July Writing Update: Task Failed Successfully
3 years ago
Good morning everyone. For those of you who have noticed a pattern in how these journals have gone, you are indeed once again correct! It's time for another month of mixed failures and victories. Thankfully this month I am not at all sad or upset by the failures, as I went into July fully expecting them. I'm moving this month after all, and one does not simply spend a quick day dealing with something like this. Even though I'm still living in the same city and only swapping apartments, there's a SHITLOAD of work that goes into this process and I fully expected it to interfere heavily in this month's writing. Hell, it will undoubtedly interfere a ton with next month too. I'm not going to let this upset me, especially in light of the fact that I actually did really really well this month despite the move and SGDQ. Let's get into it!
JULY WRITING SUMMARY
This may sound crazy, but I actually somehow managed to hit the minimum goal I set for myself this month, including the catch-up words to cover last month!
❌ -Rise of the Silver Flight Chunk 3: 0 words out of an expected 10,000
❌ -Mutagen Origins Chunk 2: 0 words out of an expected 10,000
✔️ -Crossing of the Paths Chunk 12: 44,226 words - 18,803 words pre-existing = 25,423 words this month
TOTAL: 25,423 words written in July!
So yeah, that's a fuckin impressive wordcount total given the fact that I have spent half the month dealing with moving! All those 25k words were done in the first two weeks of the month too. Granted, all 25k were all pre-written in my paper notebooks at work over the course of several months so I wasn't exactly generating brand new content, just transcribing it into the computer. But I'm still gonna give myself credit since I added tons of content and edited a lot as I worked on the transcription. And besides, transcription IS a painfully tedious process. Plus, meeting and then exceeding my minimum goal for July means I completely reversed the yearly word deficit from last month and turned it back into a surplus again! I'm now sitting on a comfy 1,705 word surplus for the year! That's a pretty impressive reversal considering how much of a train wreck last month was!
Granted, it does kinda suck that COTP dominated my entire focus and I didn't write a single word on my NSFW stuff. I haven't exactly been able to control my focus very well this month due to the move stress, even during that comparatively free first two weeks. Transcribing COTP out of my notebooks basically was an escape from the anxiety and anticipation caused by the move. Plus, I'm getting very very close to the end of the "Desert Wind" arc of COTP now, and the proximity to the big climactic final battle is just pushing my obsession even further. I have planned out and choreographed that battle scene down to the minute detail in my notes and I'm mega excited to fire all the various Chekhov's Guns I've been carefully putting into place over the course of the 200K+ words of the story leading up to the battle, and this is just making me all the more hyperfocused. I know it really sucks for the fans of my Arina story and I'm really sorry for that. I'm hoping that once I finish Chunk 13 of COTP and the final battle of Desert Wind is over, the hyperfocus urge will die down.
AUGUST WRITING GOALS
Just like July, I'm going to set my goals high even if I know there's little to no chance of meeting all of them. I am going to be a bit more reasonable though and take Mutagen Origins back off the docket for now though, especially since I know I have the move to finish and a SHITLOAD of editing to do.
-Editing of Serpent's Luster (Gift story for Selth): 15,749 words to edit, including some rewrite requests from Selth for the science segments.
-Editing of COTP Chunk 12: 44,226 words to edit
-Rise of the Silver Flight Chunk 3: Expected 10,000 words
-Crossing of the Paths Chunk 13: Expected 50,000 words
Total Expected Word Count for August: 16,667-60,000 words!
Yeah, I know that 60,000 word figure on the max end is bullshit, but it's just a math artifact from the fact that the final chunk of Desert Wind is projected to be so huge. I don't actually plan to do even half of it this month, but I wanted to at least show how big a task that chunk is going to be. I will however shoot for the usual monthly minimum 16k quota, and ideally have the next ROTS chunk be most of that. But the move comes first, and I'm getting very close to that! The movers bring their truck out on August third, and I'm still packing as of the posting of this journal on July 31st, so I'm not gonna keep rambling any longer. I gotta get back to work on my packing! Wish me luck everyone! Hopefully next time I talk to y'all by this time next month I'll be decently settled in at my new place! Peace!
