Humanitarian Crisis in Kherson!! Very Important!
Hello all, it's been quite a while since I've made a journal like this. But I want to try and help spread the word around of this recent crisis that has already caused immense damage and displacement, and will continue to endanger even more lives as people and animals are in desperate need of help. As I'm sure most have heard already, yesterday there was a major breach in the dam of the Nova Kakhova hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region of Ukraine, causing massive flooding and damage on a large environmental scale as villages and cities are being swamped by the rampant rushing waters from the Dnipro River reservoir. As far as news that I can find goes, the casualties so far have included at least 300 animals at a zoo within the region that couldn't be evacuated and drowned as they had no means to run or escape. Many have already fled the affected areas when the flooding started, and there are still thousands more people and animals alike that are in need of aid for evacuation. This is a crisis of severe ecological and humanitarian proportions that will certainly have drastic, lasting negative impacts on the ecosystems of the surrounding lands and on the water supplies of many Ukrainian regions as well as neighboring countries even after the worst of the flooding has abated.
In addition, 150 metric tons of oil from the dam has already leaked into the river, which will have negative impacts on both the land around it and the water as well. The Dnipro River is also connected to the Black Sea, some of that oil spillage could certainly end up in the sea and impact marine ecosystems there. There is also risk of mines and other explosive projectiles that were placed in the area being dislodged and moved to other places that were previously said to be safe. The present and future impacts of an environmental catastrophe of this scale and severity cannot and should not be ignored. Because of the nature of the dam's construction, even a partial breach could mean that the dam itself is already effectively lost in a complete collapse as the water rushing through would cause further damage to its structure. Restoration and repairs of the dam very likely will not be possible.
There are already many volunteers and organizations currently raising money to help people and animals that need to be evacuated from flooded areas in the Kherson region, and if you're able to spare even just a dollar to donate it would still make a great difference in being able to save lives and provide much needed supplies to evacuees in need of aid! Many Ukrainian artists have already written journal posts about the situation and provided links to charities and volunteer organizations that are actively trying to help people and animals evacuate from flooded areas.
DZMaylon and
Pita-potato have made journal posts with links to organizations who are providing volunteer help for rescue and evacuation, as well as supplies for those who have already evacuated but are in need of necessities to live. If you're willing and able, please do consider checking them out and sending in some donations if you can! Any amount of money, no matter how great or small, or even just spreading the word by sharing their posts around would be super helpful and greatly appreciated! You can find them here:
