A... Con Report?!
Posted 14 years agoYeah, I went to a con— RainFurrest 2011 which is local to me.
This was an unusual con for me, in that this was the first time I really felt like I was going specifically to hook up with people. The result was much more enjoyable than some of the other cons, where I felt a little lost.
I was able to get really nice prints from
dingbat,
kacey and Steve Martin (a Wilford print!). I also managed to get a ferret shot cup from Dingbat. I got my custom MLP badge from
mitti (as well as a print) and I was pleasantly surprised that she did my more complicated gramophone cutie mark. In addition, I picked up Heat Volume 7 from Sofawolf (with the story by
tgreyfox) and All The Newshounds Fit To Print by
tkdye.
Also got to talk to
nikonraccoon,
kturtle,
tkdye,
codyvfrost and
jhelfrich. Attended writing panels with Alan Dean Foster and
ravenwood. And of course, watching My Little Pony with a large group with muffins and cupcakes was a lot of fun.

I've got nothing.
Apropos to nothing
Posted 14 years agoI dunno which is more disturbing for me: a furry declaring they are a pot smoking Tea Party follower (one or the other, not both) or vore art.
Edit: Actually I did find something more disturbing: Finding out that Tron Guy went on America's Got Talent. I guess he likes public humiliation.
(and for the record, I used to know him personally but is now the one person in the world that I actively dislike.)

Posted 15 years agoA new commission of my vixen character Felina: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4668740/
Drawn by
starwonder She is taking extremely reasonable commissions right now (originally heard it from
tgreyfox), starting with pencil head shots at C$1.00, and going all the way up to full digital color. I'm really happy with this commission, and getting a color picture of Felina was really reasonable.
Get one today, and say where you get one, and she'll make me an icon. So, there's a little self-interest, too...

Heya, Toonsters!
Posted 15 years agoTom Ruegger reminds us that today is the 20th anniversary of the debut of Tiny Toon Adventures.
Well, that was pointless.

You can embed YouTube in FA now.
As some of you might not know, in addition to occasionally writing and making sound collages, I also make film mashups, mostly using public domain footage. This one, entitled "Decay", intercuts a home movie from the 1960s that was falling apart and Man Ray's 1923 film "La Retour A Raison". I then did all sorts of visual effects in iMovie 6: contrast, film speed, different filters, etc. The music is "Corona Radiata" by Nine Inch Nails (cc 2008) from The Slip.
More of my film stuff can be found at http://wbwolf.masemware.com .

100. What happens now?
Posted 15 years agoSo I wrote my porn story, and it has slowly topped 100 views; my third most popular story. What I find interesting is has been steadily getting views; my other two (both stories, oddly), got the majority of their views in the first couple days.
I do wonder: is this true of other FA members? That sexually explicit works (pictures first, then stories, and then music at the bottom) tend to have a steadier stream of views than G-rated works? Granted there are exceptions; an artist like
kacey is going to get lots of views, regardless what she posts, but what about the average viewer.
(Then again, I'm always a little surprised when I get a fav or a watch; I have so few...)
On a related note, anyone interested in a sequel? I've been toying with Maya with a female....

Posted 16 years agoThe FURRY MEME! stolen from a lot of people
*Are you a furry?
This is a loaded question. I've seen a few people say (on this website, no less) that they aren't. Personally, I feel that if you like and appreciate anthropomorphic art, then you are. And I do. But, do I believe I'm an animal trapped in a human body? No, I don't go for that whole lifestyle thing.
*If you have a Spouse/SO - Is he/she a furry too?
Yes.
*How long have you been in the community?
Define "been in". How long have I've been aware of fandom and participated in it in some small way? Since 1994.
*How did you find furry?
It was kind of a confluence of events that led to me finding the fandom. I had long been interested in the notion of transformation and animals, particularly dragons. (My favorite ending for a D&D Choose Your Own Adventure book was when the spell backfired and you became a dragon.) But being shy and in the pre-Internet age, I had no idea what anyone else had similar interests.
Forward to 1993. I had gotten back into animation around 1989 (Disney Afternoon & Project A-ko to start), and I was really excited about Animaniacs. I was also going to college, and I had a physics professor rave about this thing called the "Internet" you could talk to people all around the world. So, somehow I found the Usenet groups, and eventually alt.tv.animaniacs. About the same time, I started going to a local comic store, to see if I could find some manga when I wandered back into the "adult" section and found an early copy of Genus. "Oh interesting...a comic book with animals doing sexual acts."
It was only later through Usenet and IRC did I find out there was an entire community devoted to this stuff. I remember embarrassedly looking at Doug Winger's Minerva pictures in the library. Yeah, I got exposed to the "hard" stuff pretty early on....
*What's your reason for furry (what interested you to get into the community)?
I like hanging out with my little subgroup of friends, and mostly for the art, man. I know I complain about how furry fandom tends to mostly visual (if you don't do art and/or fursuiting, you're invisible), but I can't deny it's pretty powerful.
*What's Furry to you?
When it combines animal and human characteristics, be it in comics, music, movies, or stories. "Furr" by Blitzen Trapper, Hyper Police and Redwall are all furry as far as I'm concerned. I will note that furry fandom, though, still remains the only fandom that is mostly inward facing; that is, it's not based off an outside source.
*If someone found out you're a furry and asked you about it how would you respond?
I'd emphasize that's it's about portraying human-like animals.
*What are your favorite aspects of our community?
Mostly I appreciate the talent that often goes on display in this community. I've made some pretty lastly friendships indirectly because of this fandom.
*Do you use any furry terms? (i.e. yiff, paws, murr?)
Mostly as a joke. Like I said, I'm not into this whole "lifestyle" thing.
*What do you wish furry was NOT associated with?
Some of the more extreme fetishes, like vore. That's just creepy. Cub porn/babyfur is also borderline distasteful, though lolita/shota in manga also makes me uncomfortable.
*How strongly do you feel about someone bashing the community as a whole?
I feel that they are trolls at worst and misguided at best. Disappointed, but not OMG!! Let's burn the infidels! crazy.
*How strongly do you feel about anyone bashing you yourself for your interest based on the media's aspect of what furry is?
See above. Though I tend to keep my furry interest pretty low key (professional necessity).
*We all know furries have alot of sexual aspects in this fandom, What's your opinion on it?
I'll find the stuff I like, and pass by the rest. Kinda like Vargas pinups, except with fur and tails.
Personal
*What is/are your fursona(s)?
Wilford B. Wolf (swiped from Animaniacs, if you didn't know), occasionally Felina J. Fox.
*Do you have any fetishes that pertain to the fandom?
None... specifically... >.> <.<
*If you could magically morph into your fursona would you?
No... I write about transformations a lot, but more as an exercise to explore the reaction to the change in others. I have no desire to transform myself.
*Do you believe you have a spirit animal?
Not really.
*What other fanbases/groups are you a part of?
MST3k, Homestar Runner, anime/manga... those are the ones I feel the strongest to.
*Anthro/Feral, Therian or Kemonomimi (Not a furry, just a human with animal ears and a tail)?
Anthro, though I appreciate art in all styles.
*Are you a fursuiter? If yes, how many do you own? If No, do you ever plan on being a suiter?
Fursuits creep me out, so no. Very no.
*How many of your friends are furry?
Most of them, and the rest are at least sympathetic.
*How many pets do you own, if any?
Zero
*Aside from furry what other interests do you have?
Japanese popular culture, music, reading, teaching, history
*Are you confident enough in yourself to say that you're a fur, no matter what the media says?
I wouldn't say it to any and all. It's a personal matter, and something that I do outside of normal times.
Meetups
*Do you attend any cons? If no, would you attend any cons? If yes, which cons have you been to?
A couple times to Conifur before it folded. I probably wouldn't mind going to another, but I'd have to go with someone; I just don't know enough people to just wander around.
*Do you go to local meetups(bowling, public outings...etc)?
No. I just started lurking on the local email lists, but they seem much younger than I.
*Have you ever attended a furry party? If no, would you attend one?
No. No one has invited me to one (or likely to do so.)
Online
*Have you ever met up with a fur you talked to online?
Yes; several times.
*What furry websites do you attend?
Mostly FA at this point. There are others?
*What non furry websites do you frequent?
HRWiki, Livejournal, lately Discogs.com
*Has the fandom done anything for you that you're thankful for? Has it taught you anything or brought you anything you treasure greatly?
It brought me my SO and many of friends. If I didn't have that, I'd be really lonely.

My Experimental Sounds: Russolo

This is too large to post on FA (and perhaps doesn't meet the AUP? not sure). Anyway, a remix of a piece I originally put together in 1991. More information can be found at Ookami Archive, my cache of video and sound projects.

狼と香辛料
Posted 16 years agoOne of the series that I really found interesting from last year was Spice and Wolf. It started out as a light novel series, and eventually got a manga and short anime series adaptation. It's a rather unusual fantasy series, as it focuses on Lawrence Craft, a trader who sells goods to various cities in a vaguely medieval European setting. Along the way, he meets Horo (or Holo), a wolf deity, who due to changing beliefs forced by a monotheistic Church, is driven from the town she has protected. Rather than focusing on grand themes of war and adventure, the first major arc is about a scheme to take advantage of the different purity of silver coins and the economics of a medieval society.
When I saw the show in fansub last year, I was wondering if it'd be big enough to get a US release, especially since it seems a bit of niche title. Today, I discover I guess I was wrong. Yen Press, the same folks that are doing the Haruhi Suzumiya novels, will begin releasing the novels and manga starting December this year, with a new volume coming out ever six months. In addition, Kadokawa Pictures USA (Lucky Star, Haruhi) along with FUNimation will release the original 13 episode series later this year. A second anime series will begin airing in Japan this summer.
