In fact no. Mae's shirt has the the mathematical sign of null meaning "Nothing"or "Blank" and while Mae is not definable by this the devs have said it is is a happy coincidence as you are often if not always intended to be Mae. Mae is a null intended to be you intended to act as you would only to (possibly) break more rules.
Then it makes perfect sense why my brain would project me into the character, hence the "feeling" of seeing "it" as a male (because I'm a male), ergo "filling in the blank".
