One of the things I had actually done when going through the first pass of Nathanriel's Fate is actually go and write out a base spell list that went to five tiers. And then also tied this to the demon tier. The highest level spell an ordinary human like Claden could ever reach were tier 2. Human mages went through something to make them more like Lesser Demons like Angylia that can potentially get up to tier 3 spells. Full demons like Kresta and Bob can potentially reach tier 4 spells. And Greater Demons like Nathanriel could theoretically reach Tier 5 spells. And then beyond that we have the Celestials (Fate, Death, Seraph and Nephilim) and the Demi-Celestials (White Fox, AnAnonymousFox, Ukeiuwa) are actually able to dip into Divine spells, which is effectively tier 6 on steroids. Ion Shift was the Tier 2 Electric Element spell (so effectively the equivalent to Thundara).

There are also different levels of how to cast. Most basic is an incantation and gestures. Then just the full incantation. The an abridged incantation. Then just saying the spell name. And then the Redux version actually went beyond that so that when skilled enough you can even just cast the spell without any verbal or somatic component. As well as opening it up for much more varied uses or even just basic, like demons just enhancing all attacks with an element. Not only that, I also went about going on and making a decision about how spells work when imperfect or even mastered. Tl;dr, I spent way too much time on the world building of this story.
