Buttersloth Species Information
Got irrationally obsessed with my fictional species and made some Lore⢠This Document will update with visuals and other details eventually as this is still a Work in Progress.
Species Status:
-Semi Open/Regulated
-Anyone can make this species as long as they follow parameters described in this journal. Some might be unusual and/or conditional so best to familiarize yourself with them.
Origin:
No one knows the true origin of the Buttersloth, but legend tells of a story where the fae reigned, and slowly tricked other species out of their best traits - most being left unable to even communicate. When a faerie came across the sloth, however, something unusual happened. As it tried to siphon the essence of the sloth, it never would have foreseen that it would be its' demise, for the essence of the Sloth was laziness. Yes, the fairy eventually became too lazy to finish it's usual trick, and soon drifted off into sleep. What woke up was a fused creature of both mischief and sloth and the rest was history.
Biology
-They resemble sloths, most adults being anywhere from 1"- 5" tall. Their arms are longer than a human's just like a sloth, and their fingers have four talon like fingers on their arms, and 3 on their toes. They have four arms and two legs.
-After they exit the child stage, they grow large wings and antennae based on any specific butterfly that lives in our world. There are also markings based on the butterfly in some spots on the main body. Their coloration is often unnatural but not always.
-They are omnivorous liking leaves, twigs, nectar, bugs and even small rodents.
-Talking about lifespans here. I mention very small numbers for ages but only for our convenience. For more acuracy, multiply each year by 100 as these are a conditionally immortal species:
-They hatch from colorful eggs as grubs and then grow into children. As they mature, instead of cocooning like a butterfly, they have a six month long period of semi-hibernation that results into their passage into young adulthood that is marked by sprouting wings and antennae. It takes them a while to learn to fly. They spend three weeks as grubs, three months as children, a year as young adults and five years as adults. If they fail to reach adulthood, they perish and after five years, if they did not perform the sage ritual, they perish as well. If they performed both the adulthood and the sage ritual in time, they can live forever.
Personality
-They exemplify one personality trait as an individual, some being entirely angry, some being filled with whimsy, and others can be more abstract like mournful to the ages past, or lustful for knowledge. Now mix all that with laziness.
Society
-They have a rigid system with nobility and royalty (titles that are not hereditary but discarded upon death), with most people wanting to dedicate one's life to a specific task. While most Buttersloths are lazy, it is taboo to express idleness or complain in their society so most struggle with exhaustion and burnout.
Romance
While the sloths reproduce sexually, they do not correlate that with romance or family, most happy to lay their eggs and hand them off to the designated hatchery. Instead, it is most common to form a partnership with a Florith - a flower humanoid companion species to the Buttersloth, that can often turn romantic in nature. Sloth/Sloth relationships aren't forbidden but very uncommon.
Magic
They have very weak magical abilities that don't reach the level of a potent reality bender, but can manipulate theor surroundings to make life easier. Each butter has its own magical skill. Example: short distance teleporting, illusion making, body stretching, telekinesis within a personal bubble. As they enter the sage stage, their power becomes more potent.
Naming
Most start out with their given name and many don't change it, with only those who enter the sage stage of their life, finally being able to pick new names they will spend eons with. A given name is usually a short word that already has meaning in English or other languages. Names akin to Cloud or Plum, do the trick. Sage names are also words, but they tend to be longer and more conceptual - Legacy, Yearning, etc.
Rituals:
The Adulthood Ritual -
Many young adult butters don't make it past their first year - usually due to failure to complete the Adulthood Ritual. This ritual usually involves going into Florith lands and finding a companion. Butters that accomplish this, become full adults. Those that don't, either die, becoming ghosts only being able to communicate with sages, or on very rare occasions, become litches, which are pretty much immortal sterile teenage butters that lose control over their minds and surrender to magical chaos. They are feared and hunted by unmarred butters as they tend to cause a lot of damage and cost lives.
The Sage Ritual - Most adult butters never reach this Stage as this involves a process not guaranteed success and often too difficult for many. This involve meditation on finding one's magical and spiritual zenith that can span many years. Most butters have outlived their Florith by now, and dedicate themselves to their society completely. (Doesn't preclude them from occasional romance, but they are forever changed from that point on. This is also when they pick their new names.
Parameters to follow when making your own Buttersloth:
-Can't be Adult or Sage if Rituals not completed.
-Has to be a sloth with six limbs and wings + antennae based on a real butterfly.
-Change their appearance as they age.(Our Irl time)An egg can hatch at any time, a grub spends 3 weeks as a grub, 3 months as a child(no wings yet), a year as a young adult(wings grown). If a ritual is not completed, change design into a ghost or litch. If completed, they are now adult and can live for five more years. They also get a Florith companion. If Sage stage not reached, they become a ghost, and if reached, they acquire immortality but the only physical difference is the golden sparkling magic that now follows a sage during flight.
-Their size can't exceed 5 feet and should not be lower than 1 foot unless they are younger.
-Rites:
Adult Ritual is accomplished by donating at least $50 to a charity and sending me the proof. (Picture of invoice with your @) If this is not done within 1 year after your butter has reached young adulthood, it will have to die. You have an option to keep your butter if you alter its design to look more ghost-like and follow the custums in this journal. Anyone who refuses to change the appearance is automatically made a litch and will be treated as such. An adult Butter can now obtain a Florith Companion.
Sage Ritual is achieved by donating at least $100 to a charity and sending me the proof. (Picture of invoice with your @) This cannot be done before on becomes an adult. If after 5 years of being an adult, you have not done the ritual, you will be regarded as a ghost and I ask you to change the design into a ghost. Litches cannot be created as adults.
Optional Section:
Knighthood:
If you want your Buttersloth to be knighted, donate at least $50 to my ko-fi. This is just a show of support. You get a knigh badge and sketch portrait of your butter.
