Wait, did Virmir sense it, or took advantage of the story? Granted, it was hinted that fae don’t get along with dragons, but it’s unlikely the fae would allow a potential scenario that could endanger Virmir, let alone themselves.
That said, Virmir’s plan to pit the fae against the dragons is bold, but effective. Either the dragons eliminate the fae, or the fae cancel the contract to save themselves from the dragons. Since it doesn’t directly conflict with Virmir’s contract, the contract can’t stop or control Virmir.

Virmir cannot resist the story or he will be forced to conform. And he can't just play along or he will be absorbed into the story and become another NPC. The only way out is to become the narrator. Then he can control the story, and in so doing make enough trouble that the fae release him from his contract. And in the meantime, he gets some very amusing satisfaction in the problems he makes for them.
As we've seen previously, Virmir understood than as long he stain in-bound of his role he can retcon the story in whatever direction he want. With the first instance beeing he said the prince would be away for month, and sure enought right after he bid his farewell.
What I anticipated and got it wrong, and problably many others, was Virmir would had sent the kingdom through a bloody conquest war, not on the defense of an invasion.
