When I ran across the Conet Project, I knew it was going to be great fodder for a sound collage. The set is recordings of "number stations", mysterious shortwave stations that broadcast numbers and other information primarily for espionage.

I had originally thought to use a song  chipuni had provided on one of his annual CD samplers, but I discovered if I took a recording of a polytone and run it through various effects, such as echo and wah-wah, it turned into a hypnotic base. Over that, I layered looped sounds (along with a few 70's telephone recordings). It works best if you listen with headphones.
