September 22nd - World Rhino Day
From the International Rhino Foundation:
"On World Rhino Day, we’re working to call attention to the plight facing the world’s rhinos. Rhinos in Africa and Asia are facing a battle for survival, with the situation in Africa particularly dire. This year, more than 285 rhinos have been lost to poaching in South Africa alone – experts predict that more than 475 animals will be killed by the end of the year. No more than 27,000 rhinos are left on Earth. "
Read more HERE.
Rhinos are among my favorite animals, and it absolutely breaks my heart to know they are still being hunted for their horns. Rhino horns fetch a price nearly twice that of gold, yet they are made out of the same protein as your fingernails.
Not too happy with the drawing itself (rhino anatomy is hard to get down) but I really wanted to do something for today. Hopefully I'll find the time to draw more rhinos, as I love them so ;n;

Rhinos are really great ;n; I've always liked them, but after seeing them in person at the San Diego Zoo I was like "Okay, these guys are the best." SUCH CUTE FEET N' LIPS.
And yeah it's... depressing, to say the least. Like, when I first heard about ivory/horn poaching as a kid I remember thinking "That's awful! There's no way people will keep doing that!"
I WAS VERY WRONG :C

OMG. Baby rhinos are so cute. It's really sad to hear of poaching still occurring in the world. You'd think we'd be over it by now, but I'm sure there are far more animals being poached than rhinos. To be honest, all poaching needs to be stopped, but let's take it one step at a time. :) Great drawing. I love the pop art style you always seem to use with your drawings. It's very dynamic and really grabs attention.
Unfortunately as long as there is a market for the horns (and various parts of other poached animals) that will always go on. I can only see it becoming worse over time as the market for these products grows as those countries become better off financially as well
You are right, there is no other way of putting it other than that it is heart-breaking.

Ugh, it always sucks when people poach. I get some of the reasons some people might have to do that (a need for finances coupled with a lack of seeing animals as important as, say, you and I do), but still. >:C
Anyway, I don't know rhino anatomy, like, at all, but it looks really close to the little I do know. Art-wise, I like the little line of white that runs along the top and separates it the rhino from the background and the parts you left heavily inked near the bottom. I HOPE THOSE AREN'T THE PARTS YOU DISLIKE. D:
