Today is different. Far different from the decade I've spent as a journalist. From my time as a cub reporter to reporter and then an editor, Id learnt a great many things about how the world works. Cheesy as this may be, I am thinking that perhaps... I should leave the stage... leave the industry.
I've seen many journalists, both the talented and the hopeless, exit the company's gate... A majority of them left for greener pastures... while some left simply because they can't take the pressure. I don't know what I should consider myself between these two groups. One can say that I had witnessed some very bad and awful things, incidences that were convoluted, messy... And some that were just plain evil. Many of the things were matters surrounding my co-workers, who a majority of them I considered as friends. But I believe I need to leave them behind. Some bad people are ruining everything that we had worked so hard to achieve. In the end, they wanted their way... they don't care about the company's nearly 180-year history. Every problem, from mismanagement to harassment and syphoning of funds, were ignored. Top management does not care. The company is now an empty shell.
Former workers and journalist are now mocking this once great and illustrious company. Though initially, I find such criticisms hard to deal with, they are justified.
Many of the reporters that we have now lack initiative. They simply go to an assignment and report back what is considered barebones requirements for any journalist needed to ask in an interview. They did not try to dig more information. They are unfortunately dull and lazy. They never bothered in upgrading their language skills, which usually leaves editors scratching their heads trying to figure out what the reporters were trying to explain.
Not all of them, of course, are incompetent. Some are good, but unfortunately, many of them are just plain awful. On the other hand, the company's sub-editors are neglected. No training has ever been provided to them for the past half-decade. This is sad as the company has some of the best sub-editors in the industry...
I've yet to tender my resignation. I will do so by the end of this year. That is a fact... In the meantime, I am now on a two-week leave to sort things out.
I need to clear my head... and find the right path for my next journey in life.
