TF drive page 3: Confidence in Institutions Eroded
Again, no embellishment on the dialogue. Those children's books that taught me I could always ask the friendly neighborhood policeman for directions, they LIED to me!
This question was particularly important because,
1. at my old school, the north wing didn't connect to the south wing, so taking the wrong stairwell could very well leave you stuck, and
2. I was looking for some reassurance that, at least, the officer would recognize someone never-before-seen in this place as such.
The officer was actually placing his bets via SMS by this point, but I thought that was too hard to convey in a single panel. The officer's design is based on Officer Konstantin from Shaenon Garrity's Project Skin Horse (because I couldn't get a good reference similar enough to the real one).
I still wonder how these kinds of people end up in these kinds of jobs.

"My job is to take out my personal frustrations by yelling, harassing and beating up people"
- I'm just reflecting my worst stereotypes from the news. Our police are reasonable, but stretched thin
There are bad apples even in most well-meaning professions. In some places very low entry bar doesn't prevent impassive bastards lining for solid pay with minimal effort, and ability to move their duties/blame towards other department - like with stolen bicycles; yeah, it's filed. Better cry about it to your insurance company, pal (glad mine's never been stolen)

I actually had had rather good interactions with the police up until that point. One from this precinct had helped redirect traffic around us when our radiator overheated earlier that year.
When my bicycle was stolen, years later, I filed for the sole reason of the university having bragged about their low bike theft numbers just last week. The officer laughed in my face when I told him how cheaply I'd gotten the bike for.
It wasn't insured, I wasn't expecting to get it back, but that laugh hurt

Sorry to hear that, demeaning crime victims is just mean. Luckily it sounds to be more positive experience overall with the popo
My cheapest bikes have been 50€ or £20, like those ones getting lost isn't too awful either, but I wouldn't want to be forced to pay that with every drunken joyrider filled weekend. I love the fact our city recently started e-bicycle renting for free 30 min ride per use. No more worrying own bike being stolen!
But with police, my real experience has only been with weekend morning's drunk driving checkups. Always met with polite and brightly chatty officers. Too bad smaller thefts and crimes regardless seem to left unsolved too often. At least they fine morning drunks
