Dragon's Dogma is a mid-2000s game that was ported from console around a year ago. I played it back then, and I've played it now, and it is outstanding. It's a little graphically dated, but the world is engaging, a little tough even on easy, and it's got some outstanding mechanics (such as grabbing onto and climbing up enemies to hit weak spots and having to hang on for dear life).

You don't go this journey alone -- You create your own NPC partner, and are able to summon up to two more other other people's creations to help you out. (This makes sense in context, I promise.)

PROS: -Great story
-Great creatures and environment
-Intense fights
-Semi-open world
-Customizeable class system
-GREAT control scheme with controller support
-Works on lower-end computers pretty well
-There's a quality-of-life modding community
-You can cheese the companion system by hiring pawns that are way higher level than you to wreck shit if you want, or borrow a friend's.
-Laura Bailey's voice, a lot

CONS: -Not for someone who wants to kick it to easy and coast. You can't, I've tried.
-Modding community is small, and the game limitations make it so only small changes are really able to be made
-While a same-sex romance option is available, you have to be specific in the way you trigger it or it won't work. The game decides on your love interest based on who you interact with the most, basically, super weird.
-Fast-travel system is limited and based on putting down crystals you can pot back to later. Fuck you if you forgot to put one, you're walking back, friend.
-SHUT UP, PAWNS. I KNOW THERE IS <insert thing we've passed 80 times> NEARBY.
