Caddie snickered. "That was better than I'd thought it would be."
Gabby, meanwhile, was outright laughing. "That look on his face — he was so confused!"
The two of them sat there for a minute as the laughter died down.
"So, what next?" Gabby asked, wiping away a tear.
"I was actually thinking we could take a little flight around the city. You think you're up for that?"
"Yeah, actually! Let's have a tour!"
Caddie readied himself for take-off, then glanced at Gabby, who did the same. They shared a smirk, then burst into the air, and began to head into the city.
Heading southeast, the first thing they passed was the Redfoxx Library. Gabby could remember spending half of her summer vacation there one year, just reading up on anything space-related that she could comprehend. And Caddie recalled when the library was first built — his mom made him attend the ceremony, and it was so boring that he never wanted to go there again. Of course, he eventually grew past that, and it became a good spot to hang out with Aly.
After passing a grocery store, they came upon the Stadium Cinema. Caddie immediately remembered the time he and his uncle went to see Star Wars together, and Gabby remembered eating so much popcorn that she got sick.
Passing a neighborhood, they found a vineyard that Caddie had never seen before. Gabby had been there once, and the two ladies that ran the place seemed nice, but her father seemingly didn't like the vibes of the place, so they never revisited.
Stopping atop a nursing center to briefly rest, they decided to begin heading southwest. After flying over a lot of houses, they eventually reached Redfoxx Park. Three baseball diamonds at different angles preceded a boat-launch directly into Clearwater Lake. Caddie remembered watching his brother play softball during the summer, while Gabby recalled riding her bike across the parking lot to test out her second prosthetic.
Now flying south along the lakeside, they passed a lumber mill, several trailer homes, and resorts, before they landed atop an old warehouse atop a hill. From here, they could see Gabby's house atop a nearby ridge, as well as the small neighborhood that Caddie, Alyssa, and Agni all lived in.
"You alright, Gabby?" Caddie asked, somewhat winded.
Gabby didn't respond; she was lying flat on her back, trying to catch her breath.
"Yeah, I think we overestimated our abilities a little. Let's call Alyssa, and see if she can come pick us up."
Alyssa, meanwhile, was having her own problems.
"What just happened?" Rich asked, staring down at the bobcat in front of him.
"I accidentally messed up the spell, causing it to backfire onto me," Alyssa replied, taking inventory on herself.
"Well, how do we undo it?" Dennis asked.
"I don't think we can - it's a two-person spell, and I can't feel my magic right now." To emphasize her point, she held out a forepaw and concentrated. After a moment of nothing happening, she brought it back down again. "See?"
Rich glanced up at the fair-goers still standing at the booth, then smiled politely. "We're sorry, but this booth will be temporarily closed. Have a good night!" With that, he pulled the booth's curtains closed so they could have some privacy.
Dennis, meanwhile, had picked up Alyssa and moved her to sit atop a crate so they could be near eye-level. "Could we maybe get another spellcaster from a different booth to help us?"
"I don't think that's a good idea; they wouldn't know how we were casting the spell, so they could mess it up even further."
"So, what, are you just stuck like this?"
"At least until it wears off," Alyssa sighed.
"And how long will that be?" Rich raised an eyebrow.
Alyssa shrugged — well, she did the closest thing to a shrug that her new body would allow. "We were making the spell with a few hours in mind, so probably that? A day at most, really."
The sound of a J-pop song interrupted their conversation. Alyssa immediately recognized it as her ringtone for Gabby, and instinctively reached for her pocket, but instead found her paw meeting her fur. Dennis traced the sound to Alyssa's jacket pocket, took out the phone, and set it onto the crate for Alyssa to answer.
"Talk to me."
Caddie's voice was the one that replied. "Hey, Aly. Looks like we overestimated our capabilities, and now, we're kinda stranded atop Miller Warehouse. Could you, perhaps, come pick us up?"
"I'd love to, but I'm not exactly in a fit state to do that right now."
"Lemme guess: another one of your spells backfired?"
"To be fair to me, it took a full minute to mess up this time."
"Oh wow, we're really improving!" Alyssa could detect the sarcasm dripping from Caddie's voice. "What are you now?"
"A bobcat."
"Yeah, that sounds about right."
They both shared a dry chuckle at their shared misfortune.
"Alright, well," Caddie continued, "hope everything works out on your end, but we're gonna need to figure something else out."
"What about Agni; do you know where he wandered off to?"
"Yeah, it looked like some sort of eating contest. Lex was there, too, so I think he'll be busy for the rest of the night at least."
"Ah, well, can't say I didn't try. Hope you figure something out, and I'll talk to you later."
"See ya." With that, Caddie hung up the phone. Alyssa looked back up at Rich and Dennis, who had been unsuccessful in avoiding eavesdropping.
"So, uh," Dennis began, "you're that prone to magical accidents, huh?"
"I've been improving!" Alyssa defended.
"Twenty minutes until we begin!" Rachel called out to the competitors. Most of them had already been seated, but the last was only just arriving.
"Cojones, Cirrus is here...." Lex groaned as soon as he saw who just sat down across from them, causing Agni to look up from his phone. It was a bat, no older than 30 if he had to guess. Her sky-blue fur contrasted her yellow-orange hair, she had a red handbag that matched her skirt and her glasses, and she wore a stained white crop top that read 'Hungry as a Heifer'. She was also noticeably thin, though Agni suspected that was on purpose.
"What about her?" Agni asked.
Jamie explained, "She's the one that always beats Lex."
"Don't let her looks deceive you!" Lex defended. "She's one of the most serious competitors I've ever seen."
Agni glanced back at Cirrus, who had spotted them and was now waving enthusiastically. "If you say so," he replied.
"Hey, Lex!" Cirrus called out, getting up to approach them. "So glad to see you back again; maybe luck will be on your side this year?"
"Sure hope so," Lex gritted his teeth, shaking her wing with his tail.
As she sat back down, Agni raised an eyebrow and turned to Lex, who looked utterly unamused. "Last year," Lex explained, "I got unlucky with the pies' effects, and swelled until I threw up."
"Held out as long as you could, too," Jamie piped in. "You were almost the size of a school bus by the time you gave, right?"
"Oh, it felt much bigger than that; I felt like the pie tins were going to start orbiting me!"
The two of them laughed at this shared memory, while Agni started sweating as the thought of what he'd gotten himself into finally sank in.
