We have a few things happening this time. Things are progressing nicely with a new house obtained. Cheryl is a little upset at seeing her quiet hometown looking like the battleground of an epic fantasy war in the shadows while nobody else seems to be concerned about it. Ms. Brown is feeling the strain on her trust, she knows something is happening that she's not being told about, but she wants to trust her employee James. Princess has another breakdown and gets an improptu therapy session. And elsewhere, a meeting occurs...
Man, you'd think this was an ad for cotton swabs, because people need to clean out their ears, huh? I'm a sucker for a running joke, I can't help it. The first time was to be attention-catching, the second time was a callback, the rest were because it was too amusing to resist. Also, can you really trust someone named Jared? Especially when he used to be your childhood bully? Dang it, Ro, you had one job, pass along the message! Oh well, I'm sure there will be no repercussions to such a mistake, right? I'm also a sucker for mundane utility of magic, like supplementing the air conditioner with that spell Tola devised a while back. If only I could get that to work in real life...
This chapter is a palendromic 6446 words, or the 17th-longest chapter so far. 6500 is my usual "target", though the average is still at 7116 because of a few longer-than-usual chapters (Looking at you, Chapter 3). Even though that's my "target", I still feel like it's short, but I don't want to just add unnecessary padding. Maybe I could've done more with the therapy section, but it was already getting a bit long and my internet connection was making it difficult to work with Google Docs. I was getting tempted to switch to an offline word processor! Total word counts aren't very milestone-y, at 177,897 for the series and 73,086 for Book 2. We are a quarter of the way to 100 chapters, though? (I really, really doubt I'll hit 100 chapters, though.)

Poor Princess needs so much therapy... Anxiety pours pressure like water into a cup. At least she has someone to help her when it starts to spill over the edge, and hopefully over time she can get anxiety to stop pouring so much onto her. Sometimes the bad thoughts just get too loud to ignore, though.
Jared really fell in with the wrong crowd. But to his credit, I don't know if I'd have been able to pass up a chance to learn Actual Magic, just telling myself I gotta put up with this dude who's a dick for a bit and I'll get what I need. Unfortunately for Jared, Augustine is a total jerk who basically keeps minions under his thumb by dangling stuff over their heads, but not actually GIVING it to them since that'd remove his ability to control them. He taught Jared one single rune for fire to get him hooked, but is keeping the rest held back. (Mostly because Augustine doesn't really have too much to work with, so if he gives up all his secrets, there goes his control.)
To be fair, it's also pretty rare to be able to find an Earth-born native with as much natural power as Jared, though.
