Posted 3 years agoI've been setting up a Mastodon account. Really like it so far, and Mastodon does a lot of things surprisingly better than Twitter. All the things that Twitter annoys you with? Mastodon generally solves!

MFF 2022 recap
Posted 3 years agoI've only done a recap of a convention once before, years ago, for an especially fun convention!
MFF this year was special for me. While I've had several conventions that had their high moments, this one was one of the best - was able to meet up with some really good friends, and I felt like I completely belonged with the people I was around. The actual activities we did weren't that exciting...but the people, the conversations, and spending time with them. That's where it's at.
It also helps that the panel that Lathreas and myself were involved in in was Friday afternoon ("Transformation, IRL?!? Time for Science!"), so for the rest of the convention we were off the hook! :3
So, without further ado, here's my personal recap:
Thursday 2022-12-01:
= I got some work done on the slides and my part of the script, and I even managed to get a workout in during the early afternoon. Woo!
= I met up with Lathreas, got them checked in to the Crowne Plaza, and had dinner with them at Caddyshack inside the Crowne Plaza.
= We did some work on the slides for our panel as well.
Friday 2022-12-02:
= Sharu and I grabbed breakfast at the DoubleTree.
= Lathreas and I gave our panel at 3pm central. It went off without a hitch.
= The room was nicely filled and the vast majority of people were really engaged and stayed to the end. So many great questions. And nobody asked about CRISPR – the audience clearly understood that CRISPR isn’t the main tool in our toolbox for transformations!
= Many people stayed after the end and asked questions for over 30 minutes afterwards.
= Lathreas and I talked with a few stragglers for over an hour after that, just outside the panel room (in the 2nd floor of the fishbowl)
= I stopped by to say hi to the Primal Hardwere team – I chatted briefly with Rose, Xijque, Grizz, and Wolf, though couldn’t stay too long because they had a lot of customers to help.
= Yksteldus, Fyrinlight, Lathreas, Sharu, and myself had dinner at Bub City.
= Yksteldus, Fyrinlight, and Lathreas joined Sharu and myself in our room to chat before Sharu and Yk started fursuiting. We talked about plans for 2023 including other convention plans, as well as Mastodon. We also "raved" about the amazing music you can make by playing recorders off-tune.
= Later in the evening, I followed Sharu fursuiting for a while and snapped several nice pictures. :3
Saturday 2022-12-03:
= I attended a panel Keiro was leading, “How to Communicate in ASL, Do's and Don'ts”. While Keiro had to deal with an equipment failure, he led a really engaging conversation and lots of people were really engaged.
= Lathreas, myself, Yksteldus, Fyrinlight, and Langlley went to the “Transformation (TF) Meet and Greet” coordinated by ForeBucks and Zil (started at 3pm central).
---- We met a few fun people there, like Kirisha, and [person formerly known as Lumen].
---- A few people recognized Lathreas and myself from our panel, and let us know they were really impressed!
= Lathreas and I joined Yksteldus, Fyrinlight, and Langlley in their room to chat until dinner.
---- Some of the conversation was figuring out where to eat.
---- Yk and Fyre were showing off this really interesting not-really-eggnog, thick alcoholic drink. Was surprisingly tasty.
= The 5 of us met up with Elapids, and we met Sharu and Tayu for dinner at Shoeless Joes. We invited Keiro as well but he couldn’t make it work unfortunately.
--- Was a great dinner. Conversation included football (apparently Elapids is into it as well, not just Tayu!), a little bit of conversation - We were initially worried that the live music would be too loud, but it was actually nice and the musicians played some good songs. We left them some tips, too.
---- The walk to the restaurant, and the walk back, were suuuuper cold though. Meep!
= Lathreas and I chatted with a few rubber-inclined folks – Kirisha, Kronas, and a couple others.
= Lathreas and I went to the “Care and Feeding of Rubber Critters” panel led by Archer Wolf, Stormy Kittyhawk, and Klaga Skunk (started at 10pm central). It was interesting to hear about different types of rubber, the sorts of effects and properties rubbers have, and how to care for them.
= Sharu got into his fursuit and I handled him for a while. We met up with a few of his friends throughout the late evening, and also with Fyrinlight and Yksteldus.
Sunday 2022-12-04:
= Sharu, Orstedd (Sharu’s friend), Lathreas, Nix, and myself had breakfast at the DoubleTree. Qwalo joined us in spirit (though they were happily asleep XD).
= Lathreas, Keiro, Yksteldus, Fyrinlight, and myself went to the Dealer’s Den to mill around and chat for the rest of our time at the convention.
---- I made sure to say hi to Serathin at his booth and had a good conversation with him and his mate about life, writing, and a variety of new business ideas ranging from silly to serious.
---- Several of us picked up silly TF-related badges or other things.
---- My personal assignment was to look for a dakimakura, though I didn’t find anything that was my style.
---- Lathreas and myself stopped by to say hi to the Primal Hardwere team again before leaving.
= Sharu, myself, and Lathreas walked back towards the hotels together and said our goodbyes before we boarded our respective shuttles (either from the DoubleTree for Sharu and I, or from the Crowne Plaza for Lathreas). Lathreas was in good shape for their flight, and Sharu and myself made it onto the plane without any issues.

So like...I'm at a conference in Washington, DC until Wednesday afternoon. I have a problem: my fellow conference-goers are generally boring after 5pm. This dragon is bored. Help!!!
I know this is a bit last-minute! Hoping someone in the area sees this...XP

Qualifying exam, passed!

It's been a long time since I've done this journal thing. I've been pretty much swamped with lab, science things, school, that sort of thing. Today I had my qualifying exam, which is basically the checkpoint at the beginning of your PhD thesis research. Basically, if you pass that, then you've demonstrated you've got what it takes to do the research, and finish up a thesis within a few years.
So...I passed! I had some pretty big difficulties when I was starting to prepare for the qualifying exam, but things finally began to click. It's still an ongoing learning process of course, but I can finally say: Yes, I do really know how to do science and design a research project.
Several years of work ahead before I finish my PhD thesis, of course. But I'm finally underway, which is a huge relief. Seriously. Massive, massive relief.
So many of you guys have been so supportive of me during my preparation. My partner sharu first and foremost. 
mechedragon has given me a LOT of awesome, incredibly useful advice. 
chrontius for keeping me inspired to keep at it, even in some pretty bad moments of self-doubt. So many other friends have helped and supported me along the way, I can't list everyone here, nor do I want to for fear of forgetting a name. Just...thank you all!

SSD get!
Posted 13 years agoI've just finished installing a new SSD I juuuust got. It's absolutely screaming and makes me slightly giddy. Photoshop opens in less than 4 seconds, web browsing somehow became instantanous, and opening a file in any program is faster than a blink of an eye. The drive 'data transfer rate' on the windows experience index is a 7.6 out of the 7.9. Zoooommmmm. XD
Much better than the old hard drive, which was starting to slow down and made me think it was nearing failure, especially given it was a Hitachi "Death"Star. I've had an HD fail on me before (though data was backed up, so no data loss), so I took the seemingly similar slow-down seriously, and also used it as an excuse to get a bit of a treat. Wooooo.
Samsung 830 SSD, 512GB.

Posted 13 years agoHi guys, for the first time in several months I actually have some free time! So, I'm open for commissions. Probably want to do somewhere between 2-4 commissions. This will also help me pay off my room costs from AC! (And other important/not-important stuff!)
Price list (all are negotiable): 1-2 characters included. 3rd character +$20. "SFW" and "NSFW" pictures okay; "NSFW" preferred. ^.-.~
Looped animation on digital shading - $110

I take paypal and checks. I generally prefer half payment up front and half at the end, but I'm flexible as far as timing is concerned, and if you want to do all up front or all at the end, that's probably fine. I like to give commissioners progress pics as I work and keep them involved throughout the process. FYI, I anticipate with this batch of commissions that it will keep me busy for about 2 months.

2012.06.15, Friday night:
Flight delayed >1.5 hours. Worked on finishing up Snoqualmie picture (in excess of 6 months at that point). Got to Pittsburgh. Rode cab to Westin and arrived at ~11:00 or 11:30. Dropped some stuff off in the room, said hi to Xijque and the other roommates including Heartlessfang, Amwulf, and Foxwithinbox, and went downstairs to the zoo. Met up with Zantal and Reveal, then briefly said hi to Tojo and Sabur. Then Zantal, Reveal, and I wanted to go see a comedy show, but I didn’t have a con badge at that point (and registration was closed for the night), so I borrowed Sabur’s badge to get access to the improv comedy show, which was really funny. Went back to Xijque’s room fairly late and basically just showered and went to bed.
2012.06.16, Saturday:
Meandered around; wasted time. Met up with Shyz and a couple of his friends, then went to lunch with them (picked up food at Fernando’s). We came back and watched the fursuit parade, and Zantal and Reveal joined us. Shyz and his friends ran off, and I went with Zant and Rev into the dealer’s den to look at stuff, then Zant pulled me into the art show to look at various things, and he bid on a couple pieces. After that, Zant and me went to a little bit of a panel on fursuiting, which wasn’t quite what we expected, so we dipped out of there early.
We went back to the Zoo, then we formed a group of myself, Zantal, Reveal, Tojo, Sabur, and Pyxaron and went to some sort of pub restaurant (I only had a Guiness because I’d already had lunch), then back to the Zoo for an hour or two. Then the 5 of us walked to their room at the Omni. We chilled and rested a few hours. I drew for a bit while Sabur and Tojo watched some cartoons and How It’s Made, and I have no idea what Zant and Rev were doing besides just being cuddle monsters. XD Then we left the room and went on a bit of an adventure to find a pizza place, Ephesus Mediterranean Restaurant. It was deliiiicious, and impossible to find! We had far too much fun getting there. And NO, I’m not telling you exactly where it is! Nyahhh!!! ^.-.^
After that, I hung out with Noxy, Auspex, and the other 2 guys in their room at the Omni for a couple hours, and Noxy showed me some of his home-made beer which was delicious. We also played around with a silly DJ app, mixing dubstep and country songs which wound up with some hilarious combinations.
Then I dragged Noxy and Auspex to the dance in the Pittsburgh Ballroom and also met up with Zant, Rev, Morto, and Alastago, and a few others. After about 30 minutes we all dipped out and just started chatting and being silly in the area outside the Ballroom. Then by that time it was about 2am, so I slipped back into the hotel room and just got a shower and went to sleep.
2012.06.17, Sunday:
Got up 11:30 and had granola bars for breakfast, then got an energy drink from a convenience store across the street from the Westin.
Went into convention center and picked up a ticket to the 2 and Kage show that was for 3:30pm later that day. Then, I met up with Zant, Rev, Tojo, Sabur, Morto, the Alastago, and a lot of other people in the dealer’s den and stood around talking a while.
Then we all dashed off to get Italian ice, which in itself was a cool little adventure.
Got back, chatted with Malo briefly before the show.
I watched 2 and Kage’s show with Xijque and Foxwithinbox.
Ran off and met up with Zantal and Reveal before they headed off to the airport; gave them hugs and talked a little bit in the Omni lobby.
Then I went to Malo’s room after and we hung out and cuddled for about an hour.
Theeen I caught up with Xijque et al at Fernando’s for dinner.
Down to the zoo for a bit. Saw Shyz again and we chatted a bit, then I ran into Pyxaron again and talked with him a while.
Went back to Malo’s room at 1822 for a little while for a room party. Saw Neokai, Char, Tigerpaw, and a few others there as well.
Then I went back to our room, but then HeartlessFang and I decided to go down to the zoo for a last time before it closed, so we drew for a bit and talked with people for a while.
Back up to Xijque’s room. Fang and I got back to the room and (mostly) everybody was still awake, so we talked and cuddled a while. Then we got into a debate about how much luck a four-leaf clover has compared to a three-leaf clover, because Xijque had a bunch of 3-leaf clovers on his boxers. We sort of developed a quantification system for ‘luck’. Xijque said that the more ‘chips’ you have, the more luck you have (DO bear in mind we had been having some drinks of Riesling by this time, and were a tad loopy too!). Then Foxwithinbox said that okay, if it’s based on chips, then you should exchange all your high-value chips to trade in for a lot more low-value chips. Cue awkward silence for about 3-5 seconds. Then Xijque, Heartlessfang, and I BURST out laughing hysterically! Oh my god it was such a hilarious situation...we realized how ridiculous of a conversation it was we were having, and just how silly the suggestion sounded on top of that. Then I just kept laughing...and laughing...and laughing. o.-.o without end...hysterically...minutes passed while I still laughed. o.-.O I held up some (clean) boxers to my eyes as I started crying, and by that point I was just on the floor hunched up and propped against one of the beds. I was laughing at myself by that point, and eventually I calmed down enough, though still snickering or making weird laugh-suppression sounds, and got my shower. And kept giggling at random points throughout the shower. Xijque made sure to make fun of me for it the next day. :P
2012.06.18, Monday:
Woke up, we carried stuff down to the car, then stood around for a bit. Ran into Tojo and Sabur again and gave them some hugs before Xijque et al went to Fernando’s again, for lunch. After lunch, we all went up to the Westin’s little Pennsylvania Ballroom and sat around an hour chatting and goofing off before Xijque drove Heartlessfang and myself to the airport. We got there in “plenty” of time for my flight, but god damn the security line was long, so I got to my flight literally a couple minutes before it was due to leave. I was the only one at the gate by that point, and they checked my name off of a list, apparently, and then closed the door as soon as I was on the plane. Damn, talk about a close call! But I got to Boston okay and everything’s all dandy now, yay! I also finished the Snoqualmie picture on the plane ride back. So also, 6 months after starting the darn picture, I’m done and it’s super awesome!!

2012.06.15, Friday night:
Flight delayed >1.5 hours. Worked on finishing up Snoqualmie picture (in excess of 6 months at that point). Got to Pittsburgh. Rode cab to Westin and arrived at ~11:00 or 11:30. Dropped some stuff off in the room, said hi to Xijque and the other roommates including Heartlessfang, Amwulf, and Foxwithinbox, and went downstairs to the zoo. Met up with Zantal and Reveal, then briefly said hi to Tojo and Sabur. Then Zantal, Reveal, and I wanted to go see a comedy show, but I didn’t have a con badge at that point (and registration was closed for the night), so I borrowed Sabur’s badge to get access to the improv comedy show, which was really funny. Went back to Xijque’s room fairly late and basically just showered and went to bed.
2012.06.16, Saturday:
Meandered around; wasted time. Met up with Shyz and a couple of his friends, then went to lunch with them (picked up food at Fernando’s). We came back and watched the fursuit parade, and Zantal and Reveal joined us. Shyz and his friends ran off, and I went with Zant and Rev into the dealer’s den to look at stuff, then Zant pulled me into the art show to look at various things, and he bid on a couple pieces. Posted 13 years agoYup! was fun. once again I didnt even attend any panels (other than a portion of one with zantal for 30 mins), but rather just hung out with people the whole time. yaaaay fun and stuff. I'm tired and posting from my phone (still at the westin one more night in xijque's room), soooo thats all i feel like typing right now. to all the people i saw, heya! and im glad to have met you n stuff!

Posted 13 years agoI'm getting tired of all these popularity-grabbing journals, saying "just watch me, post a journal, and show me a link to your journal, and you'll be entered to win a picture/commission/cash money". I guess as far as viral marketing goes it's not the worst, but...blah. It just strikes me as a sort of spam, really. Maybe slightly better than the spam I get everyday in my email inboxes. In my opinion, let word spread naturally out of skill and endeavor of posted artwork.
