If you've read a lot of my works thus far you can probably tell I'm kind of against that notion that a physical transformation would instantly transfer the information on how to use that new form completely. So the need to learn how to walk, how to use magic, etc. Could have done need to talk but figured that'd be a bit too extreme. Also really enjoy the notion of the inner spirit that is their main essence being extremely judgemental about everything you're doing.
Haven't yet figured out if this is something that will be explained in the story or if it'll be "lore for the sake of lore" which is usually discouraged. So I'll just say it now here as it isn't something that's too big of a reveal, just more a matter of if it would serve the story for this to be explained in the book. But there's a reason why there's only one of each, which is that they were designed to be. Basically way back in the middle ages all of the mythological creatures existed and magic was real throughout the entire world. They had a council and as an agreement would each have one arbiter. The arbiters can take the form of any of the others provided they meet the standards of that race. Each race was allowed one arbiter and when that arbiter died, their soul would pass on to another and that would become that race's new arbiter. The essence is the soul of that race's arbiter. But plot-wise there was a prophesy that said that they all needed to seal away all magic for a while and so the human arbiter sacrificed himself to allow this to happen, which is why they can all become human without restriction, that the human form is there, but there is no more soul of the human arbiter to restrict who has access to it. As you can expect, eventually this seal has broken before the story has gotten but I cannot say why yet because that would be a spoiler.
