Well, none of them are really villains. They try to be villains and fail in doing so if you don't follow the bad ending. We'll see if Disgaea 4 follows the trend or not.

and yeah, they definitely usually reform by the end of the game, unless you're purposely a dick to get the bad endings XD

I'm curious as what role Laharl will have in Disgaea 4. He's always a dick to get more screen time.

One thing I never really understood is why Etna and Flonne appear in more games than Laharl when I'm pretty sure Laharl has a bigger fanbase. Then again, none of the character can beat the Prinnies in tern of the size of the fanbase. At Anime Expo '08, somebody asked the lead character designer, "What the hell were you on when you came up with the idea of the Prinnies and where can I get some?" or something like that and the guy actually answered. XD

The main characters are from the underworld, basically, and stuff normally seen as negative give you bonuses (Example: Committing the game universes's version of "felonies"* will give you an exp gain bonus).

*Granted, felonies are usually silly things like "doing too much damage in one hit", but the point stands.

The worlds of the disgaea games are all netherworlds. Populated by demons so evil is good and good is bad as far as they are concerned, for instance in the third one the main character is the top student because he never attends class etc.
