Note the difference in Brand's and Saida-hime's reactions. To Brand, this is, "When did he become a dragon?" To Saida, these may have been quetz she grew up with, and she got to hear that one's final screams.
One does not FAFO with old gods. Their idea of amusing is going to ruin your day.
Did I mention, "Sometimes fear is the appropriate response?"

Poor Saida, even though the body swap is disorienting in moments like this, Brand did his best to shield her eyes and ears.
Brand may not particularly like quetz in general, but that’s no reason to subject Saida to seeing something that traumatic.
Still, is Brand really going to help Suzocon? Even if his life was at risk, it doesn’t feel right to help the one who killed the two guards that were trying to protect “Saida”. At least, I hope they can stall until they save Roko before his “sense of self” disappears, or the Queen herself comes.

At this stage there was zero chance of escape. They'd never have the time to find Roko and beat it before Monster Fox found them.
They need a distraction. And one might just be on the way. Think Vetra is going to just ignore that three of her personal bodyguard went to that island and never came back?

I think that Vetra is going to be on her way very, very shortly. That was effectively her personal bodyguard Suzocon-sama eliminated and she will NOT be happy when she finds out.
When she sees he has her Eyestone, that's when it all goes nuclear. I think the reason Suzocon killed those guards is because they saw he had that Eyestone.

Kinda what I said before the page posted. He's a dragon. This is what volcano dragons do with those they want to dispose of. It nearly happened to Saida herself, before Brand rescued her!
He's really not happy that they're dealing with something with less morality than a volcano dragon, but that's nothing compared to how shocking this is to Saida.

?????????????????? - Saida is scared out of her wits by Suzocon's actions. Most creatures would faint upon seeing this, some may have a heart attack, others would flee, some would return fire at Suzocon, and some would outright die on the spot by seeing Suzocon's actions.
I feel like there is a rule somewhere in here.
Granted Suzocon is a very god tier kinda guy, and could just be catlike playing because recluse on an island might be a tad bored and it'd be fun to stretch the muscles.
But.
He tried pretty aggressive subterfuge with the first one, when he got found, and it's clear that he both didn't want to be interrupted and has the power to get rid of them quickly. But he waited until the first one tried to zap him before disintegrating.
So that's not so crazy, but then he's just all super diplomatic with the next two, who have clearly seen their comrade fall apart. So he knows they're not just gonna: 'Oh, sorry to bother you, we didn't know this was your island', and then wander off without reporting to the Queen what they've seen. Then he waits until both of them each try to lightning strike him before engaging, and then he's super pleased when they do.
Yes, he's super-propersune until the moment he's not, and it could be a separate agreement with the Quetz that he won't attack any of them without cause, but maybe there is some kind of -rule- beyond a personal code, that doesn't allow him to wield all this power directly at anyone he chooses whenever he wants, and instead has to use subterfuge, magic mirrors, threats, and puppets unless he's directly attacked.
So, not that they'd know it, and it'd be crazy to risk putting it to the test, but at this moment Brand and Saida might be able to actually just walk over to the eye, pick it up, and leave, and Suzocon couldn't do anything about it.
Course, he also does have a hostage.

This is my take on it, based on Virmir's stories and how they interact with Shinto lore.
Suzocon-sama still has some zenko-kitsune - noble fox - in him. He wishes to gain his ninth tail in a traditional way.
But at this point it's all an act. He's a nogitsune to the core. If they dared try and steal the Eyestone right in front of him there would be no mercy. He treats ANYTHING that gets in the way of his plans as obstacles to BURN out of his way.
Do remember he possibly murdered an innocent that washed up on his shores, defiled her body in a truly hideous way and tricked ONE OF HIS OWN CLAN, a kohai, into an Infinity Trap to mindrape him into a blank slate.
He's no zenko-kitsune. He's an honorless dog that plays at being one to lure in victims.

He proved he could. Just the idea that they might be possibly there to interfere with his plans was enough to bring out the uzumaki and threaten them all with instant death. Heck, he did it when he thought Roko was being rude to him. And as we just saw, that was no bluff. He kills when it suits him. They're only still alive because he sees a use for them.
This look cast aside all doubt: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/59558091.
That predatory smile is pure, undiluted Nogitsune. That's the moment that Green Guy realized - the LAST thing he realized - was that he was in the grip not of an honorable opponent but a monster. And then the jaws came down.

He tried. Instead of being allowed honorable retreat, Suzocon ate him. He effectively tortured that guard to death, and is busy torturing one of his own clan into insanity, just to delay the inevitable.
When Vetra shows up, I'm rooting for injuries. Eating one of her bodyguard and defiling the body of another is an absolutely nuclear insult and she'll take it exactly as such.
Heck if I were her, and realized that the vanguard I sent out never came back, I'd be back with Taran-ouji and the entire quetz army. She has to know this dude from the past.

I'm not saying there is any honor here, but more of a restriction. The way a vampire can't just come into your house without permission. Supernatural types frequently have weird little rules, and I'm speculating something like that might be in play.
By the point he was running the guard had already attacked him. So, fights on, as it were.
Roko was not directly attacked via his power. Suzocon just tricked him into looking into a mirror.
Suzocon is pretty smart, and I'm sure he's got plan B, C, and D in motion. And if this is a reality I'm sure he's very used to working around it. He's offered Brand the carrot and he's just shown him the stick.
Threats and intimidation work, but only until you press to test them. But it's a heck of a gamble with a very final result if one navigates the boundaries incorrectly. Lets see what Brand is gonna do.

I didn't think he was. The way the last panel of the last page looked to me was that Suzocon started at the tail and the last panel is just the Quetz's head sticking out of his mouth. Then this page starts with him screaming and then that's it.
Either way it went pretty hard for the guard and Saida is probably not gonna take it well.

You might well be right. Eating him tail first would certainly amp up the horror - and the pain. Also, would maximize the screaming until Suzocon-sama's jaws cut him off for good - one way or another.

Yep. She took Suzucon-sama's hospitality at face value and frankly so did a lot of commenters. He put on a very good act at being a Noble Fox, and it's quite probable he once WAS a zenko-kitsune. But take a good look at that expression he gives Green Guy before the jaws come down. That's pure, undiluted nogitsune. Wild Fox. He's nothing more than an amoral monster, playacting at being civilized.
I said they were in very deep shit the moment they set foot on his island, and nothing has dissuaded me from that since.

Indeed indeed, and yes, he clearly took such smug satisfaction and pleasure in the power he held over them, making them fear and beg for their life before brutally finishing them off...
"He's nothing more than an amoral monster, playacting at being civilized." Was definitely made clear with what he did to poor Roko, no care concern for his fellow kitsune, erasing his personality by mentally breaking him, all for the sake of an experiment to further his own goals... (and thinking about it I can't help but wonder now how many other victims he might have had over the years, to have gained as many tails as he did...)
This would most definitely seem to be the case, and with how powerful he is it's hard to say how they'll be getting out of this, not to mention they still need to save Roko

I definitely agree, it seems like their only real hope of escaping from someone so powerful, not to mention how some of their previous 'fights' have gone (with Darya they simply fled from her army, and with Ayal they got lucky as he unknowingly doomed himself), and I definitely expected Taran to show up earlier with that approaching storm.
Though in the most recent pages we got to see firsthand that a few quetz soldiers stand no chance against Suzucon, but their leaders and/or army may keep him busy enough for them to escape (...and I also just realized now that they don't really have a means to leave the island, seeing as how they've lost their ability to swim, only two of them can really fly, and they don't know how far the mainland is, plus ocean travel puts them at risk of running into Draya again... potentially they'll need to trick some quetz soldiers into escorting them to safety)

They do have the pendants that allow them to shift to aquatic form. They might take that route and head out into the deep blue sea, or they might end up on Laputa with the quetz. The latter doesn't get them out of danger, but at least it gets them on solid ground and the hell AWAY from Suzocon.
Eating one of her guards was as good as declaring war on Vetra and the whole quetz nation. He has to know that, and probably wants Brand to finish charging the Eyestone before she shows up.

Those aquatic form TF pendants are in Roko's charm. Who knows what Suzocon has done with that. I'm sure he would consider it a little valuable to at least look through or put somewhere away from the balloon body. So until they rescue Roko and find his charm, they really are stuck there. I had forgotten about that.
Yeah that's a point. Without his hoshi no tama Roko's basically sunk. They have to get his spirit back, reunite it with his balloon body, AND reunite THAT with his Star Ball.
Root for an Andy Bowen v Jack Burke match when Vetra and her crew show up to exact vengeance and/or get her Eyestone back. If there's one thing that kaibutsu kitsune needs, it's having his whole eight-tailed ass kicked.

He isn't technically an Oni - those are humanoid, but twisted. But you are dead on that he's a yako-kitsune (Field Fox) or a nogitsune (Wild Fox). These are very, very unfriendly nature spirits not unlike evil fairies. Some of them are immensely powerful - one was said to cause a Japanese civil war in ancient times, bring down a dynasty, and curse a rock to kill anyone that touched it. That was one kitsune. Suzocon puts on a good act at being a zenko-kitsune - a Noble Fox - but he's absolutely not.
