I'm using one of my own original decks to go up against a… well, sub-archetype here. It took me a long time to get around to finishing my next section because of school, but I hope you'll like it. However, If you're ilke me and reading this for the "transformation", you're going to be disappointed.
ENJOY it.
Pt. 4 That's the Spirit
By Anthony Anonymous Writer.
We now rejoin Rocky and Marshal back at their hotel in Starter Deck City. Rocky had to endure the entire trip in a wet diaper. Marshal had to ignore that fact as they needed to get the expensive gifts that they bought (and the gift Rocky received) into the safety of their hotel room. The security of was excellent in Duel World, but Marshal’s gift for his mother was fragile and couldn’t be taken onto the rides in Hero City. They had no clue about them being watched for by the very security that was supposed to protect them.
The park’s Hidden Duelists were the elite of the elite of all Duel World. This is not only because of their dueling skills, but for the mysterious powers that they possess. A dark power that strangely resembled that of Shadow Duels was rumored to occur. This is because they were in fact Shadow Duels, mind you with Limitations in place for the safety of the employees and guests. All security is monitored and regulated throughout the park by these Hidden Duelists and those who took orders directly under them.
One particular Hidden Duelist was known as “Thunderbird”. Contrary to his namesake, he was a normal human being who kept a Native American themed costume. Thunderbird had been selected to oversee the mysterious disappearances that have been occurring lately. Thunderbird had already figured out that these people had been reported missing shortly after losing a duel.
Although there were a few missing people that no one really missed. Monty Jack, the rat from last night, is one example. The Cyber Dragon user was only known to be missing because he was suspected to be involved. Almost 20% of the missing Duelist lost to him. A lot of good that investigation went, until Thunderbird realized that Monty had lost a duel before he fell of the grid. The Duelist was a Six Star duelist now and he only arrived in the park a few days ago as a Three Star. On top of that he turned down upgrading to a bigger room. Perhaps he saw who took Monty.
Thunderbird decided to send a couple of his underlings to fetch the Duelist…
“Rocky, are you done in there,” Marshal knocked on the bathroom door.
“Yeah,” Rocky opened the door quickly. He had on a new pair of pants on, but that’s not to say that Rocky was dressed normally again.
“You’re not wearing another diaper are you?”
“I only had the one,” Rocky shrugged as he walked out into the main room, “I don’t know where to get more.”
“Well, hopefully, you wont need anymore,” Marshal passed by the rottweiler and into the bathroom, “Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to make certain that I wont need on later.”
“Okay,” Rocky nodded, “I’ll wait outside.”
“No,” Marshal snapped pointing at the ground, “do not leave this room.”
“Why…,” Rocky whined.
“You know exactly why,” the cat pointed, as he shut the bathroom door, “now wait right there.”
Rocky kicked imaginary dirt. It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t like he had one of his ‘memory lapses’ recently. Or at least not officially… Rocky had yet to explain why he spent that morning in the Shine Palace. Mainly because Marshal never asked him *KNOCK* *KNOCK* *KNOCK*
“Who could that be,” Rocky thought to himself as he opened it to a Rino furry and a Machoke morph, “Oh, the housekeeping. Sorry, we’ll leave in just a minute.”
“Actually, we’ve come for you,” the Machoke reached out for Rocky…
When Marshal was done with his business, he moved on to washing his hands. He could have sworn he heard the front door open, but he knew Rocky wouldn’t leave even if the room was on fire. Although if the room was somehow on fire Rocky would break down the door to save him first. Still, Marshal wasn’t worried… As Marshal dried off his hands he heard a group of loud thumps followed by a pair of larger thuds that actually shook the room.
Marshal was about to ask when Rocky spoke up from behind the door, “Marshal! It happened again!”
“Oh no,” Marshal quickly opened the door. He stopped immediately at the sight that he saw. Two rather large furs were lying atop each other on the hotel floor. They had bruises on their exposed flesh and the Rino had a black eye. The worse part was that was that Marshal knew that the two of them were hotel employees. Whereas Rocky was standing on top of one of the beds with tears in his eyes, “what happened?”
“I… I don’t know,” Rocky fought back his tears. He couldn’t tell Marshal the truth, but that was more for the pride of the two employees, “they came in and they wanted to take me away and then… wham! They both fall down.”
“Well, do you have any idea who these two are?”
Rocky shook his head, “I thought they were room service… What do we do?”
“What the,” Thunderbird crossed his arms as he monitored the cat and the dog leaving the hotel room without his men escorting them. He quickly tapped on his communicator, “Henry? Roger? Come in. What are you two doing in there?”
There was only static on the other end.
“Henry, Roger, respond,” Thunderbird asked a little louder, still receiving no answer. Although after a few more seconds, Thunderbird heard a few groans. It was still unclear of what had happened, but Thunderbird knew that something had to of happened. He knew that Henry and Roger were not the Dueling type, but for those two kids to take them both out, “Well, this is a surprise.”
Our duo on the run, were now in one of the hotel’s elevators frightened out of their minds. Marshal because he knew that Rocky had just taken down two of Duel World’s employees or at least two people dressed like employees. The employees of Duel World were supposed to be good people. Duel World was supposed to be safe. That is what Marshal knew for certain. He also knew that Rocky wouldn’t attack anyone unless they were threatening him somehow, especially during his black outs.
“Who were those guys,” Marshal grabbed hold of his friend’s shoulders.
“I don’t know,” Rocky crossed his heart, “I’ve never seen either of them before.”
“Rocky, I want you to think very very hard about this,” Marshal looked the pup straight in the eyes, “Have you done anything that people would be after you… Lately.”
“No, I’ve been keeping out of trouble,” Rocky wasn’t exactly lying, but sometimes the best lies are hidden behind truths.
“Does this have to do with that thing that you dueled Prisma for?”
Rocky shrugged, “…it might. Prisma said that it was magic.”
“Magic…,” Marshal let his arms drop as the elevator slowly reached the Lobby, “it just had to be magic.”
“I’m sorry Marshal,” Rocky’s ears drooped, “it’s my fault that this keeps happening.”
“It’s my own bad luck Rocky,” Marshal put a hand to his face, as the elevator doors opened, “let’s get out of here before we run into any more trouble.”
“You mean like me,” Thunderbird was waiting for the two of them, tapping his foot.
Rocky quickly hid behind Marshal as his friend shielded him from the bigger man.
“Take it easy you two,” Thunderbird raised his arms defensively, “I just wanted to ask some questions.”
“I take it you sent those thugs,” Marshal lowered his gaze at the human.
“I swear I just want to talk,” Thunderbird lifted his ID card, “I’m from Duel World Security.”
“We didn’t do anything,” Rocky whined, peaking from behind Marshal.
“Then why did you run,” Thunderbird raised an eyebrow.
“Two musclebound morphs break into our room and tried to take my friend away to God knows where,” Marshal shouted, “what else do you expect us to do!”
“Maybe we should talk somewhere more private,” Thunderbird looked about at all the other guests before he leaned in close, “it’s about the missing Duelists.”
“We had nothing to do with them,” Marshal snapped.
“Really,” Thunderbird smile sarcastically, “because your little friend is a Six Star Duelist who happened to be the last to Duel one of my prime suspects, of whom has also gone missing mysteriously.”
Marshal took a moment to take this information in before turning to Rocky, “You’re a Six Star Duelist!?”
“It’s really not that hard,” Rocky shrugged.
“I’m only Three Stars,” Marshal was flabbergasted.
“Look,” Thunderbird sighed, rubbing his eyes, “You’re holding up the elevator, so…”
“We’re not going anywhere with you,” Marshal pointed.
“Have it your way,” Thunderbird quickly stepped into the elevator and clicked the Close button, “Operations Override: Password, Hino-Kagu Tsuchi!”
“Voice recognition: Thunderbird. Password accepted,” the elevator’s intercom system beeped, “initiating lockdown.”
“What did you-”
“Dropping,” the intercom beeped once more before the elevator dropped down to the underground areas of the park. The boys screamed as they clutched each other. No one could hear them from the outside.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"
Naturally the boys screamed as the elevator suddenly began to drop what felt like thousands of feet down. Thunderbird wasn't the least bit phased at the sudden drop. He was used to the transport system. Lights flashed as the elevator around them all faded away and now they were free falling in these lights.
When it was all over the two were still screaming their heads off. At least, Marshal thought that he was. When Marshal was done, Rocky continued to scream until he noticed that Thunderbird and Marshal were watching him wiggle his uvula like one of those old cartoon characters. He stopped suddenly.
"What? Oh are we there," Rocky looked around as he pried his claws out of the cat's fur.
"We are," Thunderbird raised an eyebrow, confused with the pup's inconsistent personality traits.
"Where is there," Marshal asked looking around for any landmarks or structural designs that he would recognize. He did recognize them, but not as any section of Duel World. It appeared to be an indian camp of some sort. There was an open sky in above us and as far as the eye could see. He didn't quite know how we ended up here. Even the elevator disappeared and the three of them were standing on this circular platform that Marshal remember seeing from some space-themed show from thirty years ago. Very out of place equipment for where they now were.
"Welcome to my Hidden Arena: Kindling Spirits. But don't worry," Thunderbird stepped off the platform and walked towards the camp, "As I said, i only wish to ask you a few questions."
"I'm not answering any questions until I get some answers here," Marshal shouted as Rocky had a different reaction.
"Good because I wasn't talking about you," Thunderbird motioned to Rocky.
"This is so amazing," Rocky ran towards the forest of trees, "The sky, the totem poles the Trees! They all look so much like the real thing."
"That's because they are real," Thunderbird took a seat down at the unlit fire pit, "well save for the sky and the horizon. But the totem poles are from my own ancestry. I also insisted that they put in real trees and lights that simulate real sun light."
"That's so cool," Rocky shouted gleefully. Marshal was almost afraid of what he was thinking of doing to those pine trees.
"Your friend is quite the free spirit," Thunderbird smiled at Marshal patting a log next to him for the cat to sit down. He didn't take Thunderbird up on his offer.
"You have no idea," Marshal frowned, "Why did you take us here?"
"I'm from the security detail. They call me, Thunderbird," the indian crossed his arms, "I simply wish to talk. Rocky Balebone may be a potential witness to a crime that I'm investigating."
"So why did you send those thugs to fetch us?"
"Thugs? I think you misjudged them," Thunderbird laughed to himself, "those two thugs? Hardly! Despite how they look they were quite harmless. Even before you knocked them out."
"Me," the cat waved my hands, "Oh nonono. I couldn't even lift a hammer without breaking something. It was all Rocky."
"Looky Marshal," Rocky was running around chasing a butterfly, "Awe come back here Mr. Flutter Butter!"
"Seriously," Thunderbird's glare seemed to intensify, "is that the story you want to go with?"
"The truth's the truth," Marshal shrugged sitting down on the log opposite of Thunderbird, "so this witness thing…?"
"Right as I was saying," Thunderbird paused for a moment as Rocky continued to chase his butterfly, "Mr. Balebone, would you be so kind as to sit down?"
"Dawe…," Rocky pouted as he grabbed the seat next to his friend, "and I almost had it too."
As if on cue the butterfly that he was chasing landed itself on his left ear. Rocky rolled his eyes upward before puffing out his cheeks. Marshal was amazed that Thunderbird didn't laugh at the irony of the moment.
"Do you recognize this picture," Thunderbird reached out to show us the blown up photograph of a rat furry.
"Sure we do," Marshal pointed out, Rocky stayed quiet, "He's the latest Duelist to go missing, isn't he?"
"His name's Monty," Thunderbird read off a clipboard that no one realized he had, "now last night, at roughly midnight you, Rocky, were engaged in a duel with one Monty-"
"No, I wasn't," Rocky tilted his head.
"Don't bother lying, Mr. Balebone," Thunderbird waved his clipboard, "we have it on record."
"Then your record's wrong," Rocky crossed his arms, determined to stick to his story.
"Last night," Thunderbird pointed at Rocky, "you were dueling him, you won, and then he vanished-"
"Now hold on," Marshal stood up, "Surely, you don't think that Rocky had anything to do with that."
"Hehe," Rocky laughed, "you called him Shirley…"
"I didn't say that he did," Thunderbird didn't even bother to look at the cat, "I simply stated that he was the last to see my suspect before he went missing."
"But I didn't win anything last night," Rocky whined, "Marrrrshaaaalllll…"
"Be serious here," Thunderbird glared.
"Good luck with that," Marshal snorted, "We're leaving."
"You can go, but Mr Balebone has a lot of explaining to do."
"Look," Marshal paused a moment to think of how to word his next sentence, "I've known Rocky for years. He's honest. If he said he doesn't know then he doesn't know."
"I have it on record here," Thunderbird passed the clipboard over to Marshal.
The cat had to bend over to reach for the paperwork. Marshal paused to look at Rocky. He shook the pup off his arm, before walking towards Thunderbird and returning the papers, "can i talk to you in private first."
"I'd prefer to talk to-"
"It's important," Marshal glared, "Rocky doesn't need to hear this."
Thunderbird raised an eyebrow again, before sighing, slapping his knees and standing up. He pointed to one of the teepees, "this way…"
"Rocky," Marshal turned to his friend, "Stay here."
"but…"
"It will be okay," Marshal assured his friend as Thunderbird raised the cloth entrance into the hut. He allowed Marshal inside first as he followed. Marshal quickly took a seat and motioned for the Indian to sit closer.
"It's soundproof," Thunderbird let the door flap close, "You can speak freely. Now what is it?"
"First off," Marshal raised a finger, "What I'm about to tell you is confidential. You're not to speak a word of this to anyone… Especially Rocky."
"You've got thirty seconds."
Marshal sighed before he explained, "Rocky has a bit of a medical condition…"
"Which is…?"
"Five years ago, before I met Rocky… he had a bit of a breakdown."
"Meaning what?"
"I don't know, I never asked and it's none of my business," Marshal shrugged, "Rocky's my friend and I don't care about his past."
"Then this was a waste of my time," Thunderbird turned to leave.
"However," Marshal shouted for Thunderbird to keep listening, "since then Rocky has had memory lapses!"
Thunderbird stopped to turn around. He took a seat across from Marshal, "I'm listening."
"There are times when Rocky's personality changes," Marshal shook his head, "I've never seen it happen myself, but whenever Rocky or anyone that he cares about is threatened he becomes more "aggressive". He doesn't realize that he does it and he never remembers it afterwards."
"So your'e saying that he has a split personality."
"No," Marshal snapped, "That makes it sound like he's psychotic."
"Then how would you describe it?"
"…that he's afraid," Marshal paused as he thought about it some more, "He doesn't want to hurt anyone, but he doesn't want to see any of us hurt even more than that. So his brain just blocks it from his mind."
"Then you're saying that he might have," Thunderbird put his fingers up for quotations, "relapsed when he dueled Monty."
"I'm not saying that," Marshal looked down, he didn't realize how uneasy he felt talking about this with someone besides their small group, "Although… if Monty threatened him… somehow, then… I guess that it's possible…"
"If that is the case then there's only one way for us to know exactly what happened."
Rocky walked up as close to the tent as he could, but Thunderbird wasn't kidding when he said that inside was soundproof. Rocky could hear his own blood pumping better than he could hear anything that the two of them were talking about. Rocky knew what Marshal was telling Thunderbird, but he didn't know the indian well enough to predict how he would react. No one could predict what would happened only a minute after the flap flapped shut. Rocky waited quietly, but the moment that he began to worry for his friend the door flap burst open, slapping him in the face.
A giant wind chucked Marshal out the entrance like he was a rag doll. Thunderbird marched after him and stood at the head of the fire pit. Marshal struggled to his feet, but he could only get up to one knee due to all that wind. He shielded his eyes as he shouted.
"What are you doing!!!"
"What must be done," Thunderbird snapped his fingers. What best could be described as a bubble formed around the fire pit and two of them. Marshal stood up as the wind had died away when the bubble had completed itself. Rocky was left outside of the dome.
"Marshal," Rocky ran towards the bubble, but it bounced him away. He got back up and started pounding away at the shimmering surface. "What's happening?"
"Our Duel," Thunderbird raised his left arm for a black duel disk to flash and attach itself to him.
"Why would I Duel you," Marshal raised himself to his feet.
"Haven't you noticed the air tight bubble we're in? You have five minutes before this area runs out of air," Thunderbird readied his Duel Disk, the sections spreading out like a raven's wing, "The only way to prevent it is to defeat me in a Duel."
"But… You'll suffocate too," Marshal pointed out.
"I can have as much air as I need," Thunderbird snapped his fingers, a new bubble formed next to his head, "So you better hurry up."
"Marshal!"
"Of course, Rocky can also save you," Thunderbird looked at the rottie, "all he has to do is tell the truth."
"But I did," Rocky cried, "Marshal! I swear I don't know!"
"Don't worry Rocky," Marshal took out one of his many Deck Cells and loaded it on to his watch. It stated out loud, 'Mechanical Magician Deck Loaded!'
"Marshal," Rocky shouted louder, "Don't use that deck!"
"I know what I'm doing. Holodisk Accelerate!" Marshal smiled as he spun the small wheel, activating his Holodisk. The hologram grew out to be a blue 5D's Duel Disk.
"Then use a better deck than that one," Rocky 'duh'ed at Marshal.
"You should listen to your friend," Thunderbird warned, "I'm not just some random police inspector. I'm a Hidden Duelist of Duel World. If you don't take me seriously, then you will have to pay the price."
"I don't care if you're Yami Yugi himself," Marshal motioned for his first hand, "You're trying to mess with my friend's head! You mess with my friends… then consider what happened to your goons to be child's play to what I'll do to you."
"That's great and all," Rocky frowned, "but that deck sucks!"
Marshal fell over at his friend's statement. He knew that Rocky was honest, but sometimes Marshal wished that the pup would be a little more tactful…
"Let's Duel!"
"As I'm the one that challenged you, I'll go first," Thunderbird drew his card, "I'll set two cards and End."
Thunderbird's cards flashed onto the field before, both were Spell/Traps.
"No Monster?"
"It's the only handicap that you're going to get this Duel," Thunderbird crosse his arms.
"Then it's my Draw," Marshal quickly selected his cards, "I'll Set a monster facedown and one more, then end."
Marshal's holographic cards slipped themselves onto the field. The monster card in Defense mode with the other card straight out behind it.
"No attack?"
"A good magician knows his audience first," Marshal joked, "besides do you think that I'm dumb enough to Attack with two Facedowns? Even Bobby wouldn't do that."
"I would if I knew it was a bluff," Rocky shook his head.
Thunderbird lowered his head, "It wasn't a bluff. I did say that it was a handicap, did I not?"
"I don't need a handicap either," Marshal crossed his arms with a smug look on his face.
"Too bad," Thunderbird drew his next card and smiled, "because this is when I get serious! I'll activate one of my Facedowns. Spring of Rebirth!"
The fire pit disappeared and was replaced for a stone fountain. Shining bubbles rose up and out from the waters, splashing on Thunderbird's forcefield.
"This card grants me 500 Lifepoints each time a monster is returned to the hand," Thunderbird then played the card that he had Drawn, "Next I play the Field Spell: Mosulium of the Emperor!" Four large pillars came out of the ground surrounding Thunderbird's Hidden Area. The ground directly under the duelists and the fountain vanished to be replaced with a pit full of stone statues.
"This card allows each of us to Tribute these statues instead of monsters at the price of 1000 Lifepoints per Tribute, So Now I pay 2000 Lifepoints in order to Tribute Summon Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi!" Thunderbird glowed for a second as the lifepoints were drained from his body. Two of the statues shattered into fire as flame haired warrior burst onto the field. The shirtless warrior kicked outward with his judo skills. (2800 ATK).
"Now I'll equip him with the Sword of Kusanagi and the Orb of Yasaka" Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi caught each of the artifacts, but tossed the orb back into the air. It floated in the space over his right shouder as he posed with his new weapon. The sword sparked with spiritual energy.
"Each of these relics give my Monster new abilities, first the Sword of Kusanagi provides a Pierce ability, so it doesn't matter if your monster is in Defense Mode."
Thunderbird pointed towards Marshal's hidden Monster. It flipped itself Face-up to reveal itself as a white and gold mechanized rabbit with blue letters spelling out "Love IT" tattooed on it's forehead. (100 DEF) It deflected the swing of the sword for just an instant before shattering. Marshal fell back as the damage was well over 2000.
"My Facedown Monster was Mecha Bunny," Marshal recovered rather quickly as the Monster card was replaced, "Just like a Magician with his hat, I can pull another Mecha Bunny from my Deck, Facedown."
"Yes, but my Lifepoints increase by your destroyed Monster's Attack points thanks to my Orb of Yasaka," Thunderbird paused as a sparkling light glittered around him.
"Now my Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi's Ability now Activates, because he inflicted Battle Damage you'll have to discard your entire hand before your next draw."
"Then I guess that it's good that I had this Trap," Marshal motioned for his second Facedown to rise up, "Divine Wrath! This card let's me discard a card so that I can negate your Monster's Effect and destroy your Monster!"
Marshal discarded a Monster as Lightning came out of no where in the sky. The flame headed man spasmed out as his sword and orb were destroyed. Thunderbird's monster disappeared with the lightning.
"Lucky draw there," Thunderbird chuckled to himself, "Not many people bother destroying my monsters and try to attack me directly instead."
"Quit wasting time," Marshal snapped, "End your turn already."
"Patience is something that you children have forgotten over the years."
"Well, excuse me that I didn't forget that I'm running out of Oxygen here!"
"Very well," Thunderbird set one more card, "Your move."
"Draw!"
"You know," Thunderbird pointed out, "if you're more relaxed you'll use up less oxygen."
"Or I could finish this quickly. First I Flip-Summon Mecha Bunny!"
The mechanized bunny flipped up and over his card as it shifted into Attack Mode (500 ATK).
"When Mecha Bunny is Flipped Summoned I'm now able to select a card on the field like your Spring of Rebirth, then the owner of the selected card receives 500 points of damage!"
Mecha Bunny bounced its way forward and landed on top of Thunderbird's Spring of Rebirth. It flashed in a white light before it flipped high into the air with a sudden burst of speed. Mecha Bunny flipped down off the Force field bubble and smashed its way into Thunderbird's chest. It finished off by back flipping back onto Marshal's side of the field.
"Heha," Rocky grinned at the pun that he saw, "Mecha Bunny used your Spring as a spring board."
"Now I Tribute Mecha Bunny to make way for Handcuffs Dragon!"
Marshal's robotic rabbit burst into a giant dragon that really gave its name credit for how it appeared (1800 ATK).
"Next I discard another card from my hand in order Special Summon The Tricky!"
A giant question mark appeared before Marshal before it burst into a puff of smoke revealing a face-less acrobatic clown (2000 ATK). The tricky bowed before Thunderbird before he backflipped under Handcuffs Dragon.
"Now Handcuffs Dragon go in for a Direct Attack!"
"Too bad," Thunderbird snapped for his new Facedown to rise. It was a Trap called, "Begone, Knave! Now when either of our monsters do Battle Damage then they'll be returned to our hands." Handcuff Dragon swooped in and squeezed his vice like beak shut on Thunderbird. Thunderbird responded by taking hold of and throwing Handcuffs Dragon back at Marshal. The Dragon flattened back into his card and shuffled it's way into Marshal's Hand.
"And of course my Spring of Rebirth activates to restore 500 Lifepoints," Thunderbird pointed out. His fountain went into overdrive with the shining bubbles. The splashing lights recovered a few of Thunderbirds holographic injuries.
"Fine by me The Tricky Attacks!" Marshal pointed in the direction for The Tricky to go. Marshal's Monster flew it's way in Thunderbird's direction. Thunderbird prepared to defend himself, but The Tricky disappeared from his sights. The clown reappeared behind Thunderbird and smashed the back of his head with a mallet. Both Marshal and Rocky heard a bell ring before Marshal's monster vanished in a puff of smoke. Marshal's hand increased by one in a similar puff of smoke.
"That wasn't very sportsman of your monster," Thunderbird rubbed the back of his head, "but now your monster returns to your hand and I gain back 500 more Lifepoints."
"I assume that you have a reason to make yourself void of monsters?"
"Actually, I'm not as void as you think," Marshal played another Monster this one looked more like a yellow toy construction worker (0 DEF), "I'm allowed to Special Turbo Booster so long as I Normal Summoned this turn and now I End."
"Do you really think that will be enough," Thunderbird asked as he drew his card, "I'll now remove from play a Spirit Monster from my Graveyard and one in my hand in order to Special Summon Izanagi and Yamato-no-Kami!" Two new Monster appeared on the field from a shining portal. The first was a beautiful white haired spearman. The second one was more like a dark-haired spider monster man straight out of a nightmare. (2200 ATK x2) Both creatures seemed to be the same person had they gone down two dramatically different paths.
"Now I'll have Izanagi Attack Turbo Booster."
The spearman dashed forward and slashed Turbo Booster into several hundred pieces.
"Followed up by Yamato!"
The dark monster reached into the shadows and magically attacked Marshal from his own shadow. After which, Yamato disappeared into the shadows as Thunderbird's spring did it's thing.
"I of course regain 500 Lifepoints," Thunderbird stated as he caught his returning card, "since my Yamato-no-Kami has returned to the safety of my hand."
"I End and before I forget Izanagi isn't a Spirit Monster himself, so no he doesn't return to my hand."
"Spirit Monster…?"
For a moment, Rocky felt light headed. Marshal didn't notice as he drew for his hand. Thunderbird decided to turn and answer the pup's question.
"Spirit Monsters are a sub-type Monsters that possess the ability to return to their Duelist's hand at the end Phase."
"Oh…," Rocky could feel a chill in the air as his fear rose up to the surface.
No, it wasn't fear he felt. It was… No, not here… Not now… He shook his head clean of those unpleasant memories. So long as he didn't think about it he'd be fine. He had to trust Marshal right now, not the impending doom that he just knew Marshal was backing himself into. NO! Rocky shook his head once more. He couldn't think like that.
His friend, Marshal, did the same. The cat was already backed into a corner and felt more like a mouse than a cat right now. Marshal wouldn't allow himself to be used like this and hurt his friend in the process. Still, didn't have much of a strategy after diminishing his hand this far. He'd just have to hold out until he drew that card. IF he drew that card.
"I'll discard another card in order to bring back The Tricky!"
Another red question mark appeared before puffing into Marshal's clown (2000 ATK).
"Not nearly enough power," Thunderbird scoffed, as two new monsters appeared on the field. Both of them looked like dandelion seeds, "On the other hand…"
"Since the Monster that I discarded was Dandylion: I got to Special two Fluff Tokens," Marshal raised a thumbs up, "I'll now tribute one of my Fluff Tokens in order to resummon Handcuffs Dragon!"
"Now I'll have Handcuffs Dragon Attack!"
"It's not powerful enough," Thunderbird said before he realized, "Wait, you're going to…"
"That's right," Marshal pointed at Thunderbird's Trap as his own monster was destroyed, "Usually, I'd activate Handcuffs Dragon's ability, but your 'Begone, Knave!' now activates sending Izanagi back to your hand."
The white haired man vanished back into the portal as Thunderbird's spring reactivated.
"Marshal," Rocky thumped the wall, "you need to quit diminishing your Lifepoints. This guy isn't like regular Duelists!"
"Rocky, for the last time… I know what I'm doing," Marshal snapped before he announced, "With your Monster out of the way The Tricky can go in for a Direct Attack!"
The Tricky repeated his motions once more, but Thunderbird was ready for him this time. The instant The Tricky vanished from sight, Thunderbird turned to stop the Mallet. The Tricky vanished like he did before to return to Marshal's Hand.
"It's your move Birdy!"
"You should listen to your friend," Thunderbird drew his next card, unfazed by the nickname, "Losing to a Hidden Duelist means more than just a slap on the wrist. It means playing a Penalty Game of my choosing. My standard is transferring the loser's spirit into their very own totem pole, while their spirit guide has fun in their bodies."
"So those…" Marshal's eyes turned towards the totem poles that stood on the grounds. He wasn't able to finish the question. Even if he did, Thunderbird wasn't going to answer him.
"I'll Banish a Spirit Monster in my hand to Re-Special Izanagi followed up by Summoning Inaba White Rabbit." Another spirit gate appeared as a rabbit attached to a metallic egg-like machine slid onto the field (700 ATK). "I'll now have Inaba attack!" Inaba turned its head in Marshal's direction. It's red eyes flashed and shot lasers that stabbed Marshal in the gut. Marshal reacted as if the wind was knocked right out of him.
"As you can see Inaba is able to attack you directly," Thunderbird returned the rabbit to his hand, "And just like this my turn ends and I gain yet another 500 lifepoints."
"My turn," Marshal immediately played the drawn card, "Pot of Avarice! I'll send five monsters from my Graveyard back to my deck, in order to draw two cards."
"When did you add that to your deck," Rocky asked.
"You didn't think that I just waited for you to finish changing, did you," Marshal rolled his eyes, "Next, I'll Special The Tricky once again and Summon Tune Warrior."
An android-like warrior flew forward from Marshal's card. His hands were jack plugs that released a sonic frequency that could clearly be seen by everyone. (1600 ATK) The best part for Marshal was the fact that he was a Tuner Monster.
"Now Let's Go Synchro," Marshal pointed to the sky for his Magician to leap in the air followed by the other two, "Bare witness to the ritual that summons devils and pay the cost for it." "Barter with Life, Blood Mefist."
A shadow man rose up from the ground. He was legless, but carried a cane and a top hat. He clearly wasn't a Monster that you want to meet in a dark alley. (2800 ATK)
"Now that's a nasty looking spirit," Thunderbird rubbed his right arm, "It gives me chills just to look at it."
"Wait, until you see what it can do," Marshal lowered his disk, "I End."
"Yes, let's see it," Thunderbird drew his next card and grinned.
"Blood Mefist's ability activates right now," Marshal pointed out, his Mefist glowing, "During your Standby Phase, Mefist inflicts 300 points of Damage for every card you control. I count five, so that's 1500 points of damage."
"I pay 2000 Lifepoints to Summon Yamata Dragon," Thunderbird kept his grin as he looked up at his opponent. He wanted to see the look not he cat's face when the nine headed serpent dragon came out of the portal. However, Marshal couldn't notice as the air seemed to be getting much thicker now.
"Looks as if you're running out of air," Thunderbird twirled a few air bubbles, "If you're smart you'd let me defeat you now."
"What are you talking about? Both of your monsters aren't strong enough to defeat Blood Mefist and you reduced your Lifepoints to almost 500."
Rocky looked out onto the field. At first glance it would appear that Thunderbird had purposely let Marshal get the upper hand. It didn't make any sense for a Hidden Duelist to do that unless… "It's a trap!"
"Oh, you spoiled the surprise, you little runt."
"Don't call my friend a runt," Marshal huffed, "You're Dueling me here."
"Then I'll give you one chance. Forfeit now and I'll go easy on your Penalty Game."
"End your turn already."
"……Fine, I End," Thunderbirded nodded, "However, I'll use Izanagi's ability to allow my Dragon to stay on the field this time."
"Now I Draw!"
"And I'll activate the Trap that I've been saving since the beginning of this Duel," Thunderbird pointed to the first Facedown he played, "Last Turn! When my Lifepoints are 1000 or less, this card changes the rules of the game entirely. I select one monster on my side of the field then destroy everything else on the field and both of our hands. Of course, I choose my Yamata Dragon."
Blood Mefist, Izanagi and all of Thunderbird's Traps shattered in an instant. Four of Yamata Dragon's roared in delight as the two of the other roared. The ninth one didn't really do anything except move in its standard movement. Thunderbird then signaled for the cat to make his move.
"Next you choose a monster that is still in your deck and Special Summon it to the field, Your Monster then gets to attack me," Thunderbird explained, "Whoever's Monster is left on the field at the End Phase will win the Duel. So what will it be?"
Marshal looked at his Holodisk. He knew that this deck contained powerful cards, but none of them were more powerful than Yamata Dragon on their own. Still, he had to find a way.
"I said that I'd never give up and I meant it," Marshal swung his Holodisk to spill out his holographic deck. The area were his hand used to be, filled itself with a wall covered by his remaining holographic cards.
"So what monster will you choose?"
Marshal looked over the cards. He had a lot of high level monsters, but none of them had the attack strength that would defeat Thunderbird's. Monsters like his Tradegodia only had high Attack when he had a hand. The cat's head slumped down as he had to think about his own strategy. Rocky ran over to help his friend. He had to, Marshal was running out of air. He thought quickly looking over every single card Marshal had. Thunderbird watched the rottweiler's eyes quickly scan the wall. The pup's eyes suddenly lit up and Rocky smiled. Thunderbird thought it was odd, but didn't have time to truly think about it as the pup shouted-
"Marshal use your Rocket. Your Rocket!"
Marshal's eyes snapped open, before they looked upon the wall again. At first, he saw his Rocket Arrow Express. With 5000 ATK, the train had plenty of power, but it couldn't be Special Summoned. He could hear Rocky continue to shout from outside the bubble.
"Remember what rule one and use your Rocket, Marshal! The red one!"
"Red one?…," Marshal looked over his monsters before he saw what his friend was talking about, "Okay! I pick… Turbo Rocket!"
Marshal tapped on the floating card and all the others vanished. Another toy like monster flew out onto the field. This one was red in color and looked like a twin to Marshal's earlier Turbo Buster, except his arms were literally jet engines and he stood on a single little black wheel. (0 ATK)
"Attack," the boys shouted, punching forward together. The little red monster's rockets flared as he began to speed forward.
"You two really are crazy," Thunderbird scoffed.
"Marshal's Turbo Rocket's ability activates," Rocky announced for Marshal, "First of all, when he attacks he's not destroyed by battle."
Turbo Rocket smashed his way into Yamata Dragon. All nine of the serpentine heads snapped outward and spat up little bits of its spit and venom. The two were not destroyed, but even Thunderbird could feel that something was wrong here.
"Second your Last Turn prevents any Battle Damage from being calculated."
"So then it's going to be a draw," Thunderbird was smug despite the fact that the tension between the monsters was growing stronger.
"Wrong," Marshal shouted before Rocky continued.
"It's not the End Phase, so the Duel's not over yet," Rocky pumped a fist in the air, "See after Damage Calculation, Turbo Rocket inflicts Damage equal to half of your Monster's Attack!" As if on cue, Turbo Rocket's energy flared as the tension between the two Monsters finally gave way. Yamata Dragon crashed on top of Thunderbird. He didn't bother to put up any defenses as doing so would be entirely pointless. Especially for a simple holographic Duel. Thunderbird had lost and he accepted it.
"So Marshal Wins," Rocky announced.
"Now let him go."
"Perhaps I should…," Thunderbird in his own way tried one last time to draw the old Rocky out, "Or I could see how much longer he can stand."
"I said, Let my friend go," Rocky glared at Thunderbird and he would have let Marshal go sooner, but… Thunderbird didn't expect to see what he had. Rocky's smile was long forgotten. The closest thing that Rocky's face resembled to Thunderbird was when you stepped on a lion's tail. Rocky's tail even swished predatorily as he flexed his claws. The Rottweiler actually flexed his claws. Thunderbird realized that the dog had claws, but he couldn't remember if they were quite that long before. Rocky growled deeper, "now…"
"A deal's a deal," Thunderbird snapped his fingers and the bubble popped instantly. Rocky's composure returned to normal. Rocky quickly bounced to his friend and shook the life into him.
"Marshal, are you okay?"
"I'll be… fine," Marshal breathed heavily, "Just give me… a sec…"
Thunderbird wasn't sure what he had just seen, but what he had seen meant the following: The pup was able to alter his body and do it quickly. If that was true then there was no doubt in his mind that this pup had also taken out his men all on his own. If the pup was that much stronger than he looked, then if Thunderbird wanted answers, threatening Rocky's friend was not the way to get them. Rocky's other side wasn't one that was meant to be in this world and that slap-happy rottweiler was the only one keeping that thing out. If all that was true, then there's no way that the pup wouldn't know about it.
"I concede defeat today," Thunderbird stated, "As such, Marshal you will receive an upgrade to your Duelist Level and I will personally take you to a Duel World clinic. After which, I will not bother you again. I promise."
The pup looked up at the man. Thunderbird's words said one thing (and there was no doubt that he was telling the truth), but his eyes said that it wasn't over quite yet. Just like with the Duel, this wasn't quite over yet. Only this time, Thunderbird was going to be the Turbo Rocket that would turn this around.
The next Chapter "The Real Rocky Balebone" is split into two sections. You must read both, but you can read either one first so take your pick..
