June 2023 Writing Update: So, CPAP Machines have filters
2 years ago
Yeah, this month's update kinda is a sheepish one, albeit not for the same reasons as the last few. I've been sheepish before because I failed to meet my month goals, but somehow this month I managed to exceed and handily meet the monthly goal! No, this time I'm sheepish because I finally figured out why I was struggling for the last six months to meet my goals. Here's a hint, it's not Zelda or my new PC. I actually have spent more time TRYING to write than playing video games over the last few months, which is why I've felt so puzzled about my lack of success. Usually when I'm burned out on writing I don't even try, I fully bury myself in a game like Rimworld or Subnautica or Zelda.
Well, after a few really crippling and severe bouts of insomnia a week or so ago, I finally got to the point where I realized I was starting to wake up constantly while trying to sleep again, almost like my apnea was coming back. But it didn't seem to make sense, I could still feel it providing pressure while the mask was on! Ultimately, at almost 1AM during one of these insomnia attacks, I got sick of waking up constantly and got up to fiddle with the CPAP machine. I then remembered the fact that it had a disposable air filter and opened the slot for it and saw that fucker was GUNKED THE FUCK UP. Starting to feel hopeful, I swapped it for a fresh one that I had on hand. I then proceeded to IMMEDIATELY conk the fuck out and sleep like a baby.
The next few nights I managed to sleep like a brick of concrete, and after a few days I felt so fucking refreshed and alive again that my muse came roaring back and the words just gushed out of me.
Well, I uh do feel really fucking silly for simply forgetting that the air filter even existed. Turns out you're supposed to change it once a month, and well, I hadn't changed it since December. I'm a fucking dumbass. I probably was already feeling the negative effects of it by mid January, and things have only gotten worse since then. Given how much of a revolution getting the CPAP was for me in the first place then it makes sense that it losing its effectiveness would absolutely fuck over my writing again. I could have been on track and meeting all my goals all year so far if I hadn't pulled this dumbass move, and now I'm stuck with a huge deficit to catch up on because of it.
Oh well. The good news is that even with only a week or so of writing back at full strength I've actually put out a fuckton of work and exceeded my quota for June by a solid margin, so let's get moving!
JUNE WRITING SUMMARY
This month my urge to work on COTP was again overpowering, but on the plus side I actually also had a really strong urge to work on Arina is All too, so I did both! It was so fucking strong that I ended up disregarding my editing work. I finished AiA Chunk 9 and then ended up forging on ahead into Chunk 10 too, not bothering to edit Chunk 9. And despite all this, I also got a solid bit of work on Rebirth of Lightest too! Let's break it down:
❌ -Editing of Crossing of the Paths - Book 2: Darkness & Light - Chunk 1: Still 27,953 words left to edit
✔️ -Crossing of the Paths - Book 2: Darkness & Light - Chunk 2: 6,355 words this month
✔️ -Arina is All - Chunk 9: 21,604 words - 8,035 words pre-existing = 13,569 new words this month
✔️ -Arina is All - Chunk 10: 1,933 words this month
❌ -The Rebirth of Lightest Chunk 1: 11,305 words - 5,966 words pre-existing = 5,339 new words this month
❌ -Mutagen Origins Chunk 2: 0 new words this month
TOTAL: 27,196 words in June!
I ended up having to just add COTP:D&L Chunk 2 and AiA Chunk 10 to the docket here to count them even though they didn't start out there. I also gave them check marks here since they are above and beyond my monthly goals, even if the new chunks aren't technically complete. But damn, 27K is very good! A solid 8,446 words above and beyond! Taking that out of our current deficit now means our year-on deficit has shrunk from 30,392 words to 21,946 words. That's still a hefty chungus of word debt, but it's no longer creeping up toward two whole months' worth. It's getting back down much closer to being only 1 month's worth again.
I also did end up neglecting poor Mutagen Origins again this month, and I do feel slightly bad about that since it still occasionally keeps getting kudos and faves on my AO3 page. But tbh after so many months of struggling I'm going to allow myself some grace here. Especially since with my CPAP working properly again I'm much more optimistic about future output! In fact, let's move right to those goals!
JULY WRITING GOALS
I get the feeling that this month is going to be big for Arina is All! I decided that I was going to keep adding more and more content from an old dead D&D game I once ran a few years ago. I've already been doing that of course, the story with Visseryan at the center is content from that game, but now I've decided to go ham and add A TON more stuff from that game, especially including comic relief characters and fun magic items. AiA has been fairly serious for most of its run so far and I finally got to the point where I really just wanted to write something silly, and my brain is excited for that! I'm probably also gonna pound out tons of COTP again too, as now that I've finished the rather dark and sad opening to Book 2, I'm getting to a portion involving Majora's Mask that is HELLA compelling and my brain loves writing it. So really the only struggle this month is probably gonna be finishing Rebirth of Lightest or even making myself work on Mutagen, heh. Let's see that breakdown!
-Editing of Crossing of the Paths - Book 2: Darkness & Light - Chunk 1: 27,953 words to edit
-Editing of Arina is All Chunk 9: 21,604 words to edit
Total Expected Editing Word Count for July: 49,557 words
-Crossing of the Paths - Book 2: Darkness & Light - Chunk 2: Currently 6,355 words out of an expected 15,000 words = 8,645 expected words this month
-Arina is All Chunk 10: Currently 1,933 words out of an expected 15,000 words = 13,067 expected words this month
-The Rebirth of Lightest Chunk 1: Currently 11,305 words out of an expected 17,500 words = 6,195 expected words this month
-Mutagen Origins Chunk 2: Currently 2,048 words out of an expected 15,000 words = 12,952 expected words this month
Total Expected Word Count for May: 18,750-40,859 words!
Phew, now that's quite a docket! This is perhaps my most ambitious set of monthly goals so far for the year. Disregarding the editing, if I finished this whole docket I'd be more than doubling my minimum quota AND completely clearing my entire deficit with words to spare. Hell, I'd be AHEAD of my yearly goal if I pulled this off. Do I think I'll finish it all though? Ehhh, probably not. But I wanna try to harness and capitalize on my rebounding increase of momentum and motivation, and heaven knows y'all have been missing the Arina story!
Besides, I'm almost finished uploading the finished chunks of COTP here to FA, today I'll be putting up 13 of 14 total finished chunks. So I kinda wanna get more of that done so I can have one or two more ready to go by the time I catch up! The editing is indeed daunting, but hell, I managed to power through 80K words of it last year in December, so 50K ought to be easy by comparison! Wish me luck guys!
