
Posted 10 years agoFirst purpose: to clear off that VF meme
Second purpose: I've been accepted to have one of my stories in this year's
rainfurrest general anthology. Along with last year's VF con book, that makes two published stories (without pay), which is the criteria to get into the Furry Writers Guild. This makes me officially... a writer.

Posted 11 years agoI know I don't post very often, so forgive this unexpected intrusion into your piles of follows.
But you see, I have this podcast, called Wilford's Mixtape, that I've been doing for about a year now, and kinda like have a few more people listening. This particular podcast is basically an excuse for me to put together a bunch of songs around a particular theme. I've done episodes of animal songs; I've done a series of episodes tracing the history of Japanese popular music since World War II. So, it's a little bit of everything. So listen, won't you? The helpful RSS feed which works just peachy with RSS and iTunes renderers is below.

And you want to give me feedback, or even just a note that you've gave it a listen, that'd be welcome to.

More rants
Posted 12 years agoAgain placing things that won't be seen by anyone just to get them out of my head:
I can understand why there are different art sites. They serve different needs.
But when I hear an artist say "I've joined such and such site", my reaction is no. I'm not a joiner by nature – I reluctantly joined FA, after all- but once I join a particular site, that's it. I have an account on SoFurry only because I thought it would show me more (it didn't), and never looked further than that. I haven't looked at it for months. InkBunny, DeviantArt, Weasly, et al. are no go. I'm sure there are plenty of talented artists there, but since I have a hard enough time keeping up with just the few I watch on FA, why add others sites?
Even worse are the *chans: Reddit, Something Awful, 4chan, etc. are the comments section of YouTube, without content. They are just distasteful, spiteful, moral-free cesspools of hate. There is a reason I have very nice add-ons for my browser to block ads and comments (Clea.nr Videos and ShutUp for Safari). If I applied these to the *chans, it should rightly block the entire site.

Blasphemous Rumors
Posted 12 years agoThis has been on my mind for a while, so why not put in place no one will see it?
This is about a bit of furry blasphemy: I think fursuiters get far too much attention in the fandom. Every con caters to their needs and has events specifically for them. Anytime there is any sort of report on furry outside the fandom, it's always the fursuiters that get all the attention, because they are biggest, most obvious "freaks" that make for good photo ops; the equivalent to cosplayers at any other fandom event, but with less copyright infringing.
Let me be clear about two things: there is no way in hell that I would even get into a fursuit, and even being around them is often uncomfortable for me. It's the same reason I find clowns scary. What is this unnatural thing and why does it think it's funny? Even masks and costumes are a source of being uncomfortable.
On the other paw, I have nothing against the makers of fursuits. There are a lot of talented people that make them and it's another artistic skill, much like art, writing, or music. In fact, if furry fandom is about anything, it is a celebration of creative expression around the central theme of human-like animals. But far too often, the fursuiters steal that spotlight like leeches, as if they are be all and end all of the fandom. And while I think that furry is often too heavily weighted towards the visual, at least with those doing artwork and animation are doing so in the act of creativity. Once a fursuit is made, there is nothing creative left.

And while I think that furry is often too heavily weighted towards the visual, at least with those doing artwork and animation are doing so in the act of creativity. Once a fursuit is made, there is nothing creative left.

Only if I know you.

Don't expect much.

You're kidding, right?
Do you do trades?
See above.
What is your gender?
男
How old are you?
I've achieved Jack Benny levels (ask your parents, probably grandparents)
Can I touch you?
Again, only if I know you.
Can I buy you lots of drinks?
Well, seeing how I'm good after one, I'm a cheap date
Can I give you lots of money?
Or a fat-free yogurt; either is good.
Can I hug or snuggle with you?
...oh what the heck, why not?
How tall are you?
5'10" on a good day
You look pissed off out of suit can I come up to you?
That's because some idiot put me in a fursuit. What were they thinking?
Are you nice?
I'd like to think so.
Are you cliquey?
High school was a long time ago. But I do tend to stick with people I know. That's introversion, folks.
Can I stalk you?
You sick weirdo
Do you like parties?
Dunno. Never been to one.
If I see you, how should i get your attention?
Fandom name will usually work.
Are you fursuiting?
Very no.
Can I ask ya to dance with me during the dances?
Since that is very unlikely....
Can I buy breakfast, lunch, or dinner sometime?
Free food is always looked upon favorably
Can I take a picture of ya?
Why would you?
Can I steal ya away for *censored*?
If that comes up, I'd very surprised. But... yes, please.
Would ya like to get a commission done of ya?
That's an idea.
Wanna play some Xbox games?
I wouldn't be very good... but again, why not?
Wanna take a photo of me too if I'm suiting?
Maybe.
See you all at VancouFUR!!!

RF Con Meme... wait, what?
Posted 13 years agoMostly because I hadn't written anything here for a while... yeah, I'm doing Rainfurrest again.
Panels?:
There's a couple I'd like to check out (the How To DJ demo on Thursday night and the MLP meetup on Saturday are top of mind)
Where will you be?
Thursday night, a chunk of Friday, and most of the day Saturday
Where are you staying?
Commuting from my place north of Seattle
Traveling Plans?
See above.
Arrival/Departure Date:
See above.
Who will you be with?
I'll probably hang out again with
kturtle when I can, and run across people I recognize (since I dunno who all will be there >.< )
Hanging out with/meeting up with/saying hi to:
Hopefully, Kinky Turtle,
chipuni
jhelfrich and
rhari at the very least. Not sure if
tkdye will be there this year.
Suiting?
Heck no.
Parties?
Unlikely.
What is your gender?
Male
How old are you?
ひーみーつ
Are you taken? Are you looking for a 'mate'?
Yeah, I'm taken... I think.
Can I touch you?
Why would you want to?
Can I touch your friends?
Who writes these questions?
Can I talk about/do drugs in front of you?
HELL NO. One of the quickest ways to lose respect for you.
Can I invite you out for food/fun/etc?
Unlikely, but yeah, sure.
Can I come with you for food/fun/etc?
See above.
Can I take pictures with you?
Why would you want to?
Are you nice?
I think so... I'm just not very forthcoming sometimes.
Can I stalk you?
Again I ask who writes these?
Can I buy you lots of drinks?
Since I'm usually good with a single beer or glass of wine, that'd be futile.
Can I hug or snuggle you?
Only if I know you.
May I ask you for a Dance?
Since I won't be at a dance...
Can I talk to you?
Sure, but I might not be forthcoming unless you hit the right topic.
Can I give you stuff?
Free things. Why not?
Can I do naughty things to you?
Why would anyone would want to? (subject to at the moment reconsideration)
Planning to get commissions?
Perhaps.
How can I find you?
If you don't know what I look like, you would have a hard time to find me.
-
Wow, that was a bit more snarky than I was expecting.

Posted 14 years agoCongratulations for watching me. I know I'm not exactly the most prolific poster to FA, but as compensation for watching me anyway, I offer you some music:
http://wbwolf.livejournal.com/489383.html
Until Christmas, I'll putting up a selection of music that I've acquired through the year. This year has been a good year for me musically, so I figured I'd share. This week is part 1 of my 7" singles with music from Herb Alpert, Sandii & The Sunsetz, Kyu Sakamoto, Erasure, Plastics, Squeeze, Pizzicato Five, Duane Eddy, Lionel Hampton and more.
