You answered your own question, and correctly.
I "submit" the stories as .txt files, even though I happen to write them in .docx format. What I do at the end of each episode is to cut and paste that episode into a new document, and then save that new document as a .txt file. Then, when it comes time to upload the episode, I upload the .txt file.
It's not completely perfect, in that .txt will occasionally not recognize a character, but for the most part, I find it works.
