Anrisil was originally made as an explanation for why Nathanriel isn't good at magic beyond just being raised by a lesser demon race. But when considering all of the things regarding what the Merchant's Guild was doing they would naturally try and use it as another measure of control. But all of the stories in the Esana Trilogy have this one really strange relationship with the Merchant's Guild. Like every story has the characters using the Merchant's Guild stores as there really isn't any alternative. They don't even hesitate about it. And yet they all seem to acknowledge that they're kind of evil. I guess you could consider them an equivalent to our big tech companies RL. Everyone knows that they're practically evil incarnate that wants to control everything and enslave everyone to their will regardless of how genuine they started but everyone uses them anyway. And yet, at the same time the Merchant's Guild is not the main villain in any of the stories or games I have for Esana.
Granted, in Nathanriel's Fate AnAnonymousFox, Ukeiuwa and White Fox are all actively trying to weaken the Merchant's Guild, trying to cripple them as much as possible before the next big war twenty years after this one is done. But Nathanriel's group never goes up against the Merchant's Guild at all in this story. Then in Ukeiuwa's Destiny the story is about them ending the Great War all those years in the past, which the Merchant's Guild was not responsible, though they did benefit from. AnAnonymousFox's Path is about her coming to terms with the role she's supposed to be playing in destiny. But her antagonists are not the Merchant's Guild, but Erick, Daniel and the Celestials Fate, Death and Seraph.
Then we have the games of Esana Journey (60 years before Ukeiuwa's Destiny) which is AnAnonymousFox's first adventure to try and help pick up the pieces for their race after the Enslavement ended, to which their main villains are those who are still trying to exterminate their race while weakened. But these are unrelated to the Merchant's Guild. In Esana Corruption (20 years after Ukeiuwa's Destiny) which is White Fox's first adventure as he helps a group of mostly humans get to the bottom of an issue caused by an organization of humans that wanted to try and obtain the power of the demons so that they could be major players. And that group is the predecessor to the Demon Hunters. And then finally we have Esana Rift (Starts around 50 years before Nathanriel's Fate but spans the entirety of time) and though you do have the option at some point of completely destroying the Merchant's Guild before it even starts it's actually about uncovering an experiment that took place a couple hundred years before the Merchant's Guild was formed.
So yeah, everyone be all "Yeah, they're evil and will want to take over the world eventually, but they're the best place to get a shiny new sword and we got bigger fish to fry for now."
