The best rendition I've done of
preppymarshmousee's signature character 'Penny', demonstrating what Mud Scouts do best--"venturing forth into terrain of questionable solidity". This can be considered the sort of material future 'Mud Scout' pics will feature, although probably with more characters. The other recruits will appear modeling their uniforms on solid ground before marching into the marshes, so to speak. Penny, one of two 'patrol leaders', gets "first sink" since she's already been depicted in a clean uniform.
For a while, I was having difficulty getting mouse characters to look "right", till I finally noticed that most of the better-looking ones have their ears situated more to the sides of their heads instead of the top corners (it's odd that I should miss this since two of my feline characters and the meerkat have this design). So, this pic should be considered a descendant of "Penny Remix", rather than of the previous pic in my gallery, "Patrol Leader Penny", which was done in August of last year. This one also benefits from the change in the way I draw characters' eyes, allowing for more color and depth.
While the backdrop looks complex, it really only consists of a half-dozen objects copypasta'd, cloned, squashed, stretched, flipped/folded/spindled/mutilated, then layered to fill up the background. The vector-ish look mostly came about as a result of building these shapes with the lasso tool. Because of the multitude of layers, the uncompressed version of this pic weighs in at a hefty 90 megabytes. The only elements drawn in with the pen tool are the footprints, which are much darker than the surface in order to depict the deep, dark mud below being churned to the surface by Penny's actions. Just think, somewhere down in that sticky muck are her formerly-shiny penny loafers :)
Trivia: the "Bog Trot" is an actual type of hike suggested in the Boy Scouts of America manual (at least it was one when I was in the BSA during the 1980's).
Brush-inked pencils colored with, and digital backdrop added in Micrografx Picture Publisher 8.

It's an old expression -- maybe it's being forgotten finally, which might be for the best. "Bog Trotter" was an impolite thing to call somebody who was Irish. It suggested they were poor, rural, and ignorant, and they generally resented it even if they were poor, rural, an ignorant... I assumed that was why you called the pic "Penny's Bog Trot". Not that she *was* literally Irish, but a semi-ironic reference.
I never did any "Bog trots" when I was in the Scouts, but then there aren't many areas of such questionable solidity in the south of England (unless it's been raining heavily recently. )
It would've been cool to see some of the girls in my Scout Troop lose their shoes this way.

"Why, I haven't laughed so hard in weeks. Dear Bethany was walking along in the moors when she suddenly sank to her hips. There she was, her skirt flowing away from her like some strange plant leaf, or a Hula dancers grass skirt. She was struggling to escape as the moor slowly drew her down the further. It was a good thing that we had that climbing rope I tell you. Of course, we never told her that the muck is only four feet deep there. Must not ruin the joke after all."
Bog Trot? Nope, don't recall it (BSA 1960's.) I do though remember the washout patrols at Clarke AFB, where you were often chest deep in muck. Clarke was built on volcanic sand deposits, and a couple of the the 'gullies' could swallow an F4D without any problem at all.
I was in the Webelos (in between Cub and Boy scouts) and then progressed into the BSA around about 1980 (I went through the transition from the all-green to two-tone uniforms). The BSA manual at the time mentioned the 'bog trot' as one of it's theme hikes. I have an older manual (possibly 1950's-early '60s) that doesn't, to my knowledge, talk about any sort of themed hike, so it's entirely possible it was added during the '70's-'80's. It's anybody's guess if it's still there now.
Well, to be honest, the 'bog trot' has little to do with what was depicted in the above pic. It was described as a hike around the perimeter of a marsh or swamp, and only hinted that you "might get your feet wet". As for that other thing, I drifted out of involvement after the meetings were moved from Saturday mornings to Friday afternoons, which became.., um "inconvenient", sooo I haven't had a dog in that fight for a loooong time.
