Haha, I'd feel more proud about self-modeling this if I hadn't had to then go in and beef up his arms and chest a whole bunch 9_9
And thanks! I was looking at some Manet portraits, some Renoir, and a little bit of Ashley Wood, and wanted to do something that used paint a bit like they do. This still feels really smooth and slick to me, but it's getting a bit more of the textural roughness and the looseness of paint <3

Haha, oh man! I'm a fan of Schiele's work, for sure, but I don't know how thrilled I'd be to have someone tell me I look like one of his figures <3
His work always has that kind of grotesque edge to it, whereas someone like Klimt manages to do weird, exaggerated figures that still come out as flattering ^_^

That's really true yeah. The reason why I like Schiele's slender bodies aren't so much of the grotesqueness, but the poses and angles themselves. Like you could totally make beautiful poses with your body like that. Kilmt is fabulous with texture and design.
Gives me an artistic boner thinking about bodies like that now. <3

Dachsunds are crazy. One of these days I will take tons of photos of myself contorting my arms in different angular compositional ways.
Also, definitely look at some poppers, and in hip-hop dancers. Phillip Chbeeb, Sallah, Robert Muraine, and Nick & Jeppe are forces to be reckoned with. Phillip especially. Just freeze frame some cool poses from him and you'll get the idea ;D.

Dude your hair looks like that? Bomb, man, bomb! And no worries dude, I self model myself all the time for reference! Everybody is beautiful in their own ways.
I love Manet and Renoir, and I haven't ever really taken a look at Ashley Wood, but I will now. They were true designers of composition and used the canvas space to the fullest effect and separating the shapes in a dynamic way with their colors. I'd love to see more of that, because you're really creating some vibrancy and depth to your paintings now!

I just had a bunch of it hacked off, so now it's just a little stumpy pony-tail, yeah. And yay for self-modeling! It'd be a waste of a willing body otherwise <3
Ashley Wood is an interesting guy, I think. His art can be wild and graphic, but I see a definite influence coming from folks like Manet and Renoir in a lot of his structure and color choices.
Which makes me wonder what it would be like if Manet and Renoir only ever painted robots, zombies, soldiers, and pin-up chicks <3

They'd be blurry hot messes of awesome.
I've been looking at Ashley Wood's stuff the past couple of days, and I think I have a new favorite artist. Man, I love how he makes the figures so sculpted and graphic at the same time! I want to do that with my art!
And short pony-tails are sexiest. I got into them every since I saw Ramza from Final Fantasy Tactics. If it's too long it starts looking androgynous.

Yeah, that sculpted-but-graphic thing is really the heart of what makes Wood's work interesting to me. This piece was also super inspired by him.
Oh maaan, Ramza/Tactics <3 <3 <3
All of Yoshida's designs for Tactics are brilliant, but if we're talking hunkiness, I'd have to go with his work for Vagrant Story, where basically every guy is hunkadelic. They also get bonus points for bizarrely exposing costumes (like Ashley's assless shorts or Rosencrantz's peekaboo chest unitard (and lip piercing???) or Sydney's pants open to the wing-wang).
Really, how did those designs happen?

Dude, your shit is so gorgeous I don't even know what to fucking do with you or even at least say to you.
Tactics in my opinion is my favorite Final Fantasy game of the bunch in terms of story and leveling/job class systems.
And sweet Lord baby Jesus, I have no idea what to even call that but awesome. I dunno how it happens, I guess like uber mastery and experience combined with loose drawings that just fucking make it look mind-numbingly fantastic?

A lot of people really didn't like 12 because of the new combat system, and I haven't played it yet to have a solid opinion of it. But from what I do know, they really worked on the style and texture systems to push the PS2's capabilities as far as they could go, so I'm super impressed by that philosophy.
I love some of the character designs too.
I also enjoyed the Tactics Advanced series, but it still doesn't hold to the original PSX Tactics in the fighting system, although I did appreciate the different job and race classes without an emphasis of keeping members alive and more about following the rules for challenges. The PSP version kind of messed with the dialogue too much for me.

*crawls into a hole and listens to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ifq4bYZnYrc until despondency lightens to melancholy.*
Yeah, I imagine this as more of a "morning after" sort of deal. The breakup itself probably involved a good bit more shouting/crying/gnashing teeth.
And yeah, I figure by noon the next day, chocolab is tossing his hat into the air à la Mary Tyler Moore "you're gonna make it after all," but I suspect kitty here is going to be a big, moist wreck for the rest of the week.

Thanks, dude!
And it's not all on one layer, but I didn't use layers to separate the figure from the background or any of the other elements, either. Basically, I painted all on one layer, but used multiple layers as checkpoints? So like I'd paint until I got somewhere I liked, then make a new layer and keep going on that, so that even if I did something stupid on that, I'd still have the layer(s) underneath it to jump back to. Each of those layers were stacked at 100% opacity using the "Normal" blending mode <3
Hope that helps/makes sense!

"It does not suffice to merely lie beside each other
As those who love each other do.
I picture you rising up in the morning,
Stretching out on your boundless bed,
Beating a clear path to the shower,
Scouring yourself red.
The tap of hangers swaying in the closet,
Unburdened hooks and empty drawers,
And everywhere I tried to love you
Is yours again and only yours."
There is a Joanna Newsom song (and a Burt Bacharach song, no less) for every occasion in your life-- probably, like, 8 suitable for breakups.

Haha, I can't decide if listening to Joanna is any more or less gay than listening to Barbra. A different flavor of gay to be sure, but still.
Also, all of Have One On Me is so good, wtf. She really is a lovely poet. Back in "En Gallop," she admonished us never to get so attached to a poem that we forget truth that lacks lyricism, but she manages to put across a lot of universally relatable stuff with lyrical flair to spare <3

Haha, I already painted my nod to Karen Carpenter <3
(Or at least joked about it in the tags, haha.)

The best explanation I can give you is this http://www.listology.com/user/115428/content I have made a gigantic butt-ton of lists about music... So, yeah... I listen to a whole damn lot of things.
How about you?
How about you?
No that is wonderful.
Pavement are hella-overrated.
I mean they're sorta cute music but nothing special.
And I was just saying that because Pitchfork rated Gold Soundz to be the best 90s song and I was just shocked and just about yelled at my computer "are you people REALLY THAT BLAND?"

Yeah, I think kitty here took it a bit harder than the lab... But then, I guess one of the realities of relationships and their ends is that one person almost always wants it more than the other.
But yes! The experience will improve and sustain him, for sure. Just like a nice fried egg <3

Hmm, it really varies from piece to piece, but I'd say around 8~10 hours is probably about average? Pieces with linework in them take me longer, and pieces where I go into more detail (like the stuff I've done for book covers) also takes more time, obviously.
I've happily sped up a bit in the last year or two, and I hope to continue to get faster. I know there are pros out there who knock out speed paintings that look like this piece in like a half-hour 9_9 It all comes with time and practice <3
But yeah, all that said, I try not to worry about my pace too much -- the piece comes together when it comes together. I'm happy to be patient and give it the time it needs ^_^

Thanks for the kind words and thoughtful reply! I'm glad to hear that the image resonates on some level.
I think you're absolutely right to say that furry is a genre/subculture/community/fetish/etc. of extremes, and that probably accounts for a lot of its draw. The world and characters explored here manage to be more vibrant and more action-packed and just generally more than reality ever could be. But I feel like that whimsy and fantasy feels more solid and fully realized and believable when it's paired with bits and pieces of the everyday and the normal and the human. I really enjoy creating little snapshots from these characters' lives <3

I love this image. Its an everyday thing, something done alone. You portray the introspection and retrospection going on in the character's mind without even showing us all of his face. This moment you've managed to capture occurs with any loss, not just break ups. I can't count how many times I would be stopped dead in the process of my daily life by little things whose significance would blow me away or would suddenly correspond with song lyrics I have listened to for years but they just took on a whole new meaning.
On a side note, your character doesn't look lanky to me, he looks believable, not one of the disproportional, highly idealized forms which have come to prevade the furry genre.
As for some people's complaints about the perspective, I think its because it gives the appearance of one point perspective, when you know you're looking into a corner, so it should actually be two. There's just nothing on the right side of the drawing to provide that second point.

I'm glad it resonated with you ^_^ And as far as body types go, I try to spread the love around as best I can. Little skinny guys and big chub muffins and lanky dudes and guys with big guns like this lion all have a place in my heart <3
And wow, I see what you mean about the perspective. I actually totally didn't intend for that to be the corner of the room -- I imagine the wall being recessed to accommodate the sink and appliances and cabinets, then to continue flush with them until the actual corner of the room (which is off-screen further to the right). So the corner you see to the lion's right is actually convex, not concave. The other corner (at the back of the cabinets/countertop) is totally blocked by the lion, though, so that really isn't at all obvious 9_9 Whoops!

There is much awesome in your gallery, but this especially. I love the stance and posture, so much expression of the weight, and the way he holds that egg ... I think i especially like the hands. The egg in one hand, the frying pan in the other and how they show the difference in how he should hold each. Nicely done.
Thanks, dude!
I knew I wanted to put a lot of expression/emotion into the pose on this one because the face is in profile and I wanted to keep the lion's features more realistic and less exaggerated/caricaturish, so just relying on the face wasn't really an option. So I posed for a few shots in the mirror and used those for reference ^_^

LOOK AT THOSE HANDS. And the drapery in this piece is so freaking awesome. This air of gloom, and like this glimpse what could have been in the egg and that sort of drab apathy that follows a break up because of all those raw emotions bouncing around. His face looks pretty much like an oil painting. And is that a year on his upper cheek or is that just a facial marking? This piece has a lot of raw emotion in it, thanks for sharing.
For sure! And as far as I'm concerned, he's not crying (yet, anyway) -- those are just his facial markings. That said, it's a picture, which means it's open to interpretation ^_^
I pulled the egg literally from the song lyrics, but as a bit of symbolism, it does work nicely with the breakup theme. As you say, it's a symbol of potential and promise that he's literally about to dash to pieces and chuck into a hot pan. Your guess is as good as mine as to whether Bacharach was thinking of that when he wrote the song!
As far as the technical stuff goes, I generally like how this piece turned out. The hands and overall pose benefited greatly from me actually modeling out the pose in the mirror (sans egg 9_9), and the oil-painterly feel came from staring at a couple of Manet paintings for hours on end while I was working on this <3

I know how that goes, using yourself as a model. I have done that for a few pictures myself. Beefing up the model some? Thats a shame, but sometimes neccessary. Can't be revealing too much of yourself in your art? Or maybe just idealizing yourself?
Really the most beautiful part of this painting is his face and the work you put into it totally shows. If you look at the painting there is a difference in detail. Most of it is not too noticable, I mean, the level of detail is consistent. Yet with the face you pour it all out. Especially in the color difference. You use more whites, the face is much cooler than the body. Damn that face is so tragic though. That heaviness that comes from extreme emotion.
I like the elbows too. Just the way you make the fur tuft out. The background reminds me of a Hopper sort of color scheme. Muted but vibrant. Ear placement is interesting too. Never thought of putting the ears where they are in the human anatomy. Always refered more to animal anatomy with that. I don't feel very qualified to critique your work, honestly. I can see a few anatomical concerns but your skill level is so great it would be like pointing out dust in your eye when I got a stick in my own. It seems like your painting frames the face. I am kind of ambivalent with his shit but I think it works well with the theme of mourning/morning (heheh).

Naw, I like my body just fine It's just that lanky isn't the only body type in town, and as an artist I try to push myself to paint different body types. I've drawn skinny guys and more muscular guys and tubby guys, and I learn more about human anatomy and how to draw it every time I do.
Also, I should point out that this picture isn't autobiographical at all. The lion isn't me. I'm not going through a breakup here -- I'm not even sad <3 I was just listening to some music and got the idea for a pair of post-breakup kitchen shots and ran with the idea. The dog I drew as shorter and skinny and more feminine, and the lion is taller and beefier. I picked their builds to correspond with (or contrast with) their personalities as I envisioned them. The lion was kind of a macho tough guy in my head, the type to be stoic and put on a show of bravado in the face of his breakup. This one moment before he breaks the egg, the mask falls away and we see how upset he really is over it. Based on that personality profile, I figured he'd probably be the type to spend a good bit of time in the gym, both for vanity reasons and to sublimate his emotions through physical exercise.
I definitely spent the most time on the face, yeah. I figured with a subtle emotional piece like this one, a lot of the force of the image would come from his expression, so I really wanted to get it right. The rest of the picture is kind of just there to provide context for that. Ideally, I would have worked that kind of detail in everywhere, but with finite time to paint, I had to draw the line at some point ^_^
Hopper is great! I'm definitely a fan. The whole "sad person in their kitchen" thing feels pretty Hopperesque, really. He was good with / obsessed with quiet moments of desolation, haha.
The ear placement is actually true to lion anatomy. I used photo reference for the head, and while I obviously tweaked the expression, the basic skull structure should be pretty realistic. That said, with the skull riding on a human body, a lot of the back of the head ~ neck winds up looking pretty different.
Critique is always welcome -- my anatomy is far from perfect, and I can't improve on it if I don't notice what's wrong. So long as folks are respectful in the way they point out the flaws in my work, I'm always happy to hear about them!

Thanks to you I am no officially hooked on One Less Bell! The Glee cover and the original by %th Dimension both sound nice. The piece you made is really wonderful, I keep looking back at it and now I can't help but favorite it (I wish I could favorite your whole gallery ahah). I like the mood, it's quiet and mellow, yet the lion is very depressed, and I can feel it. Very nice :)
I think the Fifth Dimension version is a cover, too, actually! Burt Bacharach wrote it in 1967 for Keely Smith, then the Fifth Dimension picked it up for their 1970 debut album. Rosemary Clooney also did a version back in 1968, and Barbra Streisand put together the medley version (with another Bacharach song, A House Is Not A Home) in 1971 that the Glee folks later covered. 1972 saw two more covers, from Dionne Warwick and Shirley Bassey!
So yeah, a lot of really big names have done versions -- it's fun going back and listening to each artist's different spin on the same song ^_^
And thanks! Yeah, I wanted to capture the quietness, I think. The silence of no one else being there is a pretty jarring thing at first, I think <3

Going throught a heartbreak, and there's seriously NOTHING that can get me on better thoughts right now. I can relate to this </3
This is beautifully done! It's so natural and easy to realte to, It have his "aura" of calm and yet the characters heart must be in total sad chaos. The feeling is grey, sad and heavy, just as any period of heartbreak is.
APPROVAL!
