It sounds pretty unfair, I'm sure there's something you can do regarding the financial situation. At least in the USA they let you work out plans and work with you regarding your financial situation. I would have assumed things would be better in the UK because everyone shittalks America over our "system".

I'm trying to sort something out with them now. Pay off as much as I can right now, then try and get back onto a payment scheme for the remainder. I just think it's stupid I have to pay them a full year in advance.

Just talked someone who is British, he said you won't be put in prison over it.

If you live in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland you can't be put in prison over it, but if you live in England you definitely can be.

As per the government's page on council tax:
"You can be sent to prison for up to 3 months if the court decides you don’t have a good reason to not pay your Council Tax and you refuse to do so."

And what's more is - due to legal errors - up to 10% of people sent to prison over council tax non-payment have been placed there erroneously.

Sounds like England is a shithole. Surely being too poor to pay counts as a good reason not to pay though.
