“What would be the point, though?” Maria asks, stopping on her running after a moment more. “I can’t harm a dark type, there’s no point in learning how to fight against what I cannot hurt. I should just accept defeat if I went against a dark type.”

“And if your opponent in that last round had that mentality he would have never won. No, you have to think of every encounter as something to overcome. You must realize your own weaknesses and move around them. Only then can you reliably take the top spots. And you’re wrong, only psychic type moves cannot harm a dark type. But you have at your disposal a grass type and an electric type move. A ghost type too if you want to be technical, but that isn’t effective. If you’re up against a dark type, just use those while avoiding your attacks. Your opponent knew he couldn’t beat you straight on, so he focused on dodging you and expecting you to aim where he is so that you’d create an opening for him to attack.”

I jump up a ways ahead and then turn around. “On that note, let’s play a little game for practice. Your job is to just catch me and pick me up. And I’m going to do everything in my power to avoid being grabbed. You have to learn how to anticipate how I move.”
