One would be well advised not to disturb the sleeping pharaohs of the Egyptian Pyramids; Anubis doesn't take kindly to tourists...
Well, here's me signing off for 2009 and indeed the patronisingly-named 'Noughties' with my final piece of artwork for the decade! Part of me will be rather glad to see the back of 2009; given the terrible art block (or possibly blocks) I have struggled with and problems in my real life, this year has not been my most artistically productive by any means. However, I'd like to think that I have made up for lack of quantity with plenty of quality.
I don't really know where the inspiration for this came from - I think I'd been looking at some of
wookiee 's rather delicious Anubis pictures for a bit too long, and suddenly felt the need to try drawing him myself. As per usual, it was far more difficult than I had anticipated - I love dynamic poses and angles like this, but as much as I do them frequently enough, they never get any easier. Getting the proportions right was as much about guesswork as anything else, and there are some sections that I'm still not happy with. To make matters worse, I have always struggled with canine faces, which is actually one of the big reasons why there is a marked lack of Rocky and Cassie artwork in my gallery. Having stared at various photographs and drawings of canine heads for a fair while before attempting this one, I think this is one of my better efforts.
As for the subject itself, I've come to the conclusion that there isn't a right or wrong way of drawing Anubis - the various references I used seem to depict him with a wide variety of jewellery, clothing and various other trinkets. What it does allow for therefore is a bit of creativity and personal choice, so I'm hoping my interpretation looks reasonably good. The background and scenery is not my best - I rushed it a bit because I didn't really know what I was doing. Worse than that was drawing all the tiny furries in the foreground, only to discover that the detail I put into them was lost when I resized the picture. Despite all that though, I think this is one of my better pieces in terms of technique/execution and visual impact.
Anyway, seeing as everyone probably has parties to go to, I shall bring a close to my jabbering and wish you all a very Happy New Year. Here's hoping for an enjoyable, successful and productive 2010!

I must confess, I still find muscles and anatomy really difficult. I don't really know what I'm doing with musculature most of the time, but I try to use other people's artwork to give me a rough idea. After all, I'm still on a learning curve.
Thanks, Rexxwolfe.

I like to think of the sky as showing the cumming of a devastatingly unstoppable thunderous ground shaking storm...
Only the thunder is the crashing of his almighty feet crunching his puny worshippers flat as they all serve to amuse his supreme soles and squash between his towering toes for his personal pleasure and erotic entertainment...
See? See how your artwork warps my mind?!
Also... absolutely awesome Anubis artwork!

Even without macro being my thing, this looks amazing! The number of little details is great... I really like the look of the fur texture and the shine on the metallic parts, and the strings of saliva are really well done too ...that's one big jackal. You clearly have a lot of talent!
Awesome! Doing the spraying over worked well and did change the pic for the better IMO. Also I take it were going to see him more often? Cause I'm sensing either a series like you do with him crushing someone under his feet or just like a pic or two with him smooshing people between his feet. X3 Plus you're welcome.
Looks good to me :D
And as for the:
"As for the subject itself, I've come to the conclusion that there isn't a right or wrong way of drawing Anubis"
I've seen Space-Anubis, so I think it's pretty much up to the artist at this point as to what the hell he looks like completely. XD

Unfortunately, it does. I saw your latest journal - sorry to hear things aren't too good at the moment, mate. I know how frustrating it can be when your capacity to be creative is limited. I didn't have the best of times in the last 6 months of 2009 myself and I'm only recently getting my artistic motivation back. I probably won't have much time when I get back to work as I'm on 42.5 hours per week myself along with an hour travelling each way.
But I wish you the best anyway, mate. I don't like to see you frustrated or upset. Just give yourself time and don't let any demanding fanboy types get you down.
(Oh, and I actually caught your page on 59994 views the other day - but seeing as we've exchanged artwork before, I didn't feel it fair to hang around to catch your 60k myself! Heh! Well done on the milestone, by the way.)

This... is incredible. And I say that in a very poignant matter, as I don't say it often.
Now I gotta admit, most of it is bias. I <3 canines, I <3 them especially when they're well muscled without being GRRR HUGE, and I <3 them especially when they're big and evilly destructive.
So... needless to say this one's thumbnail alone got me murring. And when it was blown up... well it just got better. The details on the little guys at his paws, his size, the fact that he seems to be enjoying this way too much... yes yes and yes.
Very well done. I'm sure I've said this somewhere else in your gallery as well, but this is easily my new favorite piece in your already awesomely endowed gallery. Keep up the good work in the new decade!

Awesome job. I love the upwards perspective, doing a beautiful job at capturing the enormity of his presence. :)
Oh and yeah... Anubis is simply badass.
It's just a shame that standing before him and waiting to be stomped on, would have such an insignificant feel to it, as just another crunchy bug beneath his magnificent paws. :)

zomg that is not just good...its ORGASMIC!!! [i think I just made a new word] Anyways, I love the detail you put into this masterpiece. I especially love the detail you put into the back paw! Somehow you always seem to surpass our expectations. I hope this year goes better for you!
If you want criticism from professional digital artists and designers, you should join either Storm Artists or Concept Art. Those people will nitpick the shit out of every little detail of your art and give you very constructive criticism. But please don't make the mistake some have made and confuse said criticism for "trolling" or "insults". But as long as you take what they say to heart, everyone who joins those sites leaves about 10 times better an artist.
I do appreciate constructive criticism, and indeed I'm not one of said people who mistakes it for trolling. I'm not sure I would feel motivated enough to post my art elsewhere specifically for the purpose of critique, but thanks for the tip. I'll bear it in mind.
Yeah, there's a lot of people on sites like that on deviantart *shudder*
DA: HAY GUISE LOOK AT MY SHITTY ANIME CHARACTER
Critic: The arms are a bit too long and the eyes look weird
DA: STOP INSULTING MY WORK, IM REPORTING YOU
MOD: *Bans without investigation*
But hey, you're already an awesome artist without the help of constructive critics, so it's up to you, mate.

Heh - well thanks. I know that my work still has a lot of room for improvement, but when I consider my anatomical studies from 2 years ago, I've come a long way. But should I wish to gain further opinions on what I can do better, I'll keep these sites in mind.

I'm afraid I'm not interested in Dr. Who, so no, I didn't see it. But Christmas hasn't been too bad overall - more than anything else, I think it's just been nice for me not to have to get up at 5:50am or spend 9 hours at work! How about you?
Thanks, Robshi!
Thanks, Robshi!
Heh - no, it's a more direct reference than that. The title is influenced by the 1973 film The Day of the Jackal. But glad to know it was appreciated anyway!
Thanks.
Thanks.
Oooh, awesomely awesome! (yes, redundant, I know. lol). Hehe, wow, Rexar, you did a wonderful job on this pic. I didn't know Anubis was THAT big. lol Nevertheless, it was a great idea and I love you portrayed it. The robes and fur are drawn very well, as are the feet! ;)
Oh yes, and the perspective is top notch! :) Amazing work as usual, Rexar. You art for 2009 ended with a bang! :D

Ah, come now. This is way better than Spurs...
Lol!!
Besides, I think "you think you see the best, then BANG, they surprise you with something altogether more disappointing" has been the way on occasions this season - such inconsistency which has seen you beat Wigan 9-1 but lose at home to Wolves...
...but I support Ipswich, so who am I to mock? Heh!
Thanks for the comment, mate! Nice to hear from you again - I seem to recall you mentioning something football-related in the pipeline? Or have I already seen it and just forgotten about it? (Lol!)

So, RRR, I sooo don't know if you remember me :P but here goes a sincere comment.
Despite I'd name you among the few good macro artists out there with respect to coloring and drawing, I don't like most of your work!.
But this one... this one is awesome!. A theme change at last! :D .
Attention to meaningful detail -- check.
The feet are well done -- check
The face is well done -- check
The eyes are well done -- check
The body in general is correctly made -- check
The image as a whole feels like more than the sum of the parts (aka composition) -- check
Original -- check
Keep up the good work, and I hope at some point you do more work of this type!.
This goes to favs

Heh - depends what you mean by theme change? It is after all still macro and primarily stomping/feet focused.
But in any case, thanks for the comments! Whilst admittedly my anatomical accuracy is rarely anything like 100% (and indeed is still not really quite right in this one either), I do like to think that I show attention to detail in a lot of my work - what made this one more "meaningful" in particular?

There's no dialogue, nothing interrupting our imagination from flying and filling in the blank spaces.
Anubis looks beautiful in his entirety, his face expression doesn't look forced, it's actually quite endearing, you could even imagine he's just "playing".
I like the flow of the image (not all of your pictures "flow"). It starts with the focus point, his foot below (which looks stunning), and slides all the way up to his pleasing face, and I found no point in his body or the whole composition that annoyed me, or ruined it for me. The little people is a good example of attention to detail (but I've seen such attention to detail in many of your drawings).
Given enough scrutiny, one may start to complain about anatomical inconsistencies, but none is so glaring or obvious or grave to substract from the overall awesomeness of this picture.
All those things as a whole made it special for me.

Oh, and with theme change I meant that you made a more generic macro image (one that you can fill in with any background story that you want) instead of focusing in a particular subfetish, like sweaty or smell-loaded feet, or snuff, which you've done in plenty C: and you used a new character instead of your usual self Rexar or someone else. (YES, I know Anubis is only short of Renamon in being made by everybody, but each artist has his/her unique take at him).
