So... fuck.

Between 4-5am ish on 08/31, my writing app bugged out or *Something* happened, and when I woke about 1/3rd of Nick Gets Fucked Part 3A was gone. Just the last third of the document sheared clean off. About 6 or 7 thousand words. If you've read my journals or anything recently you know I've been working on this A WHILE. I'd estimate that this is about 2-3 months of work - nay 2-3 months of my *best* work, like, ever.

"That's okay. I have a backup." I thought to myself, like an idiot.
A little while back, when I updated to Android 13, Google prompted me to set up Google One, their in-built, premier back up service. I was in need of a new short term backup system so I signed up and didn't think much of it.

Hoo boy. What a service it is. First off, there's no way to actually access your backup or see what specific shit is on it - the only way to get at it is during Android first-time setup (like when you get a new phone). Second, I figured out **why** they hide that shit, it's because it doesn't actually save half the shit it advertises as doing.
Documents? 0
Downloaded data/images? 0
App data? Maybe like 40% of it

So safe to say after I'd done a factory reset to get at setup ((another thanks google moment, my account had 2fa on it so when I reset the authentifying phone, rather than like just offer to text my SIM or something they make me wait twenty four fucking hours while they disable the 2fa)), it didn't bother bringing over any of my writings.

I had a pretty good guess at what shit it might ignore, and I think I got most of it right so should have a fun time redownloading all of that :))

(and before anyone starts, I KNOW i should have had a better backup - i literally remember thinking about it like 3 hours before the incident but thats what happens when you're as much of a procrastinator as me)


Yeah... So I'm back online. NGF will be a while further off, assuming the rewrite doesn't demoralise me to the point of abandoning that branch :/
Recommendations for less shit backup services and less buggy writing apps welcome.


The PSA is simply don't use Google One, don't trust it to save ANYTHING that you can't already access through other Google services.
