Squiggle, these two pages are heart wrenching. You've done a great job, sweetheart. I'm really proud of the story and how it's going along. Hard to take, but wonderful story telling. I have to keep reminding myself it's only a story.
I am curious and Zee's comment, though, and why did Some say he was alive, 'for now.'
Looking forward to the next pages.
Hugs

Oh god, this just struck a major chord with me. I spent the last month on the jury for a murder trial involving domestic abuse and the husband killing his wife of 20 years. Where Soufflé says he and Abbey were going to tell him together, that is pretty much what happened in this case, and there was a lot of discussion about exit strategy in abusive relationships and how that moment is the most dangerous. Suddenly made this all very real.
My mum had to pretty much run for it in the middle of the night. He kept using my sister as a way to stop her from running away. She planned it all and saved her money, grabbed my sister and ran through the back gardens of her neighbours with him chasing behind. Luckily he'd broken his leg in a fight so he couldn't really keep up...
I find myself having to restrain dark and vindictive thoughts towards Jack. In moments like this, it's better to mind one's humanity, but the animosity towards monsters this horrible is undeniably strong. And in this especially weak state, it'd be easy to hope that he didn't make it. Victims of burns that extreme have a slim chance to begin with. But the monster somehow usually manages to survive and go on to cause more terror.
well I still think there is paperwork involved, but uncles can take take on their nieces and nephews IF they can provide for them, with or without a "godparent" title. Also in this case he could just lie (or maybe tell the truth?) that gem is his daughter.
My family practiced "nesting" up until the end of the 1900's, they'd take a child from one family that had several children and give one to a related family if they had no children, or only one. The children might be a little confused growing up but when thy are 16 they usually get told the truth, that this was done to help another family, ease burden on their real parents etc. They still grew up in a loving home and their real parents were right down the street so not like they didn't know them.
