Home is where the enclave is.
There are no universal positions for Patriarchs; they are simply those who have shown some sort of useful ability, who then the other yinglets begin to look to for guidance in their area of expertise. If this goes on long enough, they not only grow stronger in their special skill, but also begin to develop a more leadership-oriented mind, and start settling into the role of a Patriarch.
Once a male has unofficially begun playing the role of a Patriarch, he is soon named an official one by the Matriarch and existing Patriarchs.
The "flavor" of any particular enclave is determined by both its female population and its Patriarchs; the Val Salian yinglet enclave has a useful spread of skills, aside from lacking a Patriarch of construction/woodwork for a generation or two. Any given enclave will simply use the skills of the Patriarchs they do have, and find some way to compensate for the types of skills/Patriarchs that they don't, at least until one comes along.

I think it's a genetic thing, like how some actual ladies are in general hairier than others.
It didn't seem to phase the Matriarch at all, if you noticed. She just wanted to "Shave it down" to make her seem more feminine. So it's possible that tooth sheering is a popular practice amongst female yinglets, and if don from an early age it would give that appearance that all girls have smaller, daintier teeth. Kinda like how it's more "Feminine" to have less body hair in humans :3
So it might not be a genetic thing at all! It might be a social difference considering how all girls are in enclaves :D They dont need that shell tooth to break open stuff as they're pampered by males and stuff and it helps identify them from those horrid beastly dudes.
THATS MY THEORY ANYWAY.

Haha, the answer got here before I did.
Yes, males and females have generally the same shelltooth length biologically, but it's customary in just about every enclave for the females to shave down the larger, nerve-less layers of their shellteeth, so they're rarely seen with long ones.

O_O looking at that knife jabbed into the table... Either that is one incredibly short knive, the table is the least dense thing in the world (because I do not think it is that hollow, if at all), or that hunter has one heck of an arm... What the heck does he hunt down to feed the village(Poac) anyway?
What if it wasn't his knife and it's been stuck there for many yinglett generations, since they initially scavanged the wood for their table (or the whole table itself). He just likes to grabby grabby~
I know i would if i was sat at a table with a knife stuck in it.
THE MYSTERY OF THE KNIFE~

THE MYSTERY OF THE KNIFE~
"The one who is able it pull the mighty knife from the mystical meeting bark shall be the new lord of yinglet foodstuffs, just as Poac had a few months ago with that circular copper trinket upon the dried pink goop." I imagine that there has to be some sort of funny initiation that each of the patriarchs had to go through.
As you will reveal later, they have such short lifespans that they almost go through adolescence to dementia without passing through the usual stage of maturity. If that racial progeria could be cured, they would be equal to us easily. When your physical age is equivalent to 65 but your mental age is equivalent to 21 it is hard to have a functioning society.
This is the part where someone goes "Wait, wait, wait. Who said anything about me coming over here to live with you guys? I'm already living in a home with some very good friends of mine, thank you very much. I'm just here for the negotiations and that's it."
But knowing Kass, he'll probably not say something like this and will roll with the punches since the above quote which could be clearly misunderstood.

It's a lot like being Jewish in Pre-1500's Europe, or any other comparable ethnic minority; since they're only marginally accepted by the larger society, they need to form their own collectives to provide social and economic needs. Even if you worked and spent most of your time around the majority culture, at the end of the day, you're still more a part of "The Family" than you'll ever be a part of the majority culture.
And to yinglets, who have pretty much no real place at all in human culture, the effect is even more extreme, so neither humans or yinglets would ever take a look at a yinglet and think he's got a job, or a house in the city, etc.
If one is a yinglet, then Home is the local enclave, and he/she is a part of that family by default.

The Patriarchs, having proven to have some of the most useful gene-sets in the enclave, tend to get priority access to the females.
So the population of any given enclave will often resemble the makeup of its population of females and Patriarchs.
Zally's got a whole lot of Kattajak's genes in her, aside from the bloodthirst.
But remember, back in these days, a healthy bloodlust was a nice thing for a leader to have, as that ensures he can take care of threats to the population!
Good ol' bloodlust.

those last two...seem like perfectly reasonable fellows, particularly Patriarch Narklet. maybe its the way he's dressed...that or because he hasn't opened his mouth yet and shown all personality.
also the Matriarch seems to have flopped from opportunistic to very complacent and caring in a snap XD

Your map says south of the grasslands is too hot for humans. Do yinglets (having avian characteristics) have higher body temperatures? If yinglets can survive a wet-bulb temperature of, say, 40 C where humans can only survive 35 C this might give the yinglets a refuge if humans ever decide to engage in species cleansing.
What is Vizlet planning. It really looks like she has something big in the works. Or still knows way more than she's letting on. I wonder if they have more of those little green stones and just didn't know they could do that, Until just right now. Definitely gives more cause to why Lopin last looked to be getting hunted down under the Matriarchs orders. Which makes me immediately suspicious that if I'm right Narklet will have some important part to play.
On a completely different note. I'm also really curious which of the other girls might be daughters of the patriarchs. And also which if any are Vizlets daughters. I think Vesaria is Figgins' daughter

Well thank you very much! Plenty more to come, I assure you~
And actually, at the beginning, I made the firm decision to write and draw for internet-style scrolldown style, because I so often wish I could jam in a few more panels to any given comic; and when I don't have to adhere to a standard print page size, I can keep a comic going for as long as it needs!
But I also never expected to even consider printing or selling OOPs-related stuff; I always thought it would just be a nice little project to keep me drawing each week, and maybe be followed by a dozen or two people who liked it enough. Now, though, people are constantly asking WHERE IS YOUR PATREON I WANT TO GIVE YOU MONEY so things have gone a bit differently than I expected.

Heh, yeah. I started with 'Ends and Beginnings' which uses a more conventional page format. Somehow I missed that the main story was twice the size. It would be nice to see in print if it's feasible to split the pages up without breaking the flow too much. It would be nice to have it in a more permanent form. Either way, it'll be fun to read.
I know it isn't how yinglet society works (at least I think...), but Chakki and Vesaria would be the most adorable couple. ...probably obnoxious too, but still I am now contemplating commisionning you for a non-cannon date comic of the two sometime when you are open.
Chakki is probably the most stylish farmer that has ever existed of any species. I guess he is technically more like "The minister of farming" but according to your info text he got there by being a really succesful farmer.

Kass: "Narklet, I understand you're a yinglet who knows how to get things."
Narklet: "I'm known to locate certain things, time-to-time. What do you need?"
Kass: "A tiny pickaxe and a poster of Ginny."
My suspicion of Vizlet's participation in some conspiracy are lessened by her reaction to the news that Kass was once human. Although, ArmoredKangaroo's comment has me second-guessing myself, but I'm not that Hell-bent into believing Vizlet as some sort of antagonist. That title could easily go to someone else; even someone not yet introduced or no one at all. Perhaps the only obstacle for Kass to overcome is a mental one rather than a physical one.
