When Charley hit us, we were without power for 3+ weeks. I think SWF upgraded their infrastructure after that so hopefully, it won't last as long this time around.
I'm further south then where it hit and we had some really bad weather the day before it made landfall. We had flooding and some twisters but all in all we faired well down here.
Better to hype it and have people be more careful than they need to be. It's nothing to fuck with. The situation is at least somewhat unpredictable and can change quickly.
This is a huge storm, and is doing historic damage. People who didn't heed the warnings will be found to have died.
I have a friend in FL who is telling me this is way worse than Charley. He's saying there are bridges out, boats in people's roofs, and bodies in the river.
This is one of the five worst storms to ever hit the US, from what I've heard, and it's not done yet. It's out at sea gathering strength right now before it hits again farther North. There's a causeway to a couple of the barrier islands that's toast. Anyone who didn't heed the warning to get out of there is in deep doodoo.
One more reason I wouldn't want to live there. My good friend who owns a house in West Palm was visiting his girlfriend in Iowa. His daughter is going to fly down to check out the condition of her inheritance.
Yeah so... I recently got a home in Fort Myers, spent a lot on remodeling, and then this happens. Silver lining is that I was traveling up north when it hit, but I haven't been able to get a flight back down to see if anything's left standing. I've also heard insurance carriers in South FL love to underpay/deny hurricane claims and drag you through court before finally settling. So I guess October is going be fun this year.
Most recent here was Harvey. Prior to that Ike :| So I know what you're dealing with.
Folks who don't live near the oceans don't understand the anxiety that comes with the late Summer months. As this silly sh*t spins off West Africa, you start watching its track to see if it's going to go above or below Cuba. You also start looking at High / Low pressure systems and / or the timing of cold fronts.
Those of you that endured this one have all my sympathies.
I'm in Maryland but I know tazel has family down in Lee County. Shi hasn't been able to reach them. We're reaching out to the Cajun Navy to check on them. I'm helping hir out as shi's going through a terrible time w/o news if they made it.
